Ms. Thiel has been the middle school choir student teacher from March to May. Sadly she is leaving, but the Journalism class decided to interview her before she left.
A burning question students want their teachers to answer is: Do you enjoy teaching us at north polk middle school? Well, Ms. Thiel answers saying, “I loved working with you guys. You guys were well behaved and knew how to have fun.”
Her favorite part of hanging out at NPMS was meeting all of the kids and getting to know them as less of students, but more as friends. She also loved learning from Mr. Howell to become a better teacher.
One thing she found interesting about working at NPMS was that there are so many siblings. She says, “There are a lot of older siblings in high school, so it was nice to know who someones siblings are.”
Like it says earlier in this article, she is leaving NPMS. And from here she is planning on student teaching at Boone middle school, K - 5 music class.
Will McConnell, a 7th-grade boy choir member says, “She was fun, my favorite memory with her would be when we played games outside.” Additionally, Addison Keys, a girl 7th-grade choir member states, “She was a great teacher, my favorite thing about her would be that when she helped us, she always made it fun even if we were all being annoying”
Besides all of the positive things the two students have to say about her, was there anything they disliked about her? Both Addison and Will said that they didn’t dislike anything about her. The only thing Addison disliked about her would be that she couldn’t stay and teach longer.

Mr. Middleton is a 7th grade science teacher in NPMS. He went to college in Iowa State and he said he liked it there. He became a science teacher because he was interested in the subject and wanted to teach people about the subject. He became a baseball coach because he was also interested in and it was his favorite sport from when he was a kid, and he also knew some of the kids from his class so it made it easier to know who’s who for when he puts people in their position.
What he likes about being a teacher is he gets to have fun with kids during the day and teaching them so they can learn and be smarter than the day before. He thought some challenges of being a teacher are keeping up to date with curriculum and making sure you have what you need to teach and it’s been hard this year because of Covid-19.
This is Mr. Middleton and why he decided to become a science teacher.

Over the course of a few years, Madison Pratt, a 7th grade student has become quite famous for her singing voice in school. As most of us know, there is a choir concert called the pops concert. And Madison had gotten the opportunity to have a solo during 6th and 7th grade! When she first received the news, she described the moment as surprising.
Some people have really bad nerves before going on stage. Madison said, “When I did my 6th grade solo I remember sitting backstage and being so nervous. My legs were numb and shaking a little bit. But this year when I was singing I wasn’t as nervous because I had already done it before.”
Like most singers you just know who they are, not the journey they had to get to where they are now. Madison remembers her parents saying to her that she would always dance around the house singing disney. Her parents said she was singing ever since she could talk.
A core memory of hers was when she wrote a song in 1st grade and performed it to her class. And she now sings part one soprano in NPMS choir. It is always good to start at a young age, especially for Madison because of her achievements later in life.
Obviously these solos have been a big achievement for Madison, but she recently got selected to audition for an Iowa statewide honors choir. She states, “This is one of my biggest achievements I have had in my entire 13 years of living.”
Where will Madison go from here? In the future she wants to pursue her musical career whether that be performing such as acting or dancing, or just becoming a worldwide pop star. She has already started songwriting.

Mrs. Taylor, a science teacher. A basketball coach and a volleyball coach. She loves her students and teaching science. After being asked why she likes teaching Mrs. Taylor said “I think it's really fun and the kids really like learning and I just like what I teach.”
One of her students said “I like being in her class because she likes to make things fun” Bailey also said, “My favorite part of being in her class is probably the labs.” Bailey’s favorite unit in science was the earth unit.
Amelia Growdon played volleyball for Mrs. Taylor. While playing volleyball Amelia improved on her outside hitting and serving. She said, “ She was so supportive and very energetic at every game. ”
Mrs. Taylor was great at helping players achieve their goals. Some players like Amelia, Mrs. Taylor helped her with her serving and hitting. Madi Pratt said that Mrs. Taylor was an awesome coach and that helped her with her layups and passing.
Mrs. Taylor said that she loves coaching basketball and volleyball because she gets to see the kids from her previous year of teaching outside the classroom. Many students and players love to have her as a coach and as a teacher because she has so much energy and loves what she does. Many would say that they love the time in the day from when they walk into the classroom to the time when they walk out.

Blythe Knight is a 7th grade student in student council. Her favorite part of being in student council is getting to work with all of her friends and Blythe really enjoys getting to plan activities. She ran for student council because she wanted to make a difference in our school and community.
Blythe says, “I would run for student council next year because I really enjoy it.” She wants to make our school a better place for everyone. Blythe really enjoys setting up all of the fun activities and her favorite thing that she got to do this year was the Bakken bracelets since it was for such a good cause.
Blythe had a very fun time setting up the food drive this year. She hopes to do it again next year. Student council found out who won the food drive by tallying up all the points from each Comet Time. Blythe says that overall, it was really fun to watch Mrs. Taylor get taped to the wall.

