I am hell bound
I wonder if I will ever be heard
I hear the guns firing and siren blaring
I see bottles and containers
I want to make up for my weakness
I am hell bound
I pretend to be happy everyday
I feel the cold medal badge and gloved hands
I touch the blood spread over the ground
I worry that I’m not strong enough
I cry every minute of my life inside
I am hell bound
I understand that things won’t get better
I say I can fight this fight alone
I dream of the demons and what they have done
I try to escape this cage of regret
I hope I might be able to trust and love once more
But for now, I am hell bound
I was in the meadows playing at sea,
a lot of water brushed over me.
I got to look over my life at sea,
Wondering what the problem was, why I was sorry…
As I got older, I understood why, why I was unhappy,
and why I was so shy.
As I'm in the shadows, I see a girl once like me.
She said, “Come play with me please?”
I said, “I can't. I have no color in my soul,
nothing to touch, nothing to hold.”
She asked me why?
I said it's too long of a story for you to see
or cherish beneath me.
She said my soul was pure. I just can no longer see.
She said “We are the same person, and we are happy as can be.”
“So come sit with me by my willow tree, and we can talk about it, you see.”

The hero stands in front of me once more.
Telling me my life is not war.
She always asks if I am tired.
Like her love is always required.
There she goes again saying she loves me.
Like she knows who I am supposed to be.
She always tells me she’s going to save me,
But I’m already down on my knees.
Go back into the past,
But the time has already passed.
You were never my hero.
Even though you may have been before.
Oh, look at me now they say; like I’m some chore.
My anger has covered up who I truly am.
Oh, how you have torn me apart like a traffic jam.
You never came to save me.
You left me to flee.
Oh, how you left and that’s key.
You have twisted my words.
Broken my heart into thirds.
You know nothing about what happened.
So why do you try to pretend like you do.
All this trama you put me through.
You say this friendship doesn’t need to end.
Like I am a wound to tend.
I know I am a villain.
Like I am just a fill in.
You are twisting every word I say.
Why don’t you just go away.
You are not my hero; you never were.
Don’t act like you prefer.
I may have once been in your wonderland,
But obviously things didn’t go as planned.
Oh, how you are so grand,
But I stand knowing.
You were never my hero.
Why are you still here?
Have you realized what you’ve become.
You may be tired,
But this used to be the world I desired.
Go back into the past.
I’m sure I will be there at last.
This war you created in your head.
The road you have gone ahead.
I will save you when I’m there.
So please take care.
I will save as long as I am there.
We make such a good pair.
You were never a villain in this story.
Just don’t take away my glory.
I will be the knight in this fairy tale.
Just please don’t bail.
Just take my hand,
And everything will go as planned.
I know you think you're a villain,
But under all of it, I know that you fought.
Oh, please don’t glare.
There is a beating heart somewhere.
I’m sorry you know.
Please don’t put on this show.
I’m sorry for everything I’ve done.
Please don’t leave me like everyone.
What about all the fun we had?
Please don’t get so mad.
I recognize that I did you wrong,
But maybe I’ve been the villain all along.
Just trust me that you sense what is right and wrong.
We don’t need to end this way.
I don't know what to say,
But know that you're not the villain.
You were never a villain.

Life is not a game.
When you mess up,
there is no one to blame.
The life you knew, you must reclaim.
Since you messed up,
there is no one to blame.
You may end up in the hall of fame.
But if you screw up,
there is no one to blame.
One mistake could ruin your name.
If you screw up,
life is not a game.
This new you is what you became.
Since you messed up,
life is not a game.
Different and similar are the same.
If you mess up,
life is not a game;
there is no one to blame.

Oh great pop tarts for you are delicious
Even though you are not nutritious
Those who think to put you in a toaster are suspicious
Oh great pop tarts you are delicious
You give me a reason to be overambitious
If you touch my pop tarts you will make me feel malicious
Oh great pop tarts you are delicious
Even though you aren’t nutritious
Those who put you in a toaster will make me vicious
Oh great pop tarts you are delicious

No greater shock than an upset
when the underdog’s game winner goes through the net.
Number 1 seeds are the biggest threat,
only one time has a 16 seed destroyed a bet.
There is one objective: survive and move on.
Only nine times has a number 2 seed lost to a 15 seed;
Ohio State lost to Oral Roberts, indeed.
It isn’t exactly guaranteed
that a number 1 or 2 seed will beat a 15 or 16 seed.
There is one objective: survive and move on.
68 teams make the field
as the entire bracket is revealed.
No teams ever want to yield;
your team feels good when the game is sealed.

The gravel crunched beneath my feet as I walked. I was dreading today. Another math test and probably another D if not worse. It wouldn't be quite so awful if my sister wasn't Miss Perfect. The teachers always expected that I be as good as she was in school. How could I live up to that, I wondered as I looked up at the blue sky.
There weren't any clouds, but there was plenty of shade. This path was lined with old oak and maple trees all up and down it. At the end stood Henry. Everyone called that tree Henry for some reason. It was the biggest tree I had ever seen, and my uncle was always bragging how it was the oldest in the country.
"Three hundred years-old, Mariah! Three hundred! Imagine that!" he would always say as we walked past it. It's like, I know, I know, Uncle Frank. It's old.
I must have been really thinking about math because before I knew it, I was at old Henry. In front of me the huge trunk was just as solid as ever. I've tried wrapping my arms around it, but can never get my hands to touch.
Looking up, I noticed something that made me completely (well, almost completely) forget about math class.
I noticed the leaves were already browning on the edges. Now, we don't have much for seasons in Oklahoma, but trees don't start that until at least a month or more yet. Quickly I sucked in some breath as my gaze went to the lowest branch. It had blackened almost like it had been in a fire. The leaves attached were completely brown.
I dropped my bag and went right up to the tree. My hands felt the rough bark, and I reached as high as I could. I wasn't as tall as Miss Perfect either, but I could just barely reach the damaged branch. Looking at my fingers, they were covered in black.
"Mariah! What are you doing with Henry? School's in five minutes!"
That obnoxious voice belonged to my best friend Jaden. "Come look at this, Jade."
"I don't have time for a stupid tree and neither do you, Mariah. Let's go!"
I took one last look at the tree. I knew it wasn't right, and I was going to find out why.
After a supper of my mom hounding me about the math test (it wasn't quite as bad as I thought), I escaped to my room. Miss Perfect had our laptop, so I turned on the old desktop computer that I had stashed in the corner. It took forever to load, and some sites just crashed, but at least I didn't have anyone else fighting me over it.
When I finally got it to Google, I paused. What do you search to figure out something like this? My hands quickly typed tree dying. Too many results. Okay, what else can I type? blackened tree branches, dead leaves
The second site seemed promising. Clicking into it, I waited for it to load.
"What are you working on, Einstein?" Miss Perfect popped her head into my room. I ignored her and just stared at the greenish screen.
"Well, let's just see..." Before I could shut off the monitor or yell at her to go back to the perfect, weirdo planet she came from, she turned the monitor to her. Quickly her face got serious. "What on earth are you trying to figure out?"
I stammered, "I-it-it's nothing. I was just curious, that's all."
"Curious, huh? When did a C+ science student all of a sudden become interested in plant biology?" she said with a cruel glance at me. She scrolled deftly through the page. "That's a bunch of junk science there. You could only hurt a little weed of a tree with that stuff it's listing."
I moved myself back in front of the monitor to see what she was seeing. Yes, the pictures showed little trees, but it was exactly the same kind of damage on Old Henry's branches. "Show's what you know," I mumbled.
"What?" she snapped at me.
"Well, you're wrong," I said, this time with a little more confidence. "Old Henry's branches look exactly like that." I pointed to the picture on the right with two blackened branches.
Miss Perfect's smirk had left her face. In fact, she was looking a little pale. "Are you okay?"
"I'm...fine," she muttered. Abruptly, she said, "Why don't you spend your time doing something that could actually make you smarter and quit wasting your time on this?" She turned and slammed the door behind her.
I met Jaden at Old Henry early the next morning. She had texted me after Miss Perfect left my room last night. I thought she could help get me up in the tree, so that's how we ended up with her on all fours in the mud and me standing on her back.
"Can you move it along a little quicker?" Jaden grimaced.
"I'm almost there." My hands grasped the lowest, healthy branch, and I heaved myself up.
"Oh man! Look at my knees! My mom's going to kill me!"
I tried to find a good spot to sit without falling off the branch and said, "Just use my jacket, well Miss Perfect's jacket, to wipe it off." My jacket had gotten a big rip in it, so Mom threw this one to me as I was heading out the door. As I looked at the branches, it seemed like the blackened ones were even darker if that was possible. I also noticed five other ones that were partly black.
After my inspection, I hopped down.
"Wow, I like her jacket! It makes me look like a real supermodel," Jaden said trying to strut like Tyra Banks.
I still had my mind on the new branches when Jaden interrupted my thoughts. "Mariah, what's this?" She was unfolding a little piece of paper. A receipt.
"Hey, twerp!" It was like she sensed there was something wrong. Miss Perfect came out of nowhere and snatched the receipt from Jaden's hand.
"Give it back!" Jaden yelled. Miss Perfect just looked at her and crinkled the paper in her hand. "That was really rude, Patricia."
"Yeah, and so is your face," Perfect Patricia shot back.
There has to be something on that reciept, I thought. Why would she care otherwise? With Patricia distracted by Jaden, I moved around to her side with the reciept.
"Oooo, big comeback from Miss Perfect! Why are you here anyway?" Jaden was now about five inches from Patricia's face. I took that as my opening. Quickly, I reached for her hand. Out of sheer surprise Patricia let go. The next few moments were like in slow motion.
I backed up out of her reach, but she was still like a statue. I uncrinkled the paper and saw what was on it. I looked up at my sister, Patricia. I looked at someone who I realized I didn't really know even after growing up together.
"This is from the hardware store. These, these chemicals were the same ones from the website last night," I looked right into Patricia's eyes. Unexpectedly, she looked away first.
"It was a dare, alright? It wasn't supposed to hurt the dumb tree, just a stupid prank that I didn't think through." I continued to stare at her. Jaden, in shock, kept the silence between us.
"Mariah, I--," Patricia's voice faltered. Who was this person? This person who I always thought was perfect, was a better version of me? I realized that no longer was my big sis Miss Perfect or Perfect Patricia who I always felt like I had to live up to. She was just Patricia.

Something she thought, something was playing Mandy’s favorite song. Boom! Mandy fell on the floor, waking her up. By the time she got off the floor, the song had stopped and she realized that it was her alarm on her phone telling her it was time to get up. She grabbed her phone, looked at her mom’s badge, and went downstairs to the laundry room to find her clothes for the day.
She found some jean shorts and a plain black shirt and some tennis shoes and went back upstairs to change. On her way up her dog, Penny jumped on her and since her stairs are clear, round, and have a metal railing, Mandy does gymnastics so she was able to push off the railing and do a backflip and land on her feet with her phone and clothes still in hand.
Just then, her dad, Mike came running into their luxurious living room to see if Mandy was all right. She was all right of course. Her dad was persistent and kept asking her questions. All Mandy could think about was State volleyball that night, and the gymnastics championships she had the next day. After that, she scolded Penny saying,
“How could you pull me down the stairs, Penny?”
Penny just barked twice and jumped on the comfy gray couch and layed there. Mandy was so excited for the day because her best friend is coming over after school to get ready for State volleyball. Emma’s family was really poor, so Mandy and her dad bought Emma all her volleyball stuff.
She was also really excited because it was Emma’s birthday in two days and Mandy's gift to her is her room and the guest room for her mom. Mandy didn’t feel like going upstairs anymore so she just did a few backflips to the bathroom just down the hallway from the kitchen.
Mandy went back up the stairs for one last time before she went to school. She grabbed her backpack and looked over at her mom’s police badge, she missed her so much, she thought as she went down their spiral staircase to go to her neighbor’s house.
Carrie and Al took Mandy to school as unusual. Once she got to class she sat by her boyfriend. Mandy’s boyfriend thought Mandy, Emma, and August would be too busy getting ready for volleyball to come to school today. o he was holding hands with Macy and sending her love notes and making fun of Mandy not knowing she was sitting right next to them. Mandy then sent him a text saying,
“No more texting me!!!!! IT'S OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Mandy screamed, then stormed out of the class and ran home.
6 Hours Later
Mandy got ready for the volleyball game and went to the school to go to the volleyball game, but when she got there August was there but Emma was not. Her dad had driven her but as soon as they got to the school her dad had to take a phone call with someone she didn’t know. Mandy’s dad came in and took Mandy and August down to the Police Station unexpectedly, they didn’t have time to tell their coach but Mandy’s dad did. Once Mandy got inside, she saw Emma’s mom crying her eyes out. When she realized what was happening she got down on her knees and started crying her eyeballs out too. August got down on her knees and started to calm down Mandy. August didn’t know Emma very well but she did know that she was super nice, kind, funny, and a really good friend to Mandy, a better friend than she could ever be to her. Mandy and Emma’s mom went to the coroner's office to identify Emma’s body and just to see her body.
The police had said that they had the best officers on the case but Mandy wasn’t satisfied. The next morning she went over to Carrie and Al’s house and told them she was not going to be going to school for at least three days and said that she would still be doing online school as she tried to hold back her tears. With one big breath, she said since she and her dad were the richest people in Iowa, they were making it a major crime case and that Carrie, Al, Riley, Lucy, and Craig should all take the case and make it the highest priority of the division. Al came down after Mandy had told Carrie everything and explained that they had already taken on the case because they knew that she would ask this because Emma was so close to Mandy. Mandy then sat at home for three days and cried.
