The North Shore Athletic Department offers the convenience of online athletic registration through Arbiter Sports (www.arbitersports.com). Paper registration will not be accepted.
ArbiterSports is a secure registration platform that provides you with an easy, user-friendly way to register for athletics, and helps us to be more administratively efficient and environmentally responsible. When you register through ArbiterSports, the system keeps track of your information in your ArbiterSports profile. You enter your information only once for each family member for multiple uses and multiple programs.
Prior to registration, you will need to have a current sport physical examination. The sport physical is valid for one (1) calendar year from the date of the exam. The form must be uploaded to your ArbiterSports registration.
A parent/guardian may register their student-athlete(s) by clicking the ArbiterSports link on the North Shore Athletics/Health Office websites.
Register early to ensure clearance in time for the first day of sports. Clearances may take 48 school day hours. The registration portal will open thirty days (30) prior to the start of chosen sport. (SEE BELOW)
Definitions
*An athletes approval status is located on your ArbiterSports Registration Summary page under MEMO FROM NORTH SCHOOLS, APPROVAL STATUS.
Approved - the student-athlete is cleared for their sport.
Not Approved – the student-athlete is missing something, and an email has been sent to the account owner’s email
“---” review is pending and will be reviewed in a timely manner for Approval
Completed – the registration is completed. This has nothing to do with the student-athlete's APPROVAL status
Current Physical – a physical is current when it is within a year of the start of a sport season. (Example: if a physical was done anytime in August 2024, it is current through August 31, 2025. If the sport season starts in August, 2025 the physical is current for that sport season. If the sport season were to start September 1, 2025, or later, that physical is NOT considered current.) A CURRENT PHYSICAL MUST BE COMPLETE WITH HEIGHT, WEIGHT, BLOOD PRESSURE AND PULSE. FAMILY CARDIAC HISTORY REVIEW AND STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION/SPORTS MUST BE CHECKED OFF ON PAGE 2 OF THE PHYSICAL FORM.
The ArbiterSports portal opens 30 days prior to the start of the sport. You will be notified by email and social media from the Athletics Office, and your student-athlete is reminded regularly in Physical Education classes.
Registrations are reviewed daily.
Do not call the Health Office or Athletic Office to see if your student-athlete is APPROVED. Go to ArbiterSports and your 'SUMMARY' page where you will be able to see if your student-athlete has been APPROVED, NOT APPROVED or review is PENDING. If you cannot find the SUMMARY page call ArbiterSports Tech Support at 1-800-311-4060 and they can help you.
Register early to ensure that your student-athlete will be “APPROVED” for the start of their sport season. Please note it can take up to 48 school day hours for an student-athlete to be cleared. Approvals are not done after workday hours, on holidays or weekends.
DO NOT REGISTER your student-athlete for more than one sport per season. If they wish to change sports, a parent/guardian must contact (call or email) the appropriate Health Office to change the student-athletes sport selection on their registration. (MS/HS Health Office-emails/phone numbers listed below)
ALL communication is done through the email that is registered as the owner’s email on ArbiterSports. Once your registration is COMPLETED, we cannot stress enough the importance that you look at this email daily to see if anything is needed for your student-athlete to be APPROVED. Checking daily will avoid delays in your student-athlete's “APPROVAL”. It is the Health Office’s responsibility to email you to inform you what is required, and it is your responsibility and the student-athlete's responsibility to check the email daily and quickly provide what is needed.
A current physical only needs to be uploaded once per school year if it remains current for each sport season the student-athlete is registering.
Answer ALL questions under the Concerns & Comments section and update them each time you register for a sport. Failure to answer and update ALL questions accurately will delay the student-athlete “APPROVAL”.
Delete ALL expired physicals and old uploads from ArbiterSports when uploading a new physical or form. Expired physicals DELAY SPORTS APPROVAL.
The Health Office and Athletic Office do not have access to your ArbiterSports account. If you are having any technical issues i.e., uploading, deleting, or changing anything on your account call ArbiterSports Tech Support at 1-800-311-4060 and be specific when explaining the issue. DO NOT CREATE DUPLICATE REGISTRATIONS AS THIS WILL DELAY SPORTS APPROVAL.