Mrs. Hoversten is the middle school band director. She said, “I became a band director because I really enjoy working with people and helping them grow. Music is something I have always loved, so it just made sense!”
Mrs. Hoversten didn’t decide to become a band teacher until halfway through college. She loved being apart of the bands in college, but wanted to do more so she decided to pursue her passion for music. If Mrs. Hoversten wasn’t a band director she would probably be a travel guide or work at a National Park because she loves to hike, plan trips, and travel the world.
Mrs. Hoversten loves coming to work everyday because she gets to work with students ans amazing teachers. She feels so blessed to have other music directors to work with. All the band teachers can bounce ideas off of each other and give each other advice on teaching.
She is the most excited about being able to have a spring concert this year since it got canceled last year due to COVID-19. Her all time favorite conducted piece is a song called Castles and Dragons. This piece even tells a story about a knight riding to a castle to fight dragons.
Mrs. Hoversten is very excited for the band and choir solo and ensemble contest. She loves seeing students work together to create beautiful music. Overall, Mrs. Hoversten says that band is something very inclusive that anyone can do to learn any instrument.

Every year 5th graders from Central and West come to Middle School to start 6th grade. This year was different from previous years because of COVID-19.
Calvin Heitzman is a 6th grader at North Polk Middle School this year. Calvin says that his school year has been affected by COVID-19 this year. They have missed out on the school carnival, everyone has to wear masks, and other things.
Krista Schoenberg, another 6th grader at North Polk Middle School, agrees with Calvin . Both also think that 6th grade is good so far, and that Middle School is better than both West and Central Elementary.
Middle School has more freedom than Elementary, and having multiple teachers is better than having one teacher teaching all of your subjects. If you have multiple teachers, they each know their subject very well. Despite there being more homework in Middle School, Calvin and Krista both agree that Elementary is good, but Middle School is better.
Middle School has more opportunities, such as sports like track or cheer. At West and Central, there are sports, but many are not school sports and students wishing to participate have to sign up for them to do on their own time. Overall, many 6th graders are loving Middle School so far and are excited for the next two years of it.

8th graders are going to high school in 4 months. This can be a scary and exciting time. A lot of 8th graders are excited about football games and being able to drive. They are also excited about high school, but sad to be leaving middle school as well. Ava Ferneding, an 8th grader, says that her favorite parts of middle school were the passing periods and having freedom. Mia Doonan, also an 8th grader, says that she enjoyed Mr. Larson’s class because “he lets us have fun.” Ava, on the other hand, liked Mrs. Collins’s class because she was good at explaining things.
High school is nerve-racking for everyone. Ava says that she is most nervous to get lost, while Mia is nervous about being stressed and homework. 8th graders recently made their schedules and looked at the classes they could take. Ava plans to take Food Prep 1 and 2 so that she can eventually take a baking class.
Both Mia and Ava are going to take Spanish, and are not looking forward to it. Mia plans on participating in volleyball and track, and recently tried out for the dance team. Ava is not sure whether or not she will continue to do track.
The middle school is sad to say goodbye to the class of 2025, but we know they will do great and have a lot of fun in high school.
Mr & Mrs. Leach
Meet Mr. Leach and Mrs. Leach, the brightest couple in the North Polk Middle School. The Leaches are two hard working individuals who get the job done. If you were to come into Mr. Leach's Comet Connection, you would most likely find him sorting through papers for his students, but one clear thing about Mr. Leach is that he loves a good laugh!
But if you needed help with a math problem you would most likely find Mrs. Leach working hard helping students with their math problems.
Our two insightful teachers have been teaching for over 35 years! Mr. Leach began his college education at Oakland Community College, but soon transferred to Missouri State University where he met Ms. Leach. The two enjoy working together because they like to bounce ideas off each other and they appreciate understanding what each other do all day. However, Mr. Leach does admit that sometimes he asks Mrs. Leach far too many questions.
It goes without saying that North Polk students are quite lucky to have this dynamic duo!

Mrs. Stubbs enjoys teaching her second year of journalism to all students. Mrs. Stubbs likes to teach journalism because it's a small class and she gets to know and connect with all of her students in her class. She gets to build a good relationship with her students so she can work easily with her students which she enjoys.
She likes how journalism is very project based and how you get to pick stories and interview people and then write about what they interviewed. Also how people get to share art and show how creative they are or share stories that they like and make it more of a fun environment.
Mrs. Stubbs loves teaching the middle school and getting to meet students in new grades. Mrs. Stubbs started learning about journalism because when she was in college she went to UNI and was a journalist for a few years, so when she started teaching it she said it would make sense to teach journalism.
She started teaching journalism because she loves to write even when she was in school herself. She has been teaching journalism for 2 years, so she's still pretty new to it. She wants to teach journalism for a lot longer and she hopes that the 7th graders she teaches for 6 weeks take the journalism classes in high school. She said that some of the benefits of doing journalism is that it helps you work on your writing. In journalism you are able to write about things you are interested in and it gives you an audience.
At last she says teaching 7th grade journalism is one of the very best things about her day every day.