Three Days later
Homecoming dress-up days are a big thing at Iowa Academy for the Youth Middle School. But did Manny know it was homecoming week? No Mandy would never take the chance of getting Boy by the entire Middle School. Once Mandy got to the bus stop for her private school, she knew she was in trouble. Every single kid at the bus stop was wearing 80s clothing and hairstyles. she would have just gone home but her dad went to Kansas City for the day for work.
Mandy sat by the tree so nobody noticed her and when the bus arrived she was the last one that was alone in the front seat. She was also the last one so no one noticed her. She sat in the back of all of her classes and never went to her locker. Mandy sat in the back of the class and did all of her work right but when she turned in her Google form assessment, the teacher said, “Good job Mandy, you got 50 out of 50!”
Everyone looked around for me Annie, she sunk down in the corner of the classroom and put her sweatshirt over her body. “Luckily,” her friend Macy recognized your sweatshirt and pointed her out to the rest of the class. After her friend shouted her name she ran out of class to the bathroom and slammed the door and locked it. Her friend August ran after her saying,
“Shutup Macy you always make everything worse.”
The bathroom and the gyms because those were always Mandy's favorite bathrooms because they were so big. August knew about Emma's death the new Mandy took it hard, she also knew Carrie and Al, Mandy’s cop neighbors haven’t solved her murder yet. But August didn't know that Mandy's boyfriend had cheated on her with Macy. Mandy has been spending a lot of time with Carrie at the Des Moines Major Crimes division.
August found Mandy in the handicap stall crying her eyeballs out. She was thinking about her mom and her badge in her room and how she would have been on the case she would have solved it by now. August sat and talked to her and then called your mom to see if she can pick Mandy and August from school and take them to me anyhow where they would remain for the rest of the day.
August finally got Mandy
to calm down in the car on the way to Mandy's house once they got there they went up to her and saw Emma's birthday present. Since Mandy's Dad wasn't coming home for a few more hours, Mandy asked August’s mom if they could come live with them so August can help her get through this because her boyfriend didn't do a good job. August right away said,
“Yes! Please. Mom can we. You can take the second master bedroom, please!”
“Ok fine! Yes, we can move in with them. But we have to make compromises on furniture,” explained Riley, August’s tomorrow.
“Ok!” Mandy said quickly.
“Yay!” both girls shouted repeatedly.
After Riley said yes both girls ran into her car and took everything out and hopped into the car to go to August’s house. Once they got there they went up to August room and started hugging everything and taking things apart. and they put it in the back of Riley's truck. The August room was small, they took everything out and got it to the truck in about 2 hours except for her bed, her desk, and her dresser.
Once we got back to Manny's house both girls immediately jumped out and opened the back end of the truck to start taking her clothes out. Mandy then called for her Butler page to come to take these clothes up to their new room and hang them in August’s new closet. Mandy and August took her bedding and her pants up to her room while Paige put all of the other stuff to sort through in the living room. Meanwhile, Riley went back with Paige once she was done. They went to Riley's old house to get her stuff and all of the bathroom stuff.
Then they can go back to unpack everything and put everything in her new room. Once they were done with that they went down to the kitchen to make dinner. They called for the girls but they were too busy making a fort out of their beds and the couch and adamin. Riley had made spaghetti and meatballs so she went up to August and Mandy’s room to tell them what they were having. After dinner, Riley and Paige baked a batch of brownies to bring to their new neighbors.
Reily knocked on the door and she heard a familiar voice while she asked the girls,
“Who lives here?”
Just as Mandy was going to answer, Carrie opened the door. Riley jumped back when she saw her and then said,
“Oh, I didn’t know you guys lived here!”
“Ya, we get that a lot. Come on in,” “Al get down here August, Riley, and Mandy are here!” Shouted Carrie.
“Ok! I am coming.” Al shouted back. Al ran down the stairs holding a file folder. Mandy guessed what was in it but he would have to be wrong because what she was about to hear would be life-changing.
“I think we found Emma’s killer but Carry over there thinks there is more to the story. We found a safe that we are trying to crack now and we think the murder weapon is in it. We also found the blue truck used in the subway drive-thru line. We questioned the two employes there and they said that your dad had just came in 5 minutes beforehand and bought out all of the stake and bacon and American cheese sandwiches so after Emma placed her stake bacon and American cheese order both employes went to the back and made some steak and bacon but while they were in the back, someone killers her and the blue truck was gone. There was also a silencer used so the employees did not hear a thing. But Carrie has a different theory that you are not going to like because it is about your dad,” Explained Al and Carrie.
“What? What, does my dad have to do with any of this.” Mandy said angrily.
“Well, Carrie thinks since we have identified the suspect as one of your dad's top employers, and he owns a blue truck that it was him at your dad’s order because Emma was poor and you were rich and you should be hanging out with richer friends like August, not Emma,” Al said silently because he was accusing Mandy’s dad of murder. This is not something you would like to do every day.
“This is an outrage. You have no idea what my dad is capable of. He could get you both fired and both moved out of this house and living on the streets with nothing with one phone call. If he killed Emma then why would he be so supportive of me not going to school? And why wouldn't he just kill both of us because he didn't want me hanging out with Emma anymore it would have caused me less pain? Why! Why!” Mandy yelled and stormed out. But when she reached the door of Al and Carrie’s house she thought to herself that makes sense so she went back and sat on the couch and said,
“That makes sense because if he killed me he would lose his most prized possession and by pretending to help me get through this he draws suspicion away from himself!” Mandy thought to herself how could I have been so blind when the answer was so obvious. Mandy thought about her mom, her badge that was hanging up in her room, and how if this would have happened before she died from that stupid homeless man. August wrapped her arms around her and brought her into a gentle hug.
“Wait that is it!” Mandy exclaimed.
“What is it?” yelled Carrie, Al, Riley, and August.
“You all know my mom was a police officer right and died?” Mandy said quickly.
“Ya, she was the best major crimes division officer we have ever had,” Carrie said.
“So what does that have to do with anything,” asked August.
“Everything!” Mandy ran out of Carrie and AL’s house and back to her own. She yelled for Paige to let everyone in and tell them to meet her in her room. Everyone eventually got to her room and saw she was staring at her mom's badge on her wall.
“What does your mom dying and her badge have to do with anything? Riley asked again.
“My mom died of a homeless man getting a gun and shooting her. What if my dad was afraid that Emma was just getting close to me so she could kill me because she was homeless and I am rich. Just like what happened to my mom!” explained Mandy.
“What are you guys talking about? Why were you talking about mom and why are Riley, August, Carrie, and Al here?” asked Mike.
“Well, Riley and August brought me home from school after I embarrassed myself in front of the whole grade and they are moving in with us. So Carrie and Al were helping them move in and we were just talking about moving mom’s badge to the other side of the room next to my bed or my desk instead of above the couch,” explained Mandy, lying about what they were doing. Mike stared at Mandy oddly, as if he knew she was lying but just walked away silently and nodded repeatedly as if saying ok, ok.
“Ok, so we need to take a picture of my mom’s badge, then we need to all meet up at Carrie and Al’s house after school, Then we need to find a way to bring my father in for questioning without drawing suspicion that we are on to him, so I think Carrie and Al should bring us all into questioning including Macy because she hated all three of us and you should question only Macy and my dad because we all know that it was none of us. So if he asked to be present during my interrogation then do it but just ask me easy questions so I can answer them easily.” Mandy said as she explained the plan.
The Next Morning
Mandy got dressed silently then woke up August and Riley to get ready then go next door while it was still dark so Mike didn’t wake up and know they were gone. Once they got over to Carrie and Al’s house, they talked about what questions they were going to go over and ask my dad today at the police station and what time would be best for my dad’s interrogation.
“He has a meeting at noon so I think we should do it then because who knows who he is meeting with and if we can keep him from meeting with the killer then he can’t kill me. Which I am pretty sure he is going to. He has pictures of me at school walking and that is why he nodded when he walked away yesterday because he didn’t want Riley and August to get in the way of his plan.” Mandy said quickly.
“That makes sense. I will bring you in for questioning at your 3rd hour and the same with August and Riley but his will still be at noon. So your third hour is 9:47 and I will ask for 9:30 then and you guys will miss all of 3rd hour.” Carrie said silently as if so no one could hear her.
Mandy, August, and Riley went back to their house and pretended to be asleep. Mandy and August fell into a small sleep but Riley just watched a movie, sure enough, Mike came into Mandy and August’s room as if 1 hour after they got back luckily they were only in a light sleep Mandy heard the door open and saw her dad with a syringe and luckily able to scream waking up August and making Riley run into her room.
Mike hid the syringe, but August had luckily had her phone on speed dial with Carrie and she heard the whole thing and they arrested Mike for etemptade murder and suspicion of murdering Emma or an acomlous to her murder. Mike got convicted within an hour and left Mandy at a loss for words but she had a feeling that her father would not stop so she asked Carrie and Al if they could all go into witness protection in Florida. They could go to the beach in Florida but not in Iowa. Carrie and Al could come to but just get different identities and still be cops and maybe Carrie could teach Mandy how to become a cop. Mandy, August, Riley, Carrie, and Al went to Florida.

My alarm went off like a fire alarm. I rolled over and grabbed my blankets, and I pulled them over my head. Then Eve got up out of her bed, and walked the 2 steps from my bed to hers, and started to shake my legs at the bottom of my bed. After about 3 minutes of that, she hit me in the face and said
“Turn the stupid alarm off Emmy!” Eve said sleepy but still with anger.
“ Fine!” I shouted back breaking free of my fort of blankets and turning it off.
Eve jumped back into her bed with her hello kitty blanket with her light pink comforter. Then Nana came into our room, and tip toed over to my bed in the right corner and woke up me up and said
“Time to get up” Nana whispered into my ear.
My eyes opened up with excitement, because I knew that today after school Nana, Katlyn, and I would be driving to the fair today. When I turned around Nana was gone. I jumped out of bed and ran into the hall, and to the kids bathroom that all five of us use. I brushed my teeth then ran back into our room to get my jeans and shirt. After I was all dressed I looked back and saw that it was 8:06am and Eve and Katlyn were still sleeping soundly. I walked down the stairs to find Evan on the stair in time out. He had an angry face and his arms were crossed. I went past him and went into the living room where Dad was holding Emeyson in the rocking chair, where Mom sat every night with Emeyson to get her to sleep. I ran into the kitchen where mom was making breakfast. She reached up to the cabinet to grab a plastic paw patrol bowl. I walked over to the island where mom was pouring some bo-berry into the bowl for Evan.
“Where is Nana?” I asked my looking around the down stairs.
“She's in the barn,” Mom said, rushing to grab the milk out of the fridge.
“Thanks Mom” I said as I ran through the living room behind the couch and out the front door onto the porch.
I ran over to the barn which was one of the first things you would see if you drive past a little farm.
As I got to the barn I saw Nana tacking up Penny. Penny was Nana's horse. She was kinda old and showy but, she still loved her more than anything. I ran to Rangers stal and led over the door. Ranger looked up from enjoying his hay. We made contact, I put my hand out to pet him. As I placed my hand on his head inside of rubbing his head he moved his head up and down as I kept my hand there. I turned around to see Nana and she was laughing so hard that she almost fell. After I finished tacting up Ranger, I led Ranger out to the arena. Penny and Nana followed. When we got out there, I lifted my leg up into the saddle and got up. As I sat up there I looked around and I saw Mom at the door with Evan on her hump.
“Emmy!” Mom yelled “GET OVER HERE NOW!” I rolled my eyes as I got off the Ranger
“ I’M COMING!” I yelled back.
“ I’ll untack Ranger,” Nana said with a smile.
“Thank you Nana,” I said, giving her a hug, then running out of the arena and over to the house.
As I opened the front door, Eve was waiting for me with my backpack in hand wearing a navy blue dress with her dirty blond hair in a braid, with Katlyn in a red crop top and jean shorts right beside her.
“Hurry up” Eve said as I grabbed my backpack from her
“Ok ok” I said rolling my eyes
Just then mom came from around the corner of the kitchen with 3 lunch boxes in hand. “Have a good day girls” mom said, giving Eve a kiss on the cheek. Then mom basically pushed us out to the door. As we all stood there on the front porch Katlyn looked at me,
“What?” I said with a confused look on my face
“ I dont know whats wrong with mom?” Katlyn said Looking worried
We all stepped off the porch and started up the long driveway. About 10 minutes later we were at the front of the driveway. Just then the bus pulled up, the door opened with a crack open.
Eve pushed me and Katlyn out of the way so she could get on first. Eve rushed up the stairs and sat in the first seat by the road nighbor Madison Cruizer, she was a small little 3rd grader with light blond hair and dark blue.
She was so sassy she made Eve look like an angel. Katlyn jumped up the stairs and walked to the 3rd back seat to the door in the back, Next to Jordan Smalls a senior with light brown hair and green eyes, that was playing Katyln to think they were a couple.
At last I got on the noisey bus with kids throwing paper and kids shouting and yelling at the top of their lungs. I found a seat in the middle of the bus by my friend Hannah Marcher. She sat in the bus seat reading a book, Her Black hair was pulled into a french braid and she was wearing a purple dress with a light blue bow.
“Hi” I said kinda quiet she looked up at me with a smile on her face “Hi Emmy” She said back
I sat down next to her and asked “ Whatcha readen?”
“The first Harry Potter” She said flipping to the cover and point to Harry Potter,
Hannah had always loved to read any kind of fairy tale or anything with magic. We talked for about ten minutes until we stopped at my least favorite human on the planet's house, Kayla Marte. My personal bully! The doors opened and Kayla walked up the stairs, it felt like it was in slow motion, Then her eyes locked and she gave me a smile of evil. She walked back to where I was sitting with Hannah and sat right across from us.