Medication Orders
When registering for Fall sports, if your student-athlete requires any medication, such as an Epi pen, inhaler or Benadryl etc., you will need to upload a new medication order for the new school year. All medication forms must be signed and stamped by the health care provider and signed by a parent/guardian. Incomplete forms will delay an student-athlete's “Approval”. We strongly encourage that student-athletes carry their own emergency medication, if the health care provider, the parent/guardian and athlete feel it is appropriate for them. ALL student-athletes that require Benadryl and/or an inhaler will need the Provider Attestation/Permission and Parent Permission for Independent Carry and Use Form completed by their health care provider. An Inhaler is self-administered, and Benadryl MAY NOT be administered by the coach. Benadryl may only be administered by a health care provider, a nurse, the parent/guardian or self-administered by the student-athlete. Nurses are not present at practices or games. For an student-athlete to self-administer any medication, they must recognize the medication, know the dose and when and why they are taking the medication.
Medication Forms
Provider Attestation/Permission and Parent Permission for Independent Carry and Use Form
If a student-athlete is going to carry their own medication, this form must be completed and signed by the Health Care Provider AND signed by a parent/guardian. The student-athlete MUST have their medication with them at all practices and contests. It is the parent/guardian and students responsibility to ensure the medication has not expired.
Provider Attestation/Permission & Parent Permission for Independent Carry and Use Form
Provider and Parent/Guardian Permission to Administer Medication at School/School Sponsored Events Form is used when a trained coach will be administering an Epi-pen because the student-athlete is unable to administer the Epi-pen themselves. Two (2) MUST be provided to the Health Office. One (1) for the Health Office and one (1) for the Coach's Medical Kit.
Independent Medication Carry & Use Form
Any questions regarding medication orders and forms please contact the Health Office at your child’s school.

The Board of Education of the North Shore School District recognizes that concussions and head injuries are commonly reported injuries in children and adolescents who participate in sports and recreational activity and can have serious consequences if not managed carefully. Therefore, the District adopts the following policy to support the proper evaluation and management of head injuries.
Concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury. Concussion occurs when normal brain functioning is disrupted by a blow or jolt to the head. Recovery from concussion will vary. Avoiding re-injury and over-exertion until fully recovered are the cornerstones of proper concussion management.
While district staff will exercise reasonable care to protect students, head injuries may still occur. Physical education teachers, coaches, nurses and other appropriate staff receive training to recognize the signs, symptoms and behaviors consistent with a concussion. Any student exhibiting those signs, symptoms or behaviors while participating in a school sponsored class, extracurricular activity, or interscholastic athletic activity shall be removed from the game or activity and be evaluated as soon as possible by an appropriate health care professional. The School Nurse or Athletic Trainer will notify the student’s parents or guardians and recommend appropriate monitoring to parents or guardians.
If a student sustains a concussion at a time other than when engaged in school-sponsored activity, the district expects the parent/legal guardian to report the condition to the Coach, Teacher, Nurse or Athletic Trainer, so that the district can support the appropriate management of the condition.
The student shall not return to school or activity until authorized to do so by an appropriate health professional. The school’s chief medical officer will make the final decision on return to activity including physical education class and after-school sports. Any student who continues to have signs or symptoms upon return to activity must be removed from play and reevaluated by their health care provider.
The Superintendent, in consultation with appropriate district staff, including the chief school medical officer, will develop regulations and protocols to guide the return to activity.
Education
Concussion education is provided for all administrators, teachers, coaches, school nurses, athletic trainers and guidance counselors. Education of parents will be accomplished through preseason meetings for sports and/or information sheets provided to parents. Education will include, but not be limited to the definition of concussion, signs and symptoms of concussion, how concussions may occur, why concussions are not detected with CT Scans or MRI’s, management of the injury and the protocol for return to school and return to activity or interscholastic athletics. The protocols will cover all students returning to school after suffering a concussion regardless if the accident occurred outside of school or while participating in a school activity.
Concussion Management Team
The District has assembled a concussion management team (CMT). The CMT will consist of the NS Medical Director, Athletic Director, School Nurse and Athletic Trainer. The District’s CMT will coordinate training for all administrators, teachers, coaches and parents. Training is mandatory for all coaches, assistant coaches and volunteer coaches that work with these student athletes regularly. In addition, information related to concussions will also be included at parent meetings or in information provided to parents at the beginning of sports seasons. Parents need to be aware of the school district’s policy and how these injuries will ultimately be managed by school officials.