Mr. Howell is the North Polk middle school choir teacher. He went to college at Iowa State for 5 years and he graduated in 2014. In all of his years in college, he was a music major. He at one point had thought about being a history teacher.
When Mr. Howell decided he wanted to teach choir he was in 7th grade. Mr. Howell decided to teach at NPMS because he wanted to work with cool people like Mrs. Hoverstein and Mr. Weeks. He also had heard that the students were good students.
Mr. Howell really likes teaching and his favorite part is “ The moment when students realize they have more confidence in their singing, or are able to sing something that was difficult for them, that makes me happy and excited to teach!”
Currently, Mr. Howell’s favorite choir songs from each grade are: You will be found for 7th grade, a million dreams for 8th grade and seize the day in 6th grade.
Mr. Howell teaches choir because his choir director made him love choir. “My choir director in middle school was the one that made me realize how much I loved to sing and how to get the best out of her students. She was tough, but was amazing. I teach now because I love to work with students and get to help them do something that they enjoy.” Mr. Howell said.
Mr. Howell describes choir as an activity that is open to everyone no matter who they are, and he encourages students to join choir. “The more the merrier!”

Mia Reichart has been a North Polk student for her entire life. Sadly, she left after Christmas Break. She will be heading to Collins Maxwell.
She will look forward to doing soccer, band, choir, and track at her new school.
One of her favorite memories at NPMS was when she was in 6th grade, and she fit inside a locker. She also enjoyed making new friends. She thinks that her experience at North Polk was good and she will miss her friends. One last thing Reichart wanted to ask is, “Do I still get tickets to the basketball games?”
Her Journalism class threw her a going away party and will miss her very much. Mrs. Stubbs states, “I miss the energy Mia brought to class and her sarcastic humor.”
Hannah Haaland and Kate Mulbauer state, “We will miss Mia and her unique personality.”

Mr. Willey started gaming when he was just six years old. What he played on was a N64. He loved gaming so much because he always will and has loved the concept of gaming. But when it came to the first console he played on the Super Nintendo.
When he played that at the time, he was in his home town of Corydon,Iowa. So as a kid he always got the consoles for holidays like Christmas or his birthday. But when Mr. Willey got into college and into later age he started buying the consoles himself.
He always played games like Call of Duty. But he has and always will love RPG's, an example of that is, Skyrim. He felt like the new game rate was faster when he was younger because his time as a kid felt like it flew by. He liked playing offline for the storylines of the Call of Duty games. But the only time he did that was when his friends weren't online He loved playing online so he could play with his friends and have fun.

Mrs. Rose is the current middle school art teacher. She grew up in Illinois and originally wanted to be a veterinarian. She then decided to be an art teacher in High school.
She got inspired by her strict art teacher in High School. "I had a very strict art teacher in high school. She told me That I was going to be a follower and not a leader.I proved her wrong and I was like I'm gonna be the best art teacher.”
Then she went to Olivet Nazarene University and graduated in 2008.
This is her 5th year teacher at North Polk Middle school. “My favorite part of being an art teacher is seeing kids struggle or be like I'm not good at art and then they gain confidence and they are proud of their work.”
There are some disadvantages to being an art teacher though, "My least favorite part of being an art teacher is seeing kids not try and not put any effort into their art.”
There can be some surprising things about being a teacher in general but being an art teacher may involve more things than they expect: "I would say there's a lot more math involved especially how students need more clay and stuff. So I have to order it.”
"What I like is everyone is all about helping each other out and I feel like I'm a part of a really good team.” Mrs. Rose feels she is a part of a really good team and she enjoys working here at North Polk Middle school.