“How's it going losers?” She said to us.
“ We’re not losers!” Hannah said with a voice crack.
“You talk?” Kayla said as she leaned over and pushed Me in the arm.
It hurt so bad and maybe another day, I would have said something back to her, but not today,I didn't say anything. Kayla laughed for a few minutes, then she got up and walked back to the back seats of the bus where her new friends sat. Hannah and I both sat in silence for the rest of the bus ride. I finally got off the bus and speed walked to the middle school.
I got to my locker and I opened it and found a letter at the bottom of my locker by my math notebooks. Little did I know that that would be the last straw to make me go off later in life. It was from Kayla and all it said on the paper was LOSER! My eyes got watery as I smashed it and threw it on the ground. The whole day I thought about the note. The clock striked 3:00 the bell rang and everyone sped out the door. I calmly walked to the front door where Nana and Mom were parked, Mom was in the minivan and Nana was in her grey truck. I looked in the front seat and saw Katlyn and Eve already in the van with mom. So I walked over to the passenger seat door and got in with Nana. I got in and looked in the back seat, there was Ethen in the back in his car seat sleeping.
“How was school Peanut?” Nana asked as she started her truck
“Okay,” I said, putting my backpack on the floor.
Then I remembered it was friday and the state fair was this weekend! As we drove home I started to think about the fair and got nervous. After 5 minutes we were home.
I jumped out of the truck and ran over to the barn, Nana was already getting to the trailer hooked on to her truck. I started putting braids in Rangers white and black main and tail. Then Katylen walked into the barn to get Lucky and put him in the trailer too. Then she tried for 5 minutes to get Lucky in the trailer, finally Nana walked over and put him in the trailer for her. I put on Ranger's bright blue halter and walked him into the trailer.
“Go get your bag for the show” Nana said as she shut the barn door.
“What bag?” I asked about closing the trailer door.
“Your bag for the fair” Nana said with a kind of mean tone “I told you to pack a bag 2 days ago!”
“WELL I HAVE BEEN BUSY WITH SCHOOL!” I yelled I didn't like yelling at Nana but she just didn't get that I had four tests this week and still had to train for the fair. It was a lot of stress plus I had to do Kayla's homework for her, or else she would punch me even harder, but I could never tell Nana about that, never.
I started to run to the house, As I got up to the porch and opened the front door I started to regret yelling at Nana. I saw a red shirt that looked like my older brother. Ethens shirt that he had gotten from me for his birthday. The tall guy turned around and it was Ethen. Ethen was the last person I wanted to see right now.
Then I thought of July 4th,1995, It was the fourth of July every year I looked forward to me and Ethens tradition going on a ride to a tall hill about 1 hour away. It was one of my favorite times of the year because it was time that I just got with Ethen. He was the only one I could talk to about Kayla, he was the only one that understood me.
I ran down the stairs to the downstairs basement. It was Ethan's room at the time then Nana moved in and that became her bedroom. I knocked on his door, there was no answer so knocked again thinking maybe he had his headphones on. There was no answer yet again so I just opened the door to find Ethens room was empty, all of his things were gone.
That was why I didn't need to see Ethen. I ran up the stairs without looking at Ethen. I got to my room and grabbed my old backpack and put in two shirts, pants, pajamas. Then there was a knock on the door.
“COME IN!” I yelled as I zipped up my backpack.
The door opened and it was Nana. She opened the the door slowly,
“Are you ok?” Nana said sitting down on the my bed
“Yes, I’m FINE!” I said with a angry tone in my voice
Nana took a big breath and said “Its ok if you don't want to talk about it”
“It's just I can't even go to school and be happy and I can't be happy at home either,” I said interrupting her, ”everything is about Katlyn and Eve because they all have someone at school to talk to. Eve has Madison and Katlyn has a huge group of friends. I have known no one. Ethen my best friend is the whole world and only friends left me.” I said with tears in my eyes.
“We have to get going, can we talk about this later Em” Nana said getting up from my bed and walking over to the door
“Sure” I said holding back my tears
Nana walked out the door, I finished packing clothes for the fair. I got up and up my backpack on and walked out the door and down the stairs and into the living room. Then I saw Ethen sitting on the couch,
Ethen stood up and walked around the couch “Hey Em, can we talk,”
“No” I said running front door
I ran out the door and over to Nana’s truck where Katlyn was riding in the back. I walked around the truck and opened the passenger seat door. I jumped in the truck, Nana started the truck and we drove off. As I looked out the window I saw the summer sun setting in the distance, as the sun went down my eyes closed with it. About 1 hour later I woke up, and the sky was pitch black. The only light was from the truck light. Then in the far distance I saw lights, it was from a huge horse barn. Then I remembered that the new barn that was built on the fairgrounds last year. That was the fair! About 5 minutes later we pulled into the driveway of the fairgrounds.
Nana parked in a spot by the barn, I looked behind to see Katlyn was sitting. She was sleeping with her phone on her chest, her hair messed up in knots. Nana looked back at her too.
“Lets just let her sleep Em” Nana said with a smile
“Ok” I nodded opening the door
I got out and walked to the front of the truck where Nana was waiting for me.
“It's almost 10:00,” Nana said looking at her phone “Let's put the horse in some stalls then we can crash in the truck,”
“Ok” I said
About half an hour later we were in the truck, the horses were in stalls and we were so tired.
The next day I woke up to the sun shining right down on my face. Nana was alright up and in the barn. I grabbed some clothes from my backpack and ran to the trailer to change. After I had my jeans and mint green T-shirt on I walked to the Barn. As I walked into the barn there were so many people and horses. Then I saw Nana waving at me from one of the stalls, the stall that we put Ranger in last night. As I ran over to Nana and gave me a hug
“Morning Nana” I said pulling back from our hug
“Gooding Morning Em” I said looking over into the stall to see that Ranger was eating his hay that Nana had probably given him this morning before I had gotten up.
Just then I heard Katlyn breath behind me, She walked in between me and Nana.
About 4 hour later, I was getting ready in the back of the trailer. As I buttoned my dark blue show shirt, I started to think what if someone I didn't like was in the crowd, Savannah maybe Ethen or maybe Kayla. I skipped my helmet on. I jumped out of the trailer and walked into the barn to Track up Ranger. Then in front of the stalls I saw a familiar face, it was Kayla.
“You're in the Fair?” Kayla asked me with a surprised look on her face
“Yep” I nodded
“I wish you good luck” she said
“Thank you,” I replied with a smile
“Oh and this,” Kayla said I saw her make a fist, and punched me in the nose.
The second she punched me, blood poured out of my nose like a river. You know that small second, where you see the blood but the pain has quite hit you yet that was now. I fell to the ground in tears, screaming.
In the distance I saw someone running towards me, but I couldn't see the whole person in the distance got clearer and clearer. As Kayla ran away I could see red marks on the back of her legs and arms, but maybe that was just my crazy mind playing tricks on me. Then the person that was running towards me, it was so clear it was Kayla's dad. His bald head was red along with his faceI knew it was him because he had come to get Kayla from school everyday. And he had a small little white smart car that everyone made fun of in the car line.
As he ran up to her Kayla's face was filled with fear as he smacked her right in the face. As she fell tears began pouring out of her eyes. Her dad kicked her as hard as he could agased one of the stalls. He picked her up and put her in his small little white car. Kayla's dad opened the door and sat her in the front seat then we walked around the car and got in the car. I looked away and turned to Ranger. I felt the ground to find my glasses, I found them in a pile of hay about 2 feet from me.
I put my glasses back on. They were a little bent but they still worked. I knew that mom would have freaked out if they would have been broken. I looked back to seeKayla's dad open the car door and push her out. She landed on her side in tears. Then the small car took off like a rocket. I got up and looked around. Then I saw Ranger. I sucked up my tears and went into Rangers stall to tack him up for the show.
After I finished tacking up Ranger and walked him out of the huge red barn, and over to the brand new arena that was built about 1 year ago after the last school fair. As I walked to the arena, I saw Kayla getting up from the gavel with a bloody nose and purple bruises all over her arms and legs.
I rolled my eyes and walked to the arena with a thought in my head. The only thing I could think is, what just happened? I was still in shock.
After about 10 minutes I was in the gate ready to ride, as I stepped in the strup and lefted myself over. I began to think to think about what was actually happening. I was at the state fair!! The announcer said my name and the gate opened, and my eyes were set on that first barrel. I made a small circle into an elope. I kicked and he went full speed to that first barrel as we approached the barrel, I thought of what happened with Kayla and her dad. Then I remember that today wasn't about Kayla or her dad or even Katlyn. No it was about me. As I looked forward I saw that we were going to hit the barrel perfectly. As Ranger made the turn, I did a quick pet on his neck then we speeded to the second barrel. I had never gone this fast before, then I had a weird feeling in my stomach. We went around the second barrel like a bolt of lightning. As we went on to the very last barrel. We made the best turn possible turn, then I kicked and he went faster than fast as we got back to the gate. I smiled the biggest smile possessable. I looked around and up at the stands, I saw Kayla in the front row clapping with a smile. Nana had a face of excitement,
“You did it Emmy!” Nana said with a huge smile
“Thank you Nana” I said stepping off Ranger
I walked in front of a Ranger and gave him a big fat kiss on his head. I looked over at Nana, and hugged her. We waited for the announcer to say “IT THIRD PLACE…...ARIA WALLS '' I closed my eyes and held onto Ranger. “IN SECOND PLACE…….SUMMER SIMON”. We all waited for about 2 minutes, I one wish I wanted to get something because I practiced all year just for this moment. “AND IN FIRST PLACE……………. EMMY GREY” I looked at Nana and jumped into her arms with tears coming down from my face and onto Nana's sweater. I pulled away from Nana and turned around and I saw Mom, Dad, Katlyn, Eve, Evan, Emerson, and Ethen. After I got hugs from everyone I went up and got my ribbon. I walked back to my family, and got more hugs from every but not from Ethene.
2 days later it was 9:34am, I was at school by my locker when Kayla came up to me.
“Hey I saw you at the state fair” Kayla said looking at her broken down sneakers
“Yeah what about it?” I asked shutting the locker
“So I was thinking maybe we should be friend again” Kayla asked looking up at me
“No no NO!” I said “After all the crap you have put me through, I will never be friends with you!” I yelled
“But Emmy come on” she said with a crying voice
“No LOSER” I said walking over to where Hannah was waiting for me by the door way
I thought of that day over and over again, After school I saw Kayla get off the bus and walk over to her house, where her dad was waiting for her on the porch. I looked out the bus window and looked at her dark blue shirt with a heart on the front , her dad pointed to the door. Kayla walked in with her head down. Her dad followed her into the house. That was the last time anyone would ever see her for the next 24 years.
In the year 2020 a stay at home mom was living in a small house by the road with her family of 4. She was doing some work in her garden, she had been working on digging a hole for a tree in the backyard for about 2 days. As she came to the end of her digging she saw something that looked like a finger. She decided to keep on digging to find out what it was. After 20 minutes she had uncovered an arm. But it was still connected to something, so she keeped digging. As sweat ran down her forehead with fear she began to think about how her husband would get home soon. So she would have to hurry, after 30 minutes of digging she had uncovered 2 arms and 2 legs but there was no neck and no head and it had been cut off. But there was something weird about the body. It had a dark blue shirt with a heart on the front. The shirt had turned black over time but you could still see the heart. She heard the back door open. It was her husband.
She turned around and looked him in the eyes, she could hardly hold back the tears. He was wearing a white button up shirt with a red tie. His bald head and face were red from a hard day's work.
“We need to talk” she said as the shovel dropped out of her heads and on the the green grass

We were never friends. I was always forced to hang out with her because she was my best friend’s girlfriend. Levi is my best friend, and has been since we were six and he saved me from falling off of the slide. Levi was always there for me, but now he has a girlfriend and everything is all about her. Her name is Chloe and she is anything but nice. I think that the main reason Levi likes her is because she’s pretty. Also the fact that Chloe isn’t a total jerk when Levi is with her. Anyways a few days ago my mother decided that it would be a good idea to embarrass me and throw a christmas party for about three fourths of people in my grade. That is most of the students, and that means that she invited Chloe. You may be thinking, “Why would your mom do that to you? Doesn’t she know that you two are enemies?” Well, she does know that Chloe is the meanest person to ever live, but she knew that if we invited Levi and not Chloe then she would come anyways. I mean I love Levi. He’s like my brother but his choice in which girls to date is not very good.
“Dylan!!!!” My mom yells from the living room. “Where are you??? I need you to help me decorate for the party!!!!” She does realize I'm in the next room and not the next country right?
“I’m right here mom.” As soon as i say this my mom jumps because i guess i scared her. She hands me some mistletoe. I ask her if she knows that this is a party for 16 year olds so there will probably be kissing anyways. She responded with,
“If there is going to be kissing we can at least look like we’re being festive!” I just rolled my eyes and walked into the kitchen. She had already decorated in there. Most of the colors were white and red. There was a little green but I think she was going for a candy cane theme. After I went to the cabinet and got a couple oreo’s to eat I walked back into the living room. Me and my mom spent the rest of the day decorating and before I knew it it was the next day and almost time for the party. The party started at five thirty and it was about five o’ clock. I really had nothing to do because we had done all the preparation yesterday. I decided that I would call Levi and talk to him for a while. I went to my contacts on my phone and found his name. Then I tried to call him but it just kept ringing.