Training includes: signs and symptoms of concussions, post-concussion and second impact syndromes, return to play and school protocols, and available area resources for concussion management and treatment. Particular emphasis should be placed on the fact that NO athlete will be allowed to return to play the day of injury and also that ALL athletes should obtain appropriate medical clearance prior to returning to play or school.
The CMT will act as a liaison for any student returning to school and/or play following a concussion. The CMT will review and/or design an appropriate plan for the student while the student is recovering.
Concussion Management Protocol
Return to Academic:
After an initial period of complete rest lasting approximately 24-48 hours, a healthcare provider may clear a student to begin a gradual return to academic (aka cognitive) activities. Even with classroom accommodations, a student with a concussion will need to gradually return to all academic activities. Students with concussions may become fatigued easily and may need time to rest in school.
Graduated return to school strategy:
Stage 1:
Aim- Daily activities at home that do not give the child symptoms.
Activity- Typical activities of the child during the day as long as they do not increase symptoms (e.g., reading, texting, screen time). Start with 5-15 minutes at a time and gradually build up.
Goal of each step- Gradual return to typical activities.
Stage 2:
Aim- School activities
Activity- Homework, reading, or other cognitive activities outside of the classroom.
Goal of each step- Increase tolerance to cognitive work
Stage 3:
Aim- Return to school part-time
Activity- Gradual introduction of school work. May need to start with a partial school day or with increased breaks during the day.
Goal of each step- Increase academic activities.
Stage 4
Aim- Return to school full-time.
Activity- Gradually progress school activities until a full day can be tolerated.
Goal of each step- Return to full academic and catch up on missed work.
A gradual return to physical activity typically is done by progressing a student through levels of activity that increase in duration and/or intensity. After a brief period of initial rest (24-48 hours), symptom-limited activity can be begun while staying below a cognitive and physical exacerbation threshold (stage 1). Generally, each step should take 24 hours, so that athletes would take a minimum of 1 week to proceed through the full rehabilitation protocol once they are asymptomatic at rest. However, the time frame for RTS may vary with player age, history, level of sport, etc., and management must be individualized.
Graduated return to sport strategy:
Stage 1
Aim- Symptom-limited activity
Activity- Daily activities that do not provoke symptoms.
Goal of each step- Gradual reintroduction of work/school activities.
Stage 2
Aim- Light aerobic exercise
Activity- Walking of stationary cycling at slow to medium pace. No resistance training.
Goal of each step- Increase heart rate.
Stage 3
Aim- Sport-specific exercise
Activity- Running or skating drills. No head impact activities.
Goal of each step- Add movement.
Stage 4
Aim- Non-contact training drills
Activity- Harder training drills, e.g., passing, drills. May start progressive resistance training.
Goal of each step- Exercise, coordination and increased thinking.
Stage 5
Aim- Full contact practice
Activity- Following medical clearance, participate in normal training activities.
Goal of each step- Restore confidence and assess functional skills by coaching staff.
Stage 6
Activity- Return to sport.
Goal of each step- Normal game play.
Return to play:
Return to play following a concussion involves a stepwise progression once the individual is symptom free. There are many risks to premature return to play including: a greater risk for a second concussion because of a lower concussion threshold, second impact syndrome (abnormal brain blood flow that can result in death), exacerbation of any current symptoms, and possibly increased risk for additional injury due to alteration in balance. These NYSPHAA current returns to play recommendations are based on the most recent international expert opinion. *No student athlete should return to play while symptomatic. Students are prohibited from returning to play the day the concussion is sustained. If there is any doubt as to whether a student has sustained a concussion, it should be treated as a concussion. Once the student athlete is symptom free at rest for 24 hours and has a signed release by the treating clinician, she/he may begin the return to play progression below (provided there are no other mitigating circumstances).
Day 1: Light aerobic activity
Day 2: Sport-specific activity
Day 3: Non-contact training drills
Day 4: Full contact practice
Day 5: Return to play
Each step should take 24 hours so that an athlete would take approximately one week to proceed through the full rehabilitation protocol once they are asymptomatic at rest and with provocative exercise. If any post-concussion symptoms occur while in the stepwise program, then the student should drop back to the previous asymptomatic level and try to progress again after a further 24-hour period of rest has passed.
[*These NYSPHAA current returns to play recommendations are based on the most recent international expert opinion.]