Mrs. Hoversten, the middle school band teacher, has been teaching at North Polk for 5 years and she enjoys teaching because she loves music and seeing her students grow. Mrs. Hoversten decided to teach band to combine her two passions, music and teaching. “I have loved music as long as I can remember. But, even more than music, I love connecting with students and watching them grow. Band was a way to combine both of these passions.” Mrs. Hoversten decided to teach band when she was learning different instruments in college, “I actually changed majors multiple times in college, ranging from social work, to english, to elementary education.” She says, “I decided I wanted to major in music education when I started to learn all the different band instruments.”
Just like everything else this year, band has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Mrs. Hoversten says, “We have to meet in smaller groups than normal and spread out in the band room. We also use bell covers on all of our brass instruments (like a face mask for an instrument).” Also due to the Coronavirus, the first band performance (band extravaganza) was canceled resulting in the band having to make a video of the performance.
Mrs. Hoversten got married and moved closer to Des Moines. North Polk has a supportive community, a strong music program, and is a great place to work.
Mrs. Hoversten haste to meet in smaller groups than normal and spread out in the band room. We also use bell covers on all of our brass instruments (like a face mask for an instrument). Our first performance of the year (Band Extravaganza) was cancelled, so we filmed a virtual version to share with family and friends.

Spark is a fun and educational exploratory in North Polk Middle School. It allows students to have fun while learning. The students there do any activities of their picking as well as doing certain things that require life skills. One student decided to do coding and testing he chose to do coding because it's fun it requires coding, which is a life skill as well and also helps educate throughout coding and learning how to do things for electronics he decided to do this activity in a large open space with no distractions and it no people besides himself. To do the activities although you don't get to do this exploratory for the whole year it does last for a month. So you have a whole month of doing whatever activity you pick until your next exploratory this allows the students to have fun while learning.

Lots of people know Mr. Willey as a social studies teacher, but does everyone know that he was also a volleyball coach.
Mr. Willeys favorite part of volleyball is that it is a very teamworking sport. He likes that volleyball is an inside sport and the only inside sport that he has coached. He also likes to start the school year off fun, and volleyball is a good way to get to know students.
Mr. Willey would like to start a men's volleyball team. He thinks it would be fun, but would need enough interest in it to start one.
He started liking volleyball in college. He liked to play it in college just for fun. He also likes volleyball because he can go to students games and support them.
The very first 3 years that Mr. Willey taught at NPMS he also coached volleyball. He coached middle school volleyball and taught 6th grade social studies.
He was very busy when he was coaching volleyball, he was also coaching track and directed the school play.
Mr. Willey would consider coaching volleyball again. If he did coach again he said he would for sure coach 7th grade.

Mrs. Kallal is an FCS teacher at North Polk Middle School. When she was in high school, she started off wanting to be an elementary teacher. She then decided she wanted to teach middle schoolers and not elementary students. She chose FCS to teach instead of elementary.
Some of Mrs. Kallal’s best experiences teaching FCS is sewing, helping students learn and figure out problems and, her favorite, baking cookies. There are also some down-side experiences she has teaching FCS. One of them is when students are not at school. She has difficulties trying to work with them if they’re not at school. She also doesn’t like grading. “That’s my least favorite part of the job. If I could just keep teaching and giving assignments, having kids turn things in. I just don’t like grading.” Mrs. Kallal stated.
Some of Mrs. Kallal’s positives to being a teacher is having the summers off, weekends off and having the holidays. “It’s a huge perk.” Mrs. Kallal stated. Another positive thing for her is working with the students and teaching them life skills for them to use in the future. She also has had some stressful situations being a teacher. When she’s not prepared with something, that's when things get really stressful for her. “Usually when I’m prepared everything goes well, but when I'm not prepared, it doesn’t go well.” It may be stressful when issues arise at the school, like the power going out. Mrs. Kallal has experienced something similar to that. “...we had like a gas leak somewhere or some weird smell, people were getting sick, so we had to evacuate to the church.”
Mrs. Kallal recommends teaching a class someday. “I love having student teachers, I enjoy helping students, especially from Iowa State, help become a teacher and practice being a teacher.”

Mr. Wolf has been very stressed out lately because of the changes due to COVID-19. He has had a hard time trying to figure out what would be the best option to keep his students the safest because he said that “Everything is so new and unknown”. Mr. Wolf and Mr. Richards have been working their hardest to keep their students safe and they have been struggling to make decisions that they think are best. Mr. Wolf has been adjusting to the new changes he says that
“We have kids coming in from 3 different doors, you guys are going straight to your classrooms in the morning instead of going to the gym and you don't stop at your locker every period you go straight to your next class, and we have 6 different lunches lunch starts at 10:30 and ends at 1:14.”
When Mr Wolf tries to reduce his stress by doing yard work, he said that he loves to do yard work and does anything to try and get outside. When COVID-19 shut down schools Mr. Wolf was still doing his normal schedule working the same days a week, and the same hours so nothing really changed for him. Overall, COVID- 19 has been very hard for Mr. Wolf and the NPMS staff.