“Hey! I can’t come to the phone right now because I'm probably hanging out with Chloe but leave a message!” is what my phone said when it finally stopped ringing. He was always with Chloe if he wasn’t with me. Even sometimes when he was with me. I spent the next thirty minutes looking at pictures of me and Levi before Chloe came into his life. But then I hear “knock! knock!” Then my mom yells to me
“Dylan! Your friends are here!” thinking it’s Levi and Chloe i yell that only one of them is my friend. Then I start to make my way down the stairs and I see that they are just two random people from my class. Then one looks me straight in the eye and says
“Which one of us is your friend?” Embarrassed, I look at both of them.
“Sorry i thought you were someone else…” I told them. People started coming and by five forty our living room and kitchen were full of people. At exactly five forty seven Chloe walked into my house and stood next to our couch because sitting on it would ruin her dress. I was so distracted by Chloe actually showing up and insulting our house that I didn't even realize Levi wasn’t with her. I was worried that something had happened to him and the later it got the more worried I was. Finally I was just desperate enough to ask Chloe what happened to Levi.
“Hey Chloe! How’s your night going? Actually I don't really care. Why isn’t Levi here???” I ask her as she goes to get a drink.
“Hello Dylan. My night is going good except for your-” she starts to respond before i interrupt her.
“Where. Is. Levi.” I asked, hoping for a quick answer.
“Well you’re rude. Levi is probably not here because I broke up with him. He was too nice to people all the time and so are you. You should-” i cut her off again i didn’t need her criticism. I needed to help my best friend. I sent him a text that said
“I heard Chloe broke up with you. I’m sorry man but she wasn’t good enough for you anyways.” Then I looked up and realized that I was right under the mistletoe. I told someone to go get Chloe and tell her to come here. Then I went and found Levi’s sister Layla. I had a plan to make Chloe feel sorry for what she had done to Levi. Chloe finally came to where i was standing and when she noticed we were under the mistletoe she just stared at me.
“You know what this means don’t you?” I said to her.
“We have to kiss? You’re sorta cute i guess… but we are not going to be boyfriend and girlfriend!” she responds quickly.
“I wanted to do something else actually but i’m not allowed to hit a girl. However I found a solution.”
“And what is that? Are you going to kiss me for revenge on your friend? Sounds like you’re making it worse for him.” She says this as snooty as possible.
“Actually… LAYLA!!!” I yell as loud as possible so people will look at us. Layla takes her hand back and swings it forward as hard as she can, slapping Chloe in the face. Chloe screams and runs through the crowd of people to get out of our house. By this point my mom was yelling at me and Layla. She grabbed our hands and dragged us upstairs. She started to yell again but then I started talking and she stopped yelling to listen. I explained the whole deal with Levi and my mom said
“Oh. Well i don't want this to be how you deal with problems in the future but it’s alright this one time.” After that I called Levi and told him that Chloe left so he should come to the party and we’d forget about her. He got there a little later and we enjoyed ourselves. I guess you could call this mistletoe gone wrong. Or right. You know whatever way you look at it.

I am ready for the first day of 8th grade. I am going to hang out with my bff Sally. I have known Sally since we were two. Most of the time we are at her house, all she talks about is her orange fish, Fred.
My name is Starlight and I was feeling ready for the first day of school until I found out I was going to Sally’s house after school. I was planning on hanging out with my boyfriend Donovan tonight, but instead I get to listen to Sally talk about Fred. When I get to school I guess I will have to tell Donavan I can’t hang out with him. I usually call him Don. Also, I wonder if my mom is going to send my sister Maple to Sally’s house with me. I wonder who’s house Maple is going to. I bet she is going to April’s house. They have been friends since they were one. She is five, so it has been four years since they met for the first time and became friends. April is five and I am her babysitter. My mom never really sends us to other people’s houses and never has surprises except for when she told us she was pregnant with our brother.
“My school day starts now,” I said as I got out of bed and chose what I was going to wear for the day. I chose my flower romper that has pretty pastel flowers. Today I have my first volleyball practice. At first I was worried, but I am super good. Last year I was an all star on the A team. I have a quote that my grandpa made because he was not very good at sports and thought that I would be bad too. He said that when you try hard and don’t succeed, you keep trying until you get it right. My grandpa is the Mayor of the city. Anyway, the coach is named Mrs. Bluetooth and she loves to listen to music with her bluetooth speaker during practice. I love Mrs. Bluetooth! Last year we had a good relationship. My mom and her were dorm buddies in college and are still friends now. Mrs. Bluetooth is married to my dad’s brother, Mike.
Finally school is over, I think gratefully in my head. My friends and I went to get 2 mega ice cream sundaes. Donavan and I will share and Sally and Brandon will share. The whole world was forgotten and I was carried away by the thought, and then Donavan yelled SQUIRREL! Which made me and Jonah jump. Jonah is the ice cream shop owner's dog. When we were done eating we left. We went back to Sally’s and saw Fred, and as I expected the most exciting part was leaving her room and playing the Wii. Sally and I beat the boys in a competitive game of “Mario Kart.”
Then Sally whispered to me “ Can you and Don give Brandon and I some time to play a one on one game?”
Donavan and I went into her backyard and sat on the swing that hangs from a really shady tree. Sally and Brandon asked for some alone time and since we couldn’t leave we came outside to hang out. The sun was setting and we were still waiting for my mom to come pick us up and take us to my house. Then my mom called and said that all four of us were going to have a sleepover. My friends asked me what I wanted more than anything and I said Sugarplum. We decided to be weird and call Burger King and ask for 7 milkshakes. In the next hour we finished 4 of the milkshakes. We were then waiting for my mom to bring Maple over. My mom brought over Maple since she can’t spend the night somewhere without me or are parents, because she is only 5.
The next morning we went to school and Sally’s mom took all of us, including Maple. It was such a long day and I was so tired. My mom called the school and told them that Tess and her mom were taking me home. Little did I know, that at lunch time I would be leaving. Now at this time, I thought maybe my mom was having Oliver, but she wasn’t. Instead me and Jen ( Tess’s mom ) were on our way to the ER. Apparently Maple fell down 5 concrete stairs. She broke, dislocated 5 bones, needed immediate help, and immediate surgery. Luckily, my grandparents were there to drive her to the ER. I really wish that when she got home, there would be a pet waiting for her. I got motivated, and told Jen to stop at a PetSmart really fast, so we could get her a turtle, and Jen agreed.
We got her a turtle named Harper. Harper was a brownish green color and was kind. Luckily he is not a Snapping turtle. When we got to the ER with Harper, Maple was screaming in pain as they put the IV in her arm to give her the pain medication. My whole family has a huge phobia of needles, from my great great grandpa, to Maple. I felt so bad, that to calm her down I sat with her and told her jokes. I looked down into her 5 year old hazel eyes, and saw how scared she was. So I gave her Harper. She got a little happier, but she was still in pain because the medicine had not started working yet. At this point I knew it was going to be a long 6 months.
When I got to my house I was alone for an hour while my grandma went shopping for food at 9:00 pm. She went to get me Bbops because she knows it’s the only thing that will make me feel better. While she was gone, all I did was cry till I was dehydrated because all the water in my body had been cried out. I also talked to Donavan. He asked if I wanted to come over to watch a movie with him. I said yes, and went over to his house. When I got there, my dad was there and I was overwhelmed with things. He had come home to see Maple at the hospital and also to see me. I was so happy that my dad and Donavan set this up. I was just filled with grace and hope that Maple would get better. My dad and I went down the stairs, and watched a movie with Donavan and his dad. My dad is in the Military. He came home from Afghanistan. It was really hard when he was gone and it is great to have him back again.
The next day I had school, the teachers gave me flowers for Maple and my dad. We are so lucky to go to a school as great as North Polk in Iowa. The next day Maple started learning how to walk after surgery. We all cheered her on knowing that she would be able to push through and do it. She took 5 steps in all and we were so proud. She broke both legs and both arms and dislocated both knee caps and both shoulders. We cheered so loud that all the way down the hall someone yelled who walked, and we all yelled back, Maple did. For several days she is going to practice walking till she gets it by herself. She has a wheelchair. The next day she got released and it was a moment we will all remember.
Today is a day that we will all treasure and remember. My mom was about to have her baby and we were so excited. I am ready to have a new family member. Our baby brother Oliver was being born. Oliver is 6 pounds, 12 inches. He is super cute and actually has a little hair. His hair is brown. Maple got to meet him after me and was so excited. She is really cute when she gets excited! The next day we all skipped school and stayed home with Oliver or Ollie for short. We had a great day and had a lot of family time. It was the first time we had all looked happy at the same time. My dad was home when Ollie was born and that’s all that mattered. Dad goes back too Apfiganistan soon, but while he is here we are going to watch all of his films. His team in the military records all of the things they do and he is the sargent/ leader so he gets to keep them all.
Today after school was over for my friends, Mrs. Bluetooth and my uncle came over. I was excited because I haven’t seen my cousins in so long. Brandon and Sky are so much taller now. Brandon is 7 and Sky is 2. My dad is related to my uncle because they have the same mom, but they have different dads which is why they have different last names. My mom teaches with Aunt Kristy ( Mrs. Bluetooth ). I was excited when I found out three days into volleyball that my mom was one of the coaches starting after she had Ollie. I was ready to show her what I could do. Soon I was hoping that we would get a puppy or a pet. I was hoping if my team could make it to the championship we could get a puppy. I was wondering how I would convince my mom, dad, and family to let us get a pet. I would like a dog. The next day I had my first semi finals, we won all the games we played after that. We are on our way to the championships in Kansas City. My whole A team goes to Kansas City.
Championship Game
“Today is championship day”, I say out loud. The day where I play setter and win the game. Our team has 8 players and we run a six - two. A six - two is when you have one setter, two outside hitters, two middle blockers, and one right side. I am a setter, I set with Sarah my best friend that I met at volleyball. We are going to win. The only team we have to beat is Winterset. Winterset runs right side setter, which means that they don’t have a specific setter. The setter rotates and the person in the right front is the setter every time. When we got to Kansas City the first thing we did is go to the gymnasium, and we also stopped at the concession stand to get food. When I got to the gym and started practicing I saw my mom, and something else sitting on the bench where the coaches sit. She had Ollie and a PUPPY! She had gotten me and my team a support animal for the day and we were all so excited. We practiced as hard as we could practice for the puppy. For the day we called the puppy Hope. We started playing and we won the first match, but lost the second. My mom took a time out and all she said during the time out was “pet Hope and win this last match and this tournament for Hope, and for your selves.”
BEEP, BEEP, BEEP.
"WE WON” the team cheered.
That’s when me and Maple found out that my mom bought Hope for me and Maple. She bought Hope for us because she is proud of us. She is proud of Maple because of how brave she was when she got super hurt and she is proud of me because I tried my best and helped my team make it to nationals. We took Hope to the hotel and we celebrated with the team. When we got to Scoop A Loop the ice cream place my mom told me a surprise and gave me my last surprise. The one she told me was that I finally get my own room when we get to the house. The last surprise she gave me was a Guinea Pig named Lilly. What I forgot to mention is Maple got a puppy and I got a different puppy, and Maple got a Guinea Pig and I got a Guinea Pig.
My 8th grade year was rough but kind of ended good. My dad passed away of Cancer and we got our pets. Sally stopped talking about fred. As soon as I know it it will be the first day of ninth grade.

“Mom, I think something’s wrong with Matt,” I had yelled up the stairs. That’s the day everything changed.
Matt is my younger brother, so when I found him breathing heavily, eyes wide open, and not speaking I got really scared. Him not speaking is what really got my family concerned. Matt is super talkative and loves being in charge, but when I found him on the floor of his bedroom doing nothing, I was scared for him.
Matt has a heart condition and anxiety, but otherwise is a normal kid. Now if your 6 year old brother had a minor heart attack what would you do.
Well I started towards him my head pounding. I ran over and picked him up. I carried him to the stairs and that’s when I yelled to Mom. We had to rush him to the hospital and sadly for us it was noon and so there were lots of traffic jams. If we could have called an ambulance we would have, but there was no time since we live in the country. The nearest town, were my school is, is half and hour away.
We brought him to the emergency room and told them his condition. I apparently wasn’t allowed in the emergency room since I’m not 18 yet. The whole 3 days he was in there I cried my eyes out and prayed for him.
When he came out he said, “Sisy!!!” he bear-hugged me so hard and I bear-hugged him back.
“Matt, you’re okay!” I had yelled.
He said, In one week I can go to school!” I was so excited for him. We walked out of the bright blue, hospital doors hand in hand.
It’s the night before Matt goes back to school and he is so nervous. His anxiety is really high right now.
He runs to the bathroom and throws up. He’s crying, and sweating and throwing up just doesn’t help at all. I get his waterbottle and help him slowly drink it. He says that his head feels hot, so I get the thermometer and check his temperature. It’s somewhat high, but I’m not too worried. I put my hand on his head, and even I can feel that it’s pounding.
“Take deep breaths,” I say. He takes deep breaths, but still he’s sweating like crazy. I run towards the freezer. I grab an ice pack for him and put him in bed.
The next morning he says that he’s sick, but we all know he’s lying.
“I’m really sick,” He insists.
“What part of you doesn’t feel well?” Mom asks him.
“Um my tummy hurts?” He says, but he says it like a question.
“We can give you tylenol, but you are going to school, NO exceptions.” Mom says, emphasising no.. After breakfast we hear the bus coming, so we stand up, grab our bags, put our shoes on, and run to the door. Mom kisses our foreheads and wishes Matt good luck.
We hop on the bus and Zoe says, “Hey Matt, hey Riley” Zoe and I are BFFs.
“Hi Zoe,” I say as we sit down. Matt is in the middle and I’m on the edge. We chat all the way to school. When we get to school I walk with Matt all the way to his classroom door.
“Tell me everything that happens, okay?” I say.
“Okay,” He says, hugging me hard. He walks into his classroom with his head down. I’m worried about him, but he’s stronger than anyone else I know.

When you think of the perfect murder you would think of adults who have devoted their entire lives to get to that one perfect murder. But who would’ve guessed that it would have been a small-town girl who was always praised for all of her talents and skills. It seems as if no one could have suspected her or maybe some people did but no one listened.
But I mean who would? She is the prettiest, most athletic and smart girl in her entire high school. You would think that would be even a little bit suspicious, right?
But yet no one even blinked twice when thinking that it could have been Miss Bella Elizabeth Beamond, which makes it the perfect murder.
Young Bella, only fifteen years old, came into that small town and blew everyone's mind. She played in all the sports provided at her school. But the preferably sports that were mostly just played by females. She played Volleyball, Basketball, Soccer, tennis, golf, and swim. She was the star of all the teams, no one could beat her from her school or any other school.
Bella also participated in school decathlons. She wasn’t as good in those but she wasn’t bad either. People in her town wondered how she did all of it, with all of the practices and tests and just everything in general. The truth was that she couldn't.
It was either you go to this practice and then miss another one but then you would have to make up for it. But Bella could never admit that because she loved all the sports she did and the popularity that came with it.
Bella, even though no one realized it was very lonely and had no real friends like everyone else. There were definitely people who wanted to be her friend but not for her personality but because she was popular and was super cool. Bella had a lot of fake friends that didn’t really care about her and just wanted to always be around her for the guys who were obsessed with her so that they might start to like them. But that never happened so some of them gave up and then more followed. Bella probably had a new set of “friends” every week. Which is sort of depressing and disrespectful. Bella always told herself, “I wish that I could get some real friends” But she didn’t want the popularity to go away so she just had to live with it.
The first week of school was always so easy because all you would do was introduce yourself even though everyone already knew who I was. “Even if you're only a sophomore, people already know your name. Even those cute seniors over there.” Bella’s “best friend,” said to her right before the bell rang to go to first period.
Bella always dreaded her first class because it was her weakest, she had okay grades in it but she just didn’t like the concept of the class. Of course that class was Math. “Why would I ever need to use any of the stuff learned in math when she graduated and was living in the real world where no one uses algorithms and strategies.”
People use phones because they are much simpler and who would carry a pencil and a piece of paper around wherever they go. Bella said to herself.
When she walked into the class she saw just as predicted the nerds in the front of the room, the jocks in the back right corner, the dumbs in the back left corner and her people (popular people) in the middle.
Everyone stared at her as she walked in, grateful to be in her presence. “I was the queen and these are my people.” Bella complimented herself knowing that twenty more compliments were going to be given to her in the next five or six minutes.
Bella’s teachers did not like Bella very much because they know that Bella acts like she is really smart and all and she is the most perfect person. But they know that underneath all that acting it is really just a nervous know-it-all that needs other peoples attention and acceptance to go on with the day.
The class started and in a blink of an eye it finished. “On to the next class, who’s going to carry my bags?” Bella asked the class. All the Jocks and the rest of the popular girls rushed up to the front of the class where Bella was standing.
They all yelled “I’ll do it! I’ll do it!” But Bella didn't want someone who could easily carry her bags. No, she wanted someone to make fun of because they were weak. So she picked a little guy in the back who wasn’t a nerd, but definitely not a jock. She called him but he didn’t look up, she called him again and he finally replied but he didn’t look at her.
He said “I have a name you know so unless you say it I don’t know how you're going to get your bags to your next class.” The rest of the class was shocked that someone said something back to Bella.
Bella was the most shocked, no one had ever talked to her like that. She was normally the bully. So Bella carried her bags herself. It took her five minutes to get to her next class because her bags were heavy with all of her stuff, she didn’t know where her class was since pretty much everyone else knew her schedule so why would she bother learning it if someone else was just going to lead her to it.
The day went by as usual, nothing interesting happened. Well not that Bella hadn’t already known about. But something strange did happen that day but no one knew about it. Bella’s math and science teacher came up to her right after the bell saying that the day was over and all the students could go home. Mrs. Chekenbac and Mr. Fernsby came up to Bella and told her that she had been failing the past few quizzes which meant that she couldn’t play sports. “ But they will lose without me,” Bella told them.
“We understand that they might not do as well, but that doesn’t mean that you can just throw away your grades.” Mr. Fernsby replied.
Bella stomped away feeling disappointed and hurt. “How could they do this to me?” she said to Meredith over her new phone when she got home. All Bella could think about that night was how she was going to hide it at school.
Later that night Bella received an email anonymously saying that bright colors and sequence leggings were back in. Bella was super excited to have these back in because she hadn’t worn these since she was a kid.
The next day at school everyone was staring at her. But not in the way she was used to, it was a weird judgy feeling. She checked to make sure her outfit matched, if her makeup had smeared, but she just couldn’t find anything wrong.
But then she realized that Meredith had probably told everyone about my grades and the sports teams. Bella ran to the bathroom crying, pushing and shoving people out of the way. When she was in the bathroom all she could think about were the people laughing and making fun of her for the rest of her high school life.
When she didn’t hear anything in the halls she finally left the bathroom thinking about ditching school because there was no way she could go into any of her classes with everyone knowing her secret.
Right as she was about to leave through the front door of the school she saw something out of the corner of her eye. She said, “Who’s there, show yourself!”
“ It’s just the guy with no name trying to figure out how miss perfect got kicked off the sports teams.”
“Just so that you will not figure it out, I am only going to say this.” Bella said as she put her hands on her hips with a glare on her face thinking that she accomplished something.
‘Well then it’s a good thing I already know. Because if I hadn’t I probably would not have ever found out why. But thank goodness I was there when your teachers came up to you and told you thought you were getting kicked off.”
Bella stood there in shock, how could he tell everyone about that. Bella’s shock turned to confusion, then the confusion turned to anger. “HOW COULD YOU, MY REPUTATION IS RUINED BECAUSE OF YOU!!!!!!” While Bella was yelling all that boy could do was grin, and laugh then laugh even harder, until he thought he was going to pass out from the lack of air he was getting because he was laughing so hard. All Bella could do was sulk and start to cry.
“See how it feels to be humiliated” Said the boy standing across from her.
“ I have never been humiliated in my entire life, and then this happens and what am I supposed to do. I am going to be known as the girl who got bad grades so she got kicked off the athletic teams.”
“Trust me it blows over, people won’t even remember what happened in a few weeks because someone else embarrassed themselves even more.”
“How do you know? I have never seen you before, what’s your name anyway?” Bella said, now overwhelmed with questions.
“ It's Winstin, but everyone calls me win because I win at everything I do.” Winstin said, smirking as if he was the coolest person in the world. (which he definitely wasn’t)
“ When you say everyone do you mean your parents because I have never seen or even heard of you, ever.” Bella said in a very bratty yet curious voice.
“ Ya, haven’t you noticed I don’t have a lot of friends. But that comes in handy when all you do is blackmail people.” Win said very quietly making sure no other student or teacher heard him. “YOU BLACKMAIL PEOPLE!!!” Bella yelled freaking out and thinking about what could happen next. “SHUSH!!” Win said loudly, kinda defeating the point of the word. “Today really isn’t the best day to get caught for four years of blackmailing the same people, especially when I’ve just uncovered a new juicy story about miss perfect over here.” Win said in a very devious way that made Bella very uncomfortable. For the next couple of hours Win and Bella negotiated on how to keep it a secret that Bella was kicked off the athletic teams but yet Win still would get something out of it. But Bella still had one question “ If you haven't told anybody about what happened last night, then why was everybody staring weirdly at me today?”
“ Oh about that, that was my bad. You know that email that you anonymously got this morning saying that a lot of glitter and unique colors were back in, ya that was me.” So everyone was just very surprised and weirded out that you were wearing clothes that are not in because you are the fashionista for our school. But I’m sure that by tomorrow everybody will be wearing unicorn sparkle shirts, and those weird leggings where if you brush down one side it is one color, and if you go the opposite way it turns into a new color,” Bella chuckled and they continued on with their negotiation.
When the huge grandfather clock they had in their school struck nine-o'clock Bella and Win had finally come to a conclusion that to keep Bella's secret a secret she would have to pretend to be Win's girlfriend and in return he would “tutor” her and help her get her grades back up. But of course Win wasn’t actually going to tutor Bella because, if she got better then she would be able to join the athletic teams again and his plan of blackmailing her would be ruined. So Bella personally thought that she got the good side of this plan but Win also thought that he got the good side.
But when you really think about it, they are just two teenagers that have nothing to do with their lives except blackmail each other and be so desperate that you have to blackmail someone into dating you. So their lives are pretty sad but they are still filled with drama and adventure so they're worth listening about.
The next few weeks had been going by pretty quickly but Bella every morning would wake up in fear of that maybe just maybe Win had told everyone her secret but she was always reassured that he didn’t because they practically spent the whole day together. You know, being a fake girlfriend and boyfriend.
People wondered how Bella Beamond got stuck with Winstin Smith. Because Bella was so perfect and Win was just somehow always just there. To make people not get super suspicious of why Bella wasn’t able to play she faked a injury of a really bad sprain so it was just another excuse for Win to be by her to “help” her with her things but it was also so that he could make sure that she didn't rat on him and go to a teacher exposing him for all the times he has blackmailed people. But Bella never did because she knew that if she did or had ratted on him he would expose her to the entire school and her reputation would be ruined as well as her fellow classmates of whom he blackmailed.
Christmas break was coming up soon and Bella was so excited to just get a break from everything and most importantly a break from Win who was always watching. Everywhere she went he was there in the corner of her eye waiting for Bella to crack and tell her friends everything.
It was the day of school when everyone would go home and just relax and not have to worry about school, sports, and homework. The rusty old school actually looked normal because this was probably one of the teachers happiest days besides when the school ended for summer break.
There were knock-offs of reefs and fake Christmas trees with little cheap LED lights. It felt so relieving and the day was going by so fast Bella thought she actually might miss school over the break but then she realized what had been happening this entire year and she thought to herself that she was crazy. Because how in the world could she miss being blackmailed. But the best part of all is that after winter break she was being transferred to a new school where Win couldn’t follow her and expose or blackmail her for everyone of her secrets.
It was during lunch that Win came up to her and in a very creepy voice told her “ I’ll be watching you.” But at that point because Bella's day was going so well she felt a little uncomfortable but she just continued to eat her chili and cinnamon roll. Because she knew something that he didn’t for once in her life. Bella didn't plan on telling a sole either that she was transferring in fear of Win finding out. If Win ever found out he would expose all of Bella's secrets in a blink of an eye. Her reputation her friends all out the window for what? Nothing.
The last period came and Bella was so excited to leave this school and never come back. All the memories that she made were mostly lies and when they weren’t a lie, they always ended up hurting her or someone else and Bella just didn't want a life anymore where that would happen.
As she was walking out of the school she realized that if she was leaving she was going to end it with a big finale.
Bella Elizabeth Beamond was going to kill Winstin Smith.
Over Winter break Bella was going to plan out the entire thing. Where it was going to go down and how Bella was going to do it. She decided to make it a murder that everyone would remember but she could never let them know because she had no plan to go to jail for the rest of her life.
Once Bella had planned it all out she was ready. Bella was going to take this murder head on. With absolutely no help from anyone, Bella was afraid that if she had any help in this situation then that person would crumble under the stress and guilt that came with this mission.
Once Bella got home to her average house in Wickenburg, Arizona. To her parents waiting for her at the kitchen counter having an expression that meant that there was bad news coming afterward. Bella’s mom tried to speak but Bella didn’t want to hear it because her day had been going so good and that news could wait until the next day to ruin Bella's life, weeks, days, it really just depends on what the news is. But Bella had a feeling that this news was going to affect the entire murder of Winstin.
The next morning Bella knew it was time to let her parents tell her what the news they had for her was. “Good morning sweetie, how did you sleep?” Bella’s mother said in a very cheerful way, acting as if nothing was wrong.
“Fine,” Bella replied grumpily and not excited or ready for the bad news about to come later in the day.
“Okay, so we have some bad news and you’re not going to like it.” Bella's dad said very slowly trying to make it so that Bella could process it and calm down before they both told her.
“ Well, who likes bad news? Psychopaths?” Bella responded procrastinating so that maybe her parents would suddenly think about a completely different topic than the bad news they just had to give her.
Well, you see honey. About transferring to another school. Ummm, I don’t think that’s going to happen. Only because we have only just moved here and you have so many friends..” But Bella's mother was interrupted by Bella's rage.
“What are you talking about! We have lived here for over a year now and I don’t have any friends besides the people who just like the attention!” As Bella finished her very dramatic yelling toward her mother, she turned around and started heading towards the carpeted stairs stomping her feet and mumbling under her breath about how unfair this was and how this completely ruined her plans to kill Win.
But then Bella realized how benifisioal this could be towards the murder. Because it would be really suspicious if all the sudden Winstin was killed and then Bella left town. So Bella decided that she would kill Winstin and then go back to school and pretend to be all heartbroken while really she would be overwhelmed with wicked happiness.
Bella now knew exactly how she was going to kill Winstin and where it was all going to go down. Bella was going to act all generous and invite Winstin to go to their lake house in more of the southern part of Arizona. Once they are there everyone will want to go swimming and Bella and Winstin will sneak off to get some alone time and just need a break from everyone else.
Once they were out of sight from the parents they would play some very peaceful and fun games like the color game and guess that tune. But then Bella had a new idea, a dunking game. But little did Winstin know that it would be the last game he would ever play because Bella wasn’t going to let Winstin come back up. And because of how un-athletic Winstin was it was going to be quite easy to keep him under the water.