Some people may think that online school is easy and some may think it would be fun, but according to Madison Pratt it's hard and difficult. One thing that Pratt says that she dislikes about online school is that it's harder to get the teacher's attention.
Madison Pratt is one of the many students that are doing online learning. Something that Pratt would change about online school are “People's attitudes.” Pratt said lunch is hard because says “We have 20 minutes to make a lunch and eat it” Pratt has a small lunch because she has no time to eat a large lunch. Another thing Pratt doesn't like about lunch is that “We can't eat during class”
Pratt says that she said that she wanted to do online learning and her parents wanted her to do online school because of her mom's job. “Because my mom is getting exposed because she's in the medical field.” Pratt says that it's hard to talk with some friends “Because some friends don't have phones.”

Mr. Middleton, the 7th-grade science teacher, had to quarantine for 3 weeks because he was exposed to COVID 19.
Mr. Middleton says online teaching is challenging, “It was challenging because you can't problem-solve.”
He says the worst part of online teaching is, “you’re just not around everybody it’s not the same when you’re together, you just don’t get those relationships at the beginning of the year getting started.” The hardest part of teaching online he states, “ Was getting people to turn their homework in.”
His favorite part about teaching online is the lessons are more intentional meaning he got to choose the lessons that he wanted us to learn. Also, “Everything was more organized,” Mr. Middleton says.
Mr. Middleton states the weirdest part of teaching online is, “Not getting to see everybody’s faces.”
Mr. Middleton’s teaching style was affected because we have to do a lot more online projects like google slides, or google docs.
COVID-19 is affecting teaching in general because attitudes have changed because no one takes school for granted anymore.

There are many different views on what is the best music because there are many different kinds of music in the media. Mr. Willey and Ms. Halbloom have different views on what is good music and what is not so good music.
Mr. Willey thinks that pop music is the most popular type of music. Not only because most students listen to pop music, but also because the songs on the radio are mostly pop music. He also believes that the North Polk Middle School students do not listen to the same genre of music. He thinks the cause of this is because students have much more access to different kinds of music, the sources being things like YouTube.
Mr. Willey’s opinion on music today is not a very positive one. He believes that music today doesn't have as much meaning. He thinks that the music that would play on the radio when he was growing up is generally happier and superficial.
“The songs that students play today don't have as much deep meaning” Mr. Willey states. “I think that the music was better when I was growing up” With that being said, Mr. Willie's favorite band is Mumford and Sons.
Likewise, Ms. Halbloom has some of the same opinions as Mr. Willey. However, Ms. Halbloom listens to a variety of different music genres.
Like Mr. Willey, Ms. Halbloom thinks that students listen to pop music the most because it’s energetic and catchy. She believes that it’s more laid back than rap but also peppier than sad songs. She believes that there is a balance.
Similarly, she also believes that peers influence the kinds of music that others listen to. She thinks that the area that people live in can influence music taste.
“If you were to live in Iowa, then the type of music you listen to would be different then a Californian,” Ms. Halbloom exclaims. “There’s more representation based on where you live.” New artists can also persuade the music people to listen to.
Like Ms. Halbloom, Mr. Willey believes that the most popular music can vary based on where you live. Lastly, both teachers believe that a variety of different kinds of music is beneficial for a healthy balance in life.

Mr. Middleton is a seventh grade science teacher at the North Polk Middle School. When he was around 12 or 13 he really found his passion for science. In seventh grade, he had a teacher who taught the scientific method. The teacher made the lessons fun and easy to follow.
In science, Mr. Middleton liked how you can learn through experimenting and exploring. This is also what really made him want to teach. He said his favorite type of science is life science. He likes how we see it in our everyday lives and can make connections through our own experiences.
Mr. Middleton had been teaching at the school for multiple years and had seen the curriculum change. He likes the new Amplify curriculum because it is mainly done through the computer. He appreciates how it creates online models and simulations for students. The website also provides standard based activities and lessons. Finally the test given through the website allows students to know how they did.
Mr. Middleton said, “North Polk always has good kids that seem to be really interested in science.” This makes teaching more enjoyable when the kids are more engaged. One of Mr. Middleton's favorite parts about teaching is when you can see kids focus and try and then get to see their work pay off. He said it’s great to see kids just have a lightbulb go off in their head and make connections or think on a deeper level.
Mr. Middleton has been a science teacher for many years, but he teaches students more than just science. He has taught students about appreciating what they have because not everyone does. These small lessons inside the normal school lessons are what let you know you have a teacher who really cares about their students.