After Bella knew for sure that he was dead she would go running back to her parents screaming that Winstin was dead.
‘MOM, DAD! HURRY, WINSTON'S DEAD!”
By Peyton Westra
I sprint to gather my things and head out the door, not wanting Ally and Ruth to wait any longer. I glide down the porch steps in quick motion as I race to the car. I hear the booming music coming from the neighbors that kept me up all night long. I race down my driveway, things in hand, and I finally step into the bright red Convertible.
“I still can’t believe you got this from your Uncle Joe, Ruth.” I say sarcastically, “He should have just given it to me!”
Ruth and Ally share a laugh, “You know you can’t stand the thought of driving, Liz,” Ruth says with enthusiasm.
“Haha, very funny. You got me,” I say with doubt in my voice. I always forget they know that about me. “So, where are we headed?”
“Coach Jay said it was at Center Grove Fields,” Ally says with disappointment. “I always get lost every time we go there.”
“Maybe we should just put a collar on you”, Ruth laughs.
“Very funny, Ruth,” Ally gives Ruth a snotty look.
“Ruth, I told you. I’m not a dog,” Ally says in annoyance.
“But, you are~”, Ruth explains while touching Ally annoyingly.
I hear the flashbacks come back to me. Bickering arguments from long ago meant to annoy each other.
“Do I look like a dog to you, Ruth?” Ally explains in frustration.
My eyes slowly drift asleep as I sit in the car out of boredom from hearing the heated argument.
15 minutes drift away and I can hear only a few words coming from Ally and Ruth. The bright rays of the sun cover my face, as I drift back to sleep.
I hear sirens go off in my sleep, only to think of it as a dream.
Sophia? Where are you? Sophia!
My head jolts up from yelling in the distance, “Elizabeth! Liz! Elizabeth Moore! Wake up, sleepyhead!” Ruth and Ally yell at me to get my attention.
“Something is going on at the grounds,” Ruth yells over the sirens. She says while she stops at the exit towards the fields.
I look to my left and see lines of cars coming out of the softball grounds. Cars line up at the exit of the fields, softball teams are running around nervously, parents frantically look around the fields, and police dogs sniff around areas on the grounds.
“What happened here?” I say curiously.
A long pause silences Ally and Ruth, we hear police cars blaring their sirens and Ruth pulls over to the side of the road. The police force races towards the softball fields.
“I don’t know what’s going on,” Ruth whispers nervously.
Silence interrupts in the car, as we watch in suspicion towards the softball grounds. Ruth pulls up to the softball players section of the parking lot and parks in our team section. We sit and listen for a while as police sirens blare in the distance.
Ally looks on her phone for updates, “There’s nothing reported,“ Ally says with nervous suspicion. “Should I call Coach Jay or Hailey,” Ally whispers to Ruth.
I couldn’t hear what Ruth said to Ally but all of a sudden Ally dials someone. I rub my eyes to get a closer look at the caller id on Ally’s phone but I couldn’t make it out. Ally’s phone keeps on ringing as she waits for the caller to pick up but it goes to voicemail.
“Hey, this is Miranda Freer, please leave me a message at the tone,” and Ally’s phone went silent. Worried looks came across Ruth and Ally’s faces. A police officer strolls along the sidewalk with a German Shepard by the player’s parking lot. Nervous looks go around as the officer inches closer to our car. We can almost see the officer’s face but the dog starts barking rapidly.
The policeman looks in our car and yells over the dog’s loud barking, “ What are you two ladies doing?” Can he not see me? I stood up taller in the back of the car so the police officer could see me.
“You mean three?” Ruth says in confusion.
“Oh alright,” the officer looks around. Did he not see me in the back of the car? “What are you ladies doing here? These grounds are on lockdown.” The dog stares closely at me and growls slowly. “What are you growling at, Lou?” The officer says.
“He’s growling at me, sir,” I say. The officer looks in confusion and stares at me.
“Sorry about that. He usually doesn’t act like this.” The officer says apologetically, still eyeing me in suspicion.
“Well, we are here to play softball today sir. What is going on?” Ally says nervously.
A sense of relief floods me when the dog stops growling. “You haven’t heard the news about the Bolts,” the officer says. The officer looks in suspicion at us.
“What happened with the Bolts, sir?” Ruth asks with curiosity. My hands sweat as I hold them in my lap.
“One of their best pitchers went missing,” he responds, “she was last seen at 7:00 am, her name is Sophia Marie-Fernandez.”
Surprised looks cast upon each of our faces. I sadly look at my hands from the news about Sophia Marie-Fernandez. They lay coldly on my lap and grasp my seat belt. My seat belt unbuckles and lashes back into place. I feel the presence of the dog watching me closely as I do this.
“I think we can help,” I sigh sincerely. I shake my head, What did I just get ourselves into now?
Time has flown by since we last saw the police officer, most of the police force have been checking around in the streets nearby. We have searched most of the player section and parts of the fields, there are still no signs of Sophia. We’ve been walking around for hours now and it’s already mid-afternoon.
Ally and Ruth took a break to go get ice cream from the concessions and to see if there are any traces. I hear them talking as they lick their ice cream tops from melting.
I rub my eyes with sweat. I see a Gatorade stand in the distance and swiftly run over there with exhaustion. I grab the tinted blue cups and pour water into my cup from the coolers. I drink the water with satisfaction, as I feel the droplets of water slowly but surely relieve my thirst. I start walking towards the concession stand with my cup of water in hand.
For what seemed to be hours, I make it to the park bench that Ally and Ruth are sitting on. I exhaustedly put down my cup and sit on the park bench. I rub my eyes with defeat from walking in the sun for hours. I slowly turn my eyes to see Ally and Ruth staring at me like I have my head chopped off.
“When did you have eyeblack on?” Ruth says with confusion.
“What do you mean?” I rub my eyes harder and see black ink stain my hands. “I never put any eyeblack on today.” I look nervously at my hands. “The only thing that I have touched so far is that cup,” I say as I point towards the cup.
Ally sprints towards the cup and grabs it. When she looks at the cup in her hand, she stands in shock.
“Read it,” Ally says to Ruth as she hands the cup.
Ruth stands with no words and hands me the cup. They watch me as I slowly read the cup. I read it slowly in my head, Time is running low within the forest. I drop the cup and look at Ally and Ruth. Ally picks up the cup and sprints to the investigation tent. We chase after her and wait outside the tent.
“What do you think this means... “ I say slowly.
“I honestly don’t know…” Ruth sighs with disappointment.
Voices of competition coming from inside the tent. Silence fills the air as we hear footsteps come out of the tent.
“We have to leave…” Ally says slowly as she lifts the tents door covers.
“What do you mean?” I ask with surprise as I look at Ally’s hurt eyes.
“They don’t want us here, they said it’s too dangerous…” Ally says as she starts heading towards the car. Ruth stands in shock next to me as she watches Ally walk away.
“What do you mean they don’t need us, we just spent four hours walking around this complex!” I yell angrily at Ally, “ I am not giving up on this!” I say in anger.
“We can’t do anything, Liz… it’s over…” Ally pouts.
“Yes, we can Ally! Don’t you see it? We don’t need grown-ups telling us what to do!” I yell even louder.
“No Liz, we can’t do anything,” Ally apologetically says. A commotion erupts from the tent.
“Well guess what I can!” I yell as I run into the forest.
“Liz, wait!! Elizabeth!” Ruth and Ally scream behind me.
I run farther into the woods until I am out of breath. I lay next to a tree trying to catch my breath, I heard the pounding of my heart as I try to take deep breaths in. The crunching of leaves haunts me from behind.
“Elizabeth!! Liz!!” Ruth and Ally yell close by.
Oh no, they are gonna find me. I have to help find Sophia! I quietly walk in between trees trying not to be seen by Ally or Ruth. The soft crunching sounds of leaves quiet my footsteps. I can still hear them behind me… I could make a run for it.
“Elizabeth Moore!! Where are you?!” Ruth and Ally yell once more.
I see them looking around as I hide my body behind a tree. Ally looks towards my way and swiftly looks around. I try to hide behind the trees but I see Ally’s face brighten up. She saw me. I sprint farther into the woods with Ally and Ruth following my tracks.
In the distance, I see a small shack in the middle of the forest. With no time left to spare I open the door of the shack and go inside.
My bones shiver with fear as I stand in the shack. The shack is dark and quiet. I see faint lights seep through the small window panels, and crunching leaves coming outside. I hear the voices of Ally and Ruth whispering. I hear ticking sounds of what seems to be a clock coming from the other side of the room.
I walk towards the side of the room and see a tall door with engravings on the handle. The sound of a ticking clock gets louder and louder as I inch closer towards the door. I hear the creaking of another door open and I freeze. I turn around and see Ally and Ruth staring at me, I stare into Ally’s sad encrusted eyes watching me with disappointment.
“Come on Liz, we shouldn’t be here,” Ruth says with suspicion while looking around.
“I need to find Sophia, she could be dead for all we know,” I say, still angered with fear.
“Just come on, Liz. The police told us to stay away from the investigations now.” Ally says.
I look sadly at Ally’s and Ruth’s faces for the last time and I open the engraved door.
Gusts of wind push me through the doorway, and I open my eyes to a small clock shop hidden beneath the door’s cover. The shop is fairly quiet but I hear the ticks of each clock as they get closer to noon. I look around with a sense of home, but when I turn around and see a timer sitting in the corner of the wall. I gaze at the timer with sudden anger. What is going on?
More wind shakes the clock shop, clocks begin to fall off each shelf. One by one until Ruth and Ally appear in the midst of them.
“Liz? Are you there?” Ally yells.
“Ally? ” I yell back.
“Liz? ” Ally says uncertainty.
Ally and Ruth look around and rush towards me in the clearing of dust.
“You should have never done that, Liz.” Ally tears up as she walks closer to me.
Ruth walks quietly with Ally with no words. Ally and Ruth inch closer to me, and I wait for what’s to come. What are they doing? Ally and Ruth stand in front of me and embrace me in a hug.
A sudden pull of wind and both of their hands fall short. Their hands glide right through my arm.
“What is wrong with you, Liz? Why can’t I touch you?” Ally says shockingly.
Ruth comes closer again and tries to touch me. Her hands whisk right through my shoulder.
“What is happening?!” Ruth shakes in fear.
Our conversation quickly goes silent. We stare face to face from the clocks to the floor. Clocks ticking as time goes by.
“You see I am already gone, the timer went off an hour ago. I am dead, I have always been dead. I am Sophia Marie-Fernandez.” I plead, as I slowly disappear, “I died 15 years ago, yet you still haven’t found me in the waters of the Center Grove River.”

“I wonder what I would be doing if my parents were not gone,” I said to myself in a quiet whisper.
I had been on the plane for six long hours. I could not fall asleep no matter how hard I tried. After three more tiring, crucial hours, the plane ride was nearing an end, we were landing in a state called Florida. I had never seen anything so amazing in my life. It was truly extraordinary.
“If only my parents could see this.” I started crying. sobbing, screaming now, “ Why do they have to be gone!” I screamed. Everyone stared at me. The rest of the day was a blur, I was so exhausted all I could remember was getting in a taxi and going to my hotel. It was weird being a 14 year old in my own hotel, I thought to myself as I was laying in a very soft queen size bed.
As I woke up the next day I could not believe what the state of Florida looked like compared to Africa. The cars, trains, buses, and planes. Everything was full of life. When I finally took into consideration where I was at and why I was here, I threw up a little bit in my mouth.
“Why me?” I thought for probably the longest hour of my life while I was staring out of the big floor to ceiling window. “Why me,” I said over and over until I finally dozed off.
The next day was the day I would be going to the school I would be staying at. I still did not know how or if I was going to be able to stay at this school but I had to, it was my only option.
As I woke up I sat up on the comfiest bed I had ever slept on and touched my bare toes on the soft rug of the hotel room floor. I just sat there and stared, and stared, and stared, until I looked up at the clock on the wall that read 8:00 A.M.
“I’m late!” I yelled shakily, not ready for the school day that lay ahead of me, “I have to eat breakfast, brush my teeth, and get dressed!” I said as I scurried down the hall out of the hotel. I did not have any money so I dumpster-dived for a half-eaten sandwich. As I was sprinting to the bus stop in treacherous hot weather, I dropped my sandwich, “Ugghh!” I
As I woke up I sat up on the comfiest bed I had ever slept on and touched my bare toes on the soft rug of the hotel room floor.
As I was sprinting to the bus stop in treacherous hot weather, I dropped my sandwich, “Ugghh!” I screamed in frustration and sat on the bench, sweat dripping off my face, at the bus stop still hungry. Screech! The bus stopped in front of me. I tiredly walked up the steep steps of the big yellow bus, like the one that people explained to me back in Africa.
“That will be one quarter.” The bus driver yelled over all of the other passengers on the bus. Luckily I had picked up one quarter from the street on the way to the bus stop. After I gave the bus driver my only quarter, I slowly walked to the only open seat on the bus. I was so tired I decided to take a nap. As I sat up not knowing what was going on, the bus stopped. I stood up and almost threw up at the thought of going to school, but I held it in and walked off the bus.
The school was absolutely huge! The floor to ceiling windows, the tall red brick walls, Everything looked brand new. “I better get inside.” I thought, trembling. As I walked in the big doors of the school, I saw a bunch of kids walking up and down the hallways. It was a big commotion. As I walked in everybody stared at me. I started walking faster, running to find a bathroom, “blaagghh!’ I threw up on the brand new carpeted floor. The only person that seemed to care was a very nerdy looking guy. He wore glasses, a suit, and was very slim.
“Oh no!” The kid said as he was using a mop to clean it up. “What happened.” the kid said.
“Just nervous,” I said, even more trembly than before. I awkwardly stared down at my feet. “What’s your name.” The kid asked, not even acknowledging what just happened.
“Joshua.” I said with a slight smile. “How about you.” I intriguingly asked.
“Ronald.” The kid said in a friendly voice. I was starting to stop trembling a bit and looked back up at Ronald, my face red as a tomato.
“Thank you so much for helping me clean up the mess.” I tried to say as friendly as possible.
“No need to thank me. Oh, and by the way I made something for you,” Ronald genuinely said, passing me a weirdly shaped red box. “How about we go to the cafeteria and get something to eat to make you not so nervous,” Ronald said, as he started leading me to a huge hallway in the middle of the school, me still looking closely at the oddly shaped box.
“Wow.” I excitedly whispered. It was nice having someone who was willing to pay for overpriced food.
“Also, don’t open that box until you think you absolutely need to.”
I could not remember the rest of the day even if I tried. I could only pay for one night at the hotel so I had to stay at the school. The good thing about Ronald was that he was going to help me get food and sleep at the school. The place I would be staying in was in the library reading nook. It had brand new furniture and carpet. After planning my day I laid a very soft unused blanket on a couch and drifted off to sleep
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! “Alright!” I tiredly groaned as the alarm for 6:00 A.M. went off. I sat on the couch that I slept on and kicked the alarm over. BEEP! BEE! BE B--- silence. I could smell the lunch ladies (as Ronald called them) cooking breakfast for the coming day. I was super hungry and the smell did not help. My stomach was squeezing. I slowly crept down the room digging my toes into the soft carpet of the library to go to the bathroom with the box still in my hand. “The bathrooms are so clean,” I whispered to myself as my bare toes touched the cold tile floor.
`It was nearing the time Ronald said he would be giving me a fresh pair of clothes.
“Knock, knock,” Ronald said as he was slowly walking into the library. In his hands was a jacket, a pair of jeans, and some shoes. As I put the clothes on I stared into the hallway in which Ronald came in through.
“This school is huge,” I nervously said to Ronald as I was biting my fingernails.
“I know,” Ronald said confidently. After planning my day with Ronald it was time to eat breakfast. Since other kids in the school had class Ronald brought me a plate of a cinnamon roll and some chocolate milk to the janitor’s closet I had to eat in.
“Mmm,” I said sarcastically looking down at the food.
“How did your parents die?” Ronald hesitantly asked.
“My dad got a disease and he spread it to my mom, and then…” I stopped talking.
“I’m so sorry,” Ronald said in a quiet voice.
“It's fine,” I said, shedding a tear. “I just don't like talking about it. I just want to forget about it.” I said, wiping the tears from my face. Ronald slowly walked away from the closet to the lunchroom to get his own breakfast. The next few days went the same. Nothing exciting. The only thing that happened was that the local gas station occasionally gives me some of the change that gets left behind. A few more boring days later I was talking to the guy that owned the gas station while I was watching the tv behind his desk. I saw a news report of a guy who kidnapped, or in this case adult-napped, a husband and wife. The pictures of the people looked almost exactly like my parents.
I looked closer. “That is my parents!” I screamed as I flew out of the station, dropping the box. I ran as fast as I could to a lady standing on the side of the road. “Where is the police station,” I said out of breath.
“Take two lefts and go straight.” The lady said. “Is everything okay?” The woman worriedly asked. I did not have time to answer because I was already running in the direction she told me to go in. As I made it to the police station I asked the lady at the front desk,
“Who were the people that got kidnapped last week.”
“What is your name young man?” The lady at the front desk asked.
“Joshua Mambwe,” I replied.
“Oh no, the people who got kidnapped are Allysa and Zane Mambwe.” The lady at the front desk said worriedly.
“Where are they!” I screamed. “Where are they!” I screamed, banging my head on the wall.
“I'm afraid we don't know yet.”
“I am going to find out myself,” I said, storming out of the police station. Ronald needs to know this. I thought to myself. He's smart, he can figure anything out. “Right?” I questioned myself. When I got back to the school Ronald was waiting by the door. School was almost out.
“Where were you?” Ronald asked me.
“I have to tell you something very important,” I said. “My parents, they are not dead.” This whole situation was weird, I am usually shy, so when I just walked into the police station and yelled, it was all weird.
“What?!” Ronald said in utter shock.
“They were kidnapped, it showed them on TV this morning. We have to find them.”
“This is crazy,” Ronald said in disbelief. “My dad knows some sketchy people, maybe we could talk to him.” Meanwhile, the guy at the gas station picked up the box and slowly opened it. It was a stuffed bear.
“That would be a good start,” I said.
“I am not very close to my dad so I will have to schedule a time tomorrow, maybe at noon to go get a burger at Papa’s Fast and Fresh.”
“Sounds good,” I said worried about my parents.
The next day at noon I met Ronald and his dad Brett, at a local restaurant called Papa’s Fast And Fresh. “Dad this is Joshua, Joshua, this is my dad.
“Nice to meet you sir.” I mumbled nervously. Ronald’s dad was a big mean looking guy, who wore a baseball cap, and a shirt with the sleeves cut off. As we were eating, Ronald’s dad had to go to the bathroom. He left his phone behind. Ding! Ronald’s dad's phone got a message.
“Oh no,” Ronald said in horror.
“What?” I asked worriedly.
“It is about your parents, the kidnapper, it is my father.”
At this moment I realized that I left the box at the gas station. “We have to get out of here!” I yelled. Meanwhile, the owner of the gas station put the bear back in the box. As he looked out the window he saw Joshua and Ronald.
“You forgot something!” The man yelled as he tossed the box to me. This is the time to open it. I thought to myself. But I held back from opening it just yet.
As Ronald and I ran out of the door, everyone stared at us. “I always knew my dad had mental problems but I did not know it was this bad,” Ronald said, already tired.
“ I can't believe it. You loved your dad, I'm so sorry.” Ronald said as I whistled for a taxi. As Ronald and I got in, Ronald gave the directions to his dad's house. After the surprisingly short ride, we made it to Ronald’s dad's house, the house was small but cozy. As we walked in I yelled. “Hello!”
I was so relieved to hear my mom's very soothing voice say hello back.
Ronald and I both ran down the stairs to find my mom and dad tied up in a chair like in the movies.
“Oh my gosh.” My mom said crying.
“Hi buddy.” My dad said in a surprisingly calm voice.
“What are we waiting for, let's get you untied before my dad gets home,” Ronald said. I grabbed the scissors off of the counter and cut them both free. Now was the time to open it. I thought to myself. As I opened the box, all I saw was a stuffed toy bear.
“It's cute,” I said softly.
“It is actually a tracker.” Ronald said, “I had to Disguise it so if anyone dropped it and someone picked it up, they wouldn't know what it was.”
“Mom, Dad you can have this,” I said, Ronald and I started laughing
“Let's get to the airport, we can talk later.” I don't know how I got on the plane. I just woke up on it. I stretched and looked at my mom and dad, looking at me funny. “We are almost to Florida buddy.” My dad said.
You must have had a bad dream, you were flailing your arms like a monkey.” The moment I realized that it was all a dream I groaned. “Yeah, I must have.” Although I was very confused, I pretended to know I had a dream and closed my eyes and drifted back into a deep sleep.
As I stepped off of the plane, I saw a man that looked strangely like Ronald’s dad in my dream holding the same red box. He pointed at me. I gulped.

It is the summer of 2020. Mr. Paublo Fordso was sacked by AS Roma after finishing 15th in the Italian First Division (Serie A). He has been out of a managerial position for about 6 months now. Sitting in the office of his huge, warm mansion in Argentina at 12:45 in the afternoon… RING, his phone rang,
“Who is this,” Fordso asked.
“Mr. Fordso, we would like to hire you as our new manager,” an unknown voice said.
“Is this some sort of sick joke? I asked you, who is this?” Fordso replied.
“This is the chairman of Barnsley Football Club, as I said we would like to hire you,” the Chairman told Fordso.
“Barnsley, Barnsley! HA!,” laughed Fordso, “And why would I sign for you?”
“Well you clearly can’t cut it in the big leagues anymore, at least for now,” said the Chairman.
Fordso paused, what did he mean by for now?
“For now?” Fordso emphasized.
“We believe that if you sign for us,” the chairman told Fordso. “It will revive your career by taking us to the Premier League or further.”
Fordso seemed convinced.
“Ok I will sign for you, see you next week,” Fordso hung up the phone.
Fordso was concerned though, he was once a former managerial giant and now managing Barnsley of all teams. He seemed foolish of himself. The media will definitely have a field day with this one.
ONE WEEK LATER
The year is 2020. Barnsley F.C last season finished 20th, nearly getting relegated to the 3rd division (League 1). The club sacked their last manager for getting them into that position and have now announced that they have hired Paublo Fordso. What made Paublo so good back in the day was he won 2 Champions League titles with Paris Saint Germain in a row with a bunch of other trophies in Ligue 1, the French First Division. In the cold almost misty room, now Barnsley manager Paublo Fordso takes questions from the media.
“Mr. Fordso, why have you signed for Barnsley,” a journalist asked.
Fordso stopped to think, “Do I be honest?” he thought. “It would be the right thing to do, but I would make a fool of myself doing it, being a laughing stock once more, uhhhhhhh… ”
“Because I think it will revive my career as a manager,” Fordso replied.
“Well, what are your goals as Barnsley manager,” another journalist asked.
“To get them back in the Premier League and even further,” Fordso replied.
He felt foolish to say that. He didn’t believe himself that he had the ability to do that. All of those sackings seemed to finally catch up to him, at the worst possible time, at his first press-conference with his new team that believes that out of all of the managers in the world, they chose him. After a few more questions, Fordso went to his new home on the outskirts of Sheffield, about a thirty minute drive from Barnsley. He went home and went straight to bed, after all it was 9:30.
7 MONTHS LATER
Today is February 23rd, 2021, Paublo Fordso’s birthday, and the best present he could have been given was Barnsley F.C at the top of the league with 4 months of the season to go! His top goal scorer Tim Plasting with 18 goals in 27 games for the club, His goalkeeper Paul Dunningham with 10 clean-sheets in 27 games and also with 2 assists, His captain Roger Nolderson with 9 goals and 13 assists, Points wise they have only lost 2 games, drawn 6, and won 19. That is 63 points, a team record, they are 9 points ahead of second place A.F.C Bournemouth, and 11 points ahead of third place Bristol City. Paublo celebrated with his family and then after that, his team won 4-0 against Bristol City with Roger Nolderson getting two goals and one assist, and Peter Sanders with two goals as well. This was probably the best birthday Paublo Fordso ever had, almost too good.
4 MONTHS LATER
Barnsley are officially crowned the champions of the Championship, getting promoted to the Premier League for the second time in the club’s history, Finishing ahead of A.F.C Bournemouth by 3 points, and Huddersfield Town by 10 points. They finished with 5 loses, 10 draws, and 31 wins. That is a total of 101 points. In the locker room with players all around him, Fordso is congratulating his players for a job well done this season.
“Well done boys,” Fordso congratulated .
“Ayyyyyyyy,” The players respond audibly.
“You guys did a fantastic job this season you might think I’m lying but this is one of the best teams I’ve ever had,” Fordso said passionately.
“AYYYYYYYYY,” the players responded.
“You guys are truly amazing footballers,” Fordso cheered.
“AAAYyyy,” the players' cheers died down and pointed towards the T.V
“We have breaking news here,” a newswoman said, “Barnsley Football Club have just been found guilty of financial mismanagement for being $154 million in debt and will be going into administration.”
“Wait what!” Fordso looked at the T.V along with the players.
“This means,” the newswoman said, “Barnsley Football Club will be deducted 12 points, stripped of the Championship title and it be given to A.F.C Bournemouth, and will have to go through the playoffs.”
“WHAT!” Fordso screamed. Those words felt like a dagger piercing through his heart and ripped out over and over again. “Those D*** owners,” Fordso screamed louder.
“It's okay gaffer,” a player said, trying to sooth Fordso.
“It’s not okay, we’re stripped of the league because we have owners who can’t not prevent us from getting promoted!” Fordso yelled but seemed to get calm.
“It IS okay gaffer because if we win the playoffs we get promoted AND are out of debt, you know if you win the prize money is $200 million,” another player told Fordso.
“Really? Well what if we lose the playoffs?” Fordso asked strangely calmly.
“We won’t, we, for about 3 and1/2 hours were the champions, there is no way we lose,” Paul Dunningham said.
Fordso, still mad, accepted what Paul said. He gave his team a motivational speech and then went home for the night, tired, motivated, and hungry.
TWO WEEKS LATER. PLAYOFF FINAL DAY.
Barnsley F.C vs Bristol City at Wembley Stadium
In the buzzing Wembley locker room the players prepare,
“Hey guys gather around me,” Fordso said, “Lets win this game, not just for yourselves, not just for this team, not just for me, but so you can save this dying club by getting them out of debt.”
“Yes boys lets do this!” Roger Nolderson emphatically stated.
“Yeah, COME ON BARNSLEY! COME ON BARNSLEY!” The players chanted.
The team finished their pep-talk and rushed out the door to get out on the field. As both of the teams were about to walk out onto the field, seeing this huge stadium they were playing in, hearing loads of fans cheering these separate teams on, Fordso stayed in the locker room for a little bit. He looked at the clock, 12:45, he knew that time. It was the time that he got that phone call to manage Barnsley F.C, a team that gave him a chance when no other team would. He started to tear up but then wiped away his tears and rushed out the door.
“COME ON BARNSLEY! COME ON BARNSLEY!” the Barnsley fans repeatedly cheered.