Mrs. Young’s views on teaching have almost always been good. Her love for writing since second grade has led her to where she is now. She has taught at many different schools and all of them had their ups and downs.
As aforementioned, Mrs. Young has loved to write and read. However, one of her favorite things about teaching is seeing the light bulbs go off in a student’s brain. This is the direct cause of her loving to work in small groups because she loves to see her students understand the concept and figure it out for themselves. Not only because she is the cause of that, but also, she loves knowing that one of her kids got the concept and understands it. Seeing a child talk it through is one of her favorite things about teaching.
She wanted a job that had a solid trade, a stable career essentially. After her dad got laid off when she was young, she knew that when she would go into the workforce, her job had to be beneficial. She had always loved kids, and teaching gave her a stable income. After that, she knew that she could take an English major so that she could have options when she got a job. She knew that she wanted to do teaching because she had almost always loved kids.
Furthermore, Mrs. Young loves almost all subjects however, if she could be a teacher for a non-core class, she would teach art. She loves art because she loves the creativity you can put into artwork; she also enjoys the amount of fun you can have while creating artwork. Mrs. Young loves to see the outcome when a piece gets finished.
Out of reading and writing, she benefits more from reading because she states, “You can just get lost in a book.” She does enjoy writing quite a bit, though. “With writing,” she declares, “you can feel more accomplished when you finish.”
Lastly, Mrs. Young believes that having one class be two periods long can have it’s up’s and downs. She likes to be able to know kids for longer; she also thinks that some concepts don’t need two periods to grasp.
Moreover, out of the four schools that she taught at, Mrs. Young says that North Polk Middle School is the best out of all of them. Mrs. Young had wanted to teach for a while and had taught seventh grade at all of her four schools. She likes that seventh-graders still like to learn but are old enough to question the world around them. “Out of all four of the schools I’ve taught at North Polk Middle School is my favorite.”

Mrs. Taylor is the sixth-grade science teacher at North Polk Middle School. She started off wanting to be a third-grade teacher. When she was in her second year of college she took a class about teaching a middle school class and liked the ages of middle schoolers. Mrs. Taylor decided to teach middle schoolers instead of third graders so she had to pick a subject to teach. She picked science because her parents liked science and she always liked science.
Mrs. Taylor got her degree in elementary/middle school education at the University of Northern Iowa. She always wanted to be a teacher. One memory she has is playing school with her younger sister. She was always the teacher and thought it would be fun to teach her sister.
One of Mrs. Taylor's favorite teachers was her eighth-grade English teacher because he made it fun and the way he read books out loud to the students made it entertaining. In her free time, she likes to spend time with her family, playing video games, and being creative.
She wants her students to have fun in science and be interested in science. This year in sixth grade there is an exploratory called Spark. The students get to plant, code, and build things or do the things they're interested in. Mrs. Taylor gets to teach this class. She hopes when her students leave her classes feeling that she cared about them and learned a lot about science. Mrs. Taylor says “North Polk is an awesome school to work at and all the teachers get along well and the students are awesome."

Mr. Willey is a social studies teacher at North Polk Middle School. He went to the University of Northern Iowa. He wanted to start teaching because he enjoys being with kids and teaching social studies. Mr. Willey enjoys building relationships with students. To build relationships with he tries to be nice, fun, and goofy and he let the little things slide.
When he was in school he liked social studies, which doesn't come as a surprise because he is a social studies teacher. Mr. Willey loves teaching but doesn’t enjoy grading because it takes up his weekend. In social studies, his favorite unit to teach is energy because it's very important and the class gets to do the debate. If Mr. Willey wasn’t a teacher that he would want to be a youth pastor or just a pastor which is still a form of teaching, and he would still build relationships with students through that job. He shared some advice for people who want to be teachers saying that at times teaching is difficult but in the end, it's super rewarding and fun to build relationships with students.

Mr. Larson is an eighth-grade literacy teacher at North Polk Middle School. The teachers around him push him to be a better teacher for his students. Mr. Larson was a good writer, which is why he majored in English even though he originally wanted to study physical therapy. After he switched it made a lot of sense considering that literacy was one of his favorite subjects in school. Mr. Larson did very well academically in school, and he was an A and B student. One of the reasons he worked so hard in school was so he could participate in school sports. Mr. Larson’s favorite school sports were football, baseball, and track. Out of those his favorite was baseball because he loved working together as a team. Some other extracurricular activities were student council, business professional of America, and the French club. As you can tell Mr. Larson’s life did not go as he planned as a young child, especially because he wanted to live in San Diego, California.

Mrs. Collins is the 8th grade math teacher here at North Polk Middle School. There is so much more to Mrs. Collins that we don’t know about. She grew up in Ankeny, Iowa, but it was much smaller while she was growing up. She didn’t play any sports as a kid and she never even thought she’d become a teacher until she met a very special teacher that helped her through her troubles in the class and they became friends. Many teachers throughout her years growing up inspired her to keep working hard in school, and eventually, she decided she wanted to help kids the same way and become a teacher. She ended up going to Northwest Missouri State University and pursuing her career to become a teacher. Of course, she has her favorite and least favorite things with her busy job. Her favorite thing to do as a teacher is helping the students learn and teaching them. Her least favorite thing is grading.
Mrs. Collins thinks North Polk is special because it is the best of what Iowa has: We have small-town communities together in a good location and have the good advantages of bigger city schools, but not many of the disadvantages. She also believes that we have the perfect amount of students to know all of them and care for them all to give all the opportunities bigger schools can give. Now, outside of school, Mrs. Collins has a husband and two daughters. She enjoys spending her free time with them and walking her three dogs as well! She also enjoys reading and spending time with her friends. Overall, Mrs. Collins has made our eighth-grade math classes very interesting here at NPMS. She is a very humble, enjoyable person who has a passion for teaching her students and helping them succeed.

Mr. Furlong is a North Polk Middle School (NPMS) Physical Education teacher. He teaches 7th and 6th-grade physical education. He's also one of the 8th-grade football coaches. Mr. Furlong is excited to watch the kids grow up and overcome obstacles.
Mr. Furlong enjoys teaching because there is always something new for the kids to learn. Furlong played college football and baseball. He attended Central College. Furlong was a four sport athlete in middle school as well as high school. He did football, baseball, track, and basketball. Furlongs two most successful sports were baseball and football. When Mr. Furlong was in Middle School he wanted to be a pro athlete.
Mr. Furlong said that the hardest thing about teaching is keeping students under control. It is not easy to keep up to 25 kids under control each period. Some kids enjoy doing other things and not sports. His favorite subject in school was science which is surprising because now he teaches physical education. He might be older than his prime in high school and college but he can still ball and dunk. Mr. Furlong was an average student but that didn't stop him from one day becoming a teacher and coach.

Ms. Halbloom is a literacy teacher at North Polk Middle School. Before Ms. Halbloom was a teacher she wanted to be a pediatrician, but she decided she wanted to be a teacher because of her faith and her mom. Her mom helped her because she was a teacher as well. When she grew up, she became a teacher at North Polk Middle School.
Ms. Halbloom has been a teacher for 3 years. She likes her job but likes it even better when her students are respectful. Ms. Halbloom enjoys building relationships with students. When she became a teacher her goal was to get her students to understand things and help them go above and beyond. Ms. Halbloom wants to impact her student’s lives in a positive way. Ms. Halbloom's favorite memory was when one of her students called her dad and told him how much she appreciated him. After this video, Ms. Halbloom was happy she did this lesson and she can't wait to do it again. Ms. Halbloom's study hall is fun for her but she doesn't like when her students disobey her. Ms. Halbloom's advice for future teachers is to have patience and make sure you understand the kids well.

In Syria, there is currently a conflict going on between four countries, who all play an important role. Today we will be seeing how this conflict is affecting North Polk students and staff here at the middle school.
Mr. Daniels , 6th grade Global Studies teacher, discussed the issue with his 6th graders in class. He said, “To sum it up, the conflict is over three cultures, fighting for power.” He continued, “I think that there needs to be more give and take come to terms to work out a resolution.”
When asked “How do you think this conflict affects you?” He then answered “Money is the big one. Because we pay tax, it is used to fund the war, numerous-economy, soldiers, etc." I then asked “How do you think this conflict affects your students? To sum it up, his response was, “However it plays out in the end, it will shape that region of the world." Mr. Daniels believes it is important student know about this crisis because it affects their future. He said, "Things happening now affect their future."

The Media Center has 124 new books and many renovations. Mrs. Slechta, North Polk school librarian, had some interesting things to say about the changes over the summer.
Students now have more options in the Media Center. Mrs. Slechta shared, "I ordered a lot of new books this year! I always look for award-winning books and books that have received awesome reviews." She added new mysteries and ghost stories because she received several requests for those types of stories.
The new books will be promoted in numerous places. Mrs. Slechta explained, “I started to promote them with the book tasting, a slide on the t.v. and soon I will be starting my library installment editions in the restrooms. I also plan to do different displays during the school year.”
Based on what Mrs. Slechta has said, the library is becoming more advanced and recognized to many people. The library can be many people's favorite place in the school. People can go there and not get distracted, and can read or do their homework in peace.
The library isn’t just about getting away from the world, it’s also about connecting with it. In our school library, there is a variety of genes and topics of books. Students can dive into a book and get lost in all the interesting facts they never knew you could learn. For those who don’t like to read, there are chromebooks in the library that are for use if checked out.
Coming to the library is peaceful. The library is a place where people get away from all the noise and craziness in the world. You can get lost in your book and dream of you being one of the characters in the book your reading.

This year every teacher got to decorate their classroom door. Some of the teachers put bitmojis on their doors and others put things they enjoy doing, have done, or things about their family. Mr. Bird put his dogs, Denver Broncos logo, ice cream, and North Polk on his door. Ms. Halbloom had pictures of family, traveling, and her dog Luna.
The teachers had to choose what to put on their doors. Mrs. Taylor said, “ We found out we were putting things on our door before the end of last year, so I started looking at things other people have done.” The teachers also had to think about the impression their door has on their students. Mr. Bird said “ It depends on the student. Some students will see Iowa’s logo and be happy that he likes the same team as them, then the ones that are Iowa state fans may think differently.”
Mr. Willey liked decorating his door. He said, “ It's cool because then they can get to know me better.” Mr. Willey’s door has things he likes such as teaching, volleyball, reading, Star Wars, movies, and coffee. When asked if he had the chance to change anything on his door, what would it be, he said “ I would probably change it to my students and things that we would be doing in our classroom.”
Our first question for Mrs. Taylor was “what do you think students think of you when they see your door?” and she replied “ how much they have in common” Mrs. Taylor has images of her family, friends, coffee, mountains, sports, music, UNI, science, Hawkeyes, volleyball and more on her door.
Sixth grade students love band and chorus
By: Olivia Canavan
Both NPMS teachers in the music department like their jobs very much. They are putting a lot of work in preparing for their concerts. Mrs. Hoversten knows exactly what kind of songs her band class is going to play for the winter concert. Band will be playing a slow song, a fast song, and definitely a Christmas song. The vocal teacher Mr. Howell, is not quite sure yet on the songs, but he has a general idea of what he wants to do. Both teachers have been teaching their subject for 6 years. Mrs. Hoversten taught 2 years at Greene County Middle School and 4 years at NPMS. This is Mr. Howell’s first year at NPMS, but he taught 5 years at Belmond-Klemme. He taught 7-12 grade choir and drama at Belmond Klemme.
They both have certain things that they really like about their subject. Mrs. Hoversten loves when something just clicks. Like a lightbulb in someone's head once they get a part music they’ve been struggling with. Mrs. Hoversten likes the song “Blue Ridge Reel.” She started band in high school, but she was interested in band since elementary school. What she liked about doing band was the people helping her get through it. Her first instrument was the trumpet. She also did high school marching band. She didn’t even plan to do band until half way through high school though.
Mr. Howell enjoys singing in big groups. Mr. Howell’s favorite musical is the new Mean Girls musical. Mr. Howell started singing in elementary school. Outside of singing, he enjoys taking care of his dog. It’s his first dog and named Gustav.

There have been many new students this year. In 6th grade North Polk has 4 new students, 7th grade has 8 new students, and 8th grade has 5 new students. Several new students said they felt very welcomed when they come to North Polk. Olivia Canavan said “Everyone helped me when I was lost and when I couldn't open my locker.”
The students went to different schools before North Polk. Kennedy Davenport said that “The biggest difference between my old school and this school is the number of students in each class. In Madrid there is was around 40 to 80 students in my class.” Olivia said “At my old school the majority of people were mean straight to your face. At North Polk they are nice or helping when you’re struggling. Also 6th grade was in elementary”
At North Polk there is the option to play in school sports. Olivia Canavan is going to play softball and basketball, Kennedy is playing volleyball, and Ava Jenkins is playing volleyball. This year there are students from Texas, Alaska, Ankeny, and Madrid.
When the students come at the beginning of the school year Mr. Richards, Mr. Wolf, or Mr. Tanyag will give them and their family a private tour of the North Polk Middle School. When a student comes in the middle of the year Ms. Tanyag will pair them up with another student that will help them learn their way around. Ms. Tanyag has a new student group for 7th grade and 8th grade. Even though there is a 7th and 8th grade new student group all of the 6th graders are new to the building.

NPMS has two new social studies teachers this year. Mr. Daniels is the new 6th grade social studies teacher. He loves teaching 6th grade social studies because he can help a lot of students at once. For him the best part about teaching is seeing students grow and what they can learn through the year. So he can see how much they can improve throughout the year with a 150 kids each year. He said the best part about North Polk is the friendly teachers and students. The jobs he had before this was baseball coach in east Iowa for 5 years and he was a teacher there too. He coached and taught at Perry for 2 years. When he was younger he wanted to be a principal. He looks up to his father because he has always been a good role model to him and showed him to be responsible and trustworthy.
Mr. Spittler is the new 8th grade social studies teacher. He loves teaching especially history. He loves teaching kids about the past because it helps us understand the world we live in today. He says the teachers and the students are amazing, and he is fortunate to call North Polk home. The jobs he had before coming to North Polk is at the high school at Roland-Story in Story-City. He also worked in the business world for 15 years. When he was younger he wanted to be a pro football player when he figured out that was not going to happen he wanted to be a sports broadcaster. The people that he looks up to his dad and his wife. They are both strong supportive people. The best part about teaching is seeing his students and getting to know them.