“BRISTOL CITY, BRISTOL CITY!” the Bristol City fans shouted, singing in tune.
“Jeez, man this is incredible,” Roger said to Paul Dunnigham.
“I know, lets win this game!” Paul Dunningham pumped up Roger.
“Yeah lets do this!” Roger said pumped up.
After both of the teams captains exchanged a few words before kick off, Bristol City got the ball first. The players got ready, formations put together.
“TWEEEET!” the referee’s whistle blew.
And they were off! Bristol City started off attacking well and they had gotten a few chances in the box and Barnsley have had a few chances as well. But every person in that stadium knew, this was going to be special.
“Here comes Bristol City,” the commentator told his audience, “Here they come out on the right crossing the ball into the box and WOW! What a fantastic header by the Bristol City striker! Barnsley 0-1 Bristol City in the 35th minute.”
“Hey keep your head up lads! We can still win this game!” Fordso yelled on the touchline.
And that is half-time, Barnsley 0-1 Bristol City. Both sides have played well but only one goal to show for it. As the Barnsley players come into the locker room Fordso is already there waiting for them. He told them that they need to be more attacking yet when they’re hit on the counter-attack they need to sprint back and recover defensively. After that the players come out of the locker room for the second half, they need 2 goals to win the game and they need a miracle almost.
And the second half begins. Barnsley didn’t attack right out of the gate creating so few chances. Surely there would’ve been more passion from the players.
“Here comes Barnsley on the attack. Crossing the ball from the left into the box, but cleared out by the Bristol City defender. But it lands softley towards Tim Plasting on the edge of the box. He shoots, OH MY GOODNESS! What a goal by Tim Plasting!” the commentator yelled into the microphone, “ That’s a cracking of a volley. He has been on a bit of a goal drought lately but what a way to end it! Barnsley 1-1 Bristol City in the 73rd minute.”
“Great goal Tim!” Fordso yelled from the touchline.
Tim gave Fordso a thumbs up back at him, “Thanks gaffer.”
And after that the game changed, Barnsley seemed to get their spark back in the game now, the only thing is, how long will it last?
“Here are Bristol City pushing up the middle, dribbles around a couple of defenders and WHAT A SAVE BY PAUL DUNNINGHAM!” the commentator yelled, “How did he not score that! That would have been a goal that sealed the deal for Bristol City! Now here come Barnsley attacking on the left crossing it into the middle, heads the ball, saved. But the goalkeeper spilt the ball and Nolderson scores! With only a few seconds remaining in the game, Nolderson scores the goal that will surely send Barnsley into the Premier League!”
“Yeeeeesssss!” Fordso screamed running down the sideline joining the huddle of players on top of Roger.
“And as you can see, Paublo Fordso is in total euphoria!”The commentator commented, “As he should be, what he has done for the club is almost, no, is incredible!”
After that it was official, Barnsley Football Club are officially in the Premier League. After becoming champions, to having to go through the playoffs, to going back to the Premier League for the second time in their history and, as a bonus, the club are out of debt with the $200 million prize money from winning the playoffs. Fordso in the locker room now officially congratulating his players on a job well done this season.
“Boys,” Fordso went on, “What you did out there, was simply amazing. The passion you showed out there to perform on Wembley for crying out loud, under all that pressure. Simply amazing,” Fordso started to tear up.
“Hey gaffer, it's okay,” a player comforted Fordso.
“I know, I know,” Fordso said with a single tear on his cheek that he wiped away, “If there is one thing I want you to learn from my tear-fest is that we are in the Premier League now and you guys are amazing.”
“Thanks gaffer,” they all said.
And they left all onto the team bus back to Barnsley, back as a Premier League team singing chants on the way home and felt happy all as a team.
2 MONTHS LATER
Now it is the start of the Premier League season, this season Barnsley F.C are favored to go straight back down to the championship. This is mainly due to the lack of new signings this past transfer window, only bringing in a centre-back Lucian Farne from Real Sociodad in the Spanish First Division, (La Liga). Barnsley’s first game is against Manchester United who have declined in recent years but are still a challenge, especially for a team like Barnsley F.C.
GAME DAY
Barnsley F.C vs Manchester United
In the home locker room the players prepare,
“Okay boys, gather around me,” Fordso yelled, “Big game today right? Of course it is, it is Manchester bloody United. Just play your hearts out today this is the Premier League there are going to be many many many challenges this season, you got me?”
“Yeah we do!” the new boy Farne replied.
With that confidence the players headed out of the locker room to face Manchester United. They didn’t know what they were getting into just yet.
“TWEET,” the referee’s whistle blew.
The ball is rolling and Manchester United are quiet this first half underperforming surprisingly Barnsley are the impressers this first half.
“Here come Barnsley now,” the commentator told his audience, “Attacking from the left side crossing it into the box, with the shot! Saved by Dean Henderson and deflected out for a corner. Roger Nolderson with the corner, kicks the ball into the box and what a header by the new boy, Lucian Farne. It is Barnsley who takes the lead at home and as you can see, the crowd goes wild! Barnsley 1-0 Manchester United in the 41st minute.
And there wasn’t much to talk about for the rest of the game because, well, there is nothing to talk about for the rest of the game because there were no more goals! Barnsley F.C beat Manchester United 1-0 at the Oakwell!
5 MONTHS LATER
It is mid January and Barnsley F.C are in 1st place, 5 points from second place Manchester City. They have played 21 games this season, won 15, drawn 2, lost 3, that means they are on 47 points. 2nd place Manchester City with 42 points, 3rd place Liverpool with 41 points, and 4th place Tottenham Hotspur with 38 points. Paublo Fordso is in total euphoria with the performances with his team, if he wins the league with this team he will be considered a managerial icon for what he has done with this club.
4 MONTHS LATER
Today is the last game of the season. Barnsley are currently in 3rd place on 85 points, 3 points from the top of the table with 89 goal difference. 1st place Manchester City on 88 points with 78 goal difference, 2nd place Liverpool with 87 points and with 90 goal difference, and in 4th place Manchester United with 83 points on 65 goal difference. Barnsley need a miracle to win the title because today they play Manchester City who are at the top of the table and who have a team full of star-studded players like Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bryune, and Ederson. Liverpool play relegated Huddersfield Town so that will be an easy game for them
GAME DAY
Barnsley F.C vs Manchester City and Liverpool vs Huddersfield Town
In the home locker room the Barnsley players prepare,
“Hey boys listen up!” Fordso yelled, “I know you feel down in the gutters by thinking that there is no way we win the league but, keep this in the back of your mind. If you are gonna fail; fail in the most spectacular way. You hear me? Put on a show for your fans out there, make them support your team even if we don’t win the title because we have already defied the odds on insurmountable levels.”
“Yeah let’s do this!” The players emphatically stated.
And they were out the door in a flash getting ready to get onto the pitch and put on a show for the fans, and boy what a show it would be. But, like in the playoff final, Paublo Fordso stayed a little bit longer. He looked at the time again, 10:00, he knew that time as well. That was the time that he got sacked by AS Roma two years ago, god, where did he go wrong there actually where did he go wrong on so many occasions, Real Madrid in ‘09, Chelsea in ‘10, PSG in ‘14, Napoli in ‘16, Manchester United in ‘18, Tottenham in 19’ AS Roma two years ago. What was he doing, what was he thinking back in those days. Anyway he shrugged it off and went onto the pitch with his players because now, there was a chance to redeem all of that.
“TWEET!” the referee’s whistle blew.
The ball has been kicked off for the final game of the season. Barnsley have started off with a fiery passion creating so many chances answering the coaches orders to play the best game of their lives.
“Here is Barnsley on the attack, coming up the middle passing it out to the left side, crossing it into the middle, header, Goal! Headed in by Tim Plasting, Barnsley just need Huddersfield Town to win at home!” The commentator yelled, “Barnsley 1-0 Manchester City in the 15th minute!”
“Come on boys we can do this!” Fordso shouted.
30 MINUTES LATER
“The ball goes out of bounds for a Manchester City throw in,” the commentator said, “Oh and we seem to be getting word that Huddersfield Town have scored, this means that right now Barnsley F.C are at the top of the table because they have a better goal difference than Manchester City!’
“YESSSSSSSSSSSS!” The Barnsley fans screamed.
“As you can hear, the Barnsley fans have gone wild!” the commentator said trying to hear his own voice due to the noise.
“Hey boys,” Fordso yelled, “Focus on your game and your performances and this will stay for the rest of the day!”
“TWEET TWEET TWEET!” The referee’s whistle blew for halftime.
“TWEET,” the referee’s whistle blew for the second half.
The ball is off rolling again but soon enough things were gonna get interesting.
45 MINUTES LATER
“Here we are, 5 minutes added on for stoppage time. The Huddersfield Town and Liverpool game has finished 1-0 so that means Barnsley just need to keep this scoreline and they can win the Premier League,” the commentator stated, “Oh but here come Manchester City on the attack, their star-man Kevin De Bruyne on the ball. He is dribbling past a few defenders, gets one on one against the goalkeeper and he scores! With 2 minutes left in the game Manchester City are surely winning the Premier League!”
And that was pretty much the end of it, Barnsley F.C were not the champions. Or so you thought.
“Here come Barnsley F.C, everybody coming forward for what is surely their last attempt at a chance of winning the Premier League, here comes Tim Plasting dribbling the ball into the 18-yard box,” the commentator is telling his audience, “He shoots!”
And as soon as he shot that ball it felt like time itself stopped; everything had gone quiet; both of the teams fates rested on one kick of the ball; it felt as a life or death situation for both teams.
“Oh and he misses,” the commentator sighed, “Wait but he has gone down!”
“TWEET!” The referee has pointed to the spot for the penalty kick.
“YEEEESSSS!” The Barnsley fans went wild.
“Yes, ok now, tuck this in Roger,” Nolderson told himself, “Tuck this in and we are Premier League Champions!”
“And as you can see the Barnsley fans have gone absolutely bonkers!” the commentator screamed.
Roger Nolderson stepped up to take the penalty, the 31 year old who was just an average Championship player for Barnsley now is taking the biggest kick of his life. If he makes this he is a legend of this club, if he misses he will toss and turn every night wondering what could have been.
“Here comes Roger Nolderson to step up and take the penalty against one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Ederson Moraes,” The commentator said to his audience, wondering if they would witness history.
“Tweet,” the referee’s whistle blew for Nolderson to kick the ball.
He stepped up and he shot the ball, and he scored! Banged it in the top right corner so there was no way that Ederson could reach the ball he thought for a second that it would blaze over the bar but that doesn’t matter now.
“YEEEEESSSSS!” the Barnsley fans went crazy, beer being sprayed everywhere, the whole stadium erupted like Pompeii.
“He slots it home!” The commentator yelled, “Roger Nolderson, cool as a cucumber, no, even cooler because of that much pressure.”
“TWEET, TWEET, TWEET,” the referee’s whistle blew for the end of the game.
And the rest was history, Fordso has redeemed himself as a manager by taking a near League 1 side to Premier League champions, in just two years. He won the Premier League under 6000-1 odds. After a few beers with the team he reflected on the season, obviously the elephant in the room winning the Premier League but he looked at individual performances from his team, again his top goal scorer Tim Plasting who won the golden boot this season with 27 goals this season in 38 games, his captain Roger Nolderson with 11 goals, especially that last one he scored that won them the league, with also a respectable 15 assists, the new boy Lucian Farne who, at center-back, scored 10 goals, assisted 6, and had 18 clean sheets, and his goalkeeper Paul Dunningham with 18 clean sheets. After that Fordso went home and laid back down on his bed but before that he looked at the time, 12:45. He knew what that time meant.
The real unicorn dog who is living his best life. He was born with an extra tail growing from his head, but it doesn't bother him at all. His real name is Narwhal and he is just adorable.

I awoke to the sound of my siblings squirming and whimpering around me. My two brothers toppling over each other, while my sisters barked at them to quiet down. Another day, another day I thought to myself before standing up on my still some-what weak legs and walked over to my mother the best that I could. I laid at her paws and sighed.
“Mother,” I began, “I have a question.” She looked down at me with a warm, caring smile.
“What is it darling?”
“Why do all of the other puppies hate me?” Her smile faded and she let out a defeated sigh.
“They don’t hate you darling, they just-”
“Then why do they judge me and call me unicorn!?” I had cut her off, which I admit was rude, but I just couldn’t take it anymore.
“Because dear, you are…different....if that makes any sense. You will understand when you are a little older, now, why don’t you go play outside for a little while?” I lowered my head and got up on my weak legs once more. I waddled towards the doggy door, already swinging from the other dogs that were already outside. I pushed my head through the doggy door first, then my paws. The ground was cold and wet. I looked up at the grey sky, the sun just barely peeking through. It must have rained again. I thought to myself as I walked over to the corner of the decently sized outdoor cage that all of the dogs at the shelter shared. I spent a lot of time in this corner, thinking. No other dog wanted to even be around me, they were always avoiding me. Almost as if they would catch some sort of disease. As I walked over to my corner, I noticed a puddle. There was no way around it, so I had to walk through it, As I walked through it, I saw something that I never thought I would see in my entire life, A tail? In my head? That can’t be! I ran inside, tears falling from my cheeks onto the cold ground, the other dogs laughing their tails off. I pushed my head through the doggy door and ran to my mother.
“Mother! Mother!” My mother turned her head around, a shocked expression filled her face.
“What is it dear, did the other dogs hurt you again?”
“Why didn’t you tell me I was deformed?” My mother's head dropped low, her voice became low and shaky.
“I didn’t want you to feel different. I wanted you to think that you were...a normal dog.” She kept her head low, but her voice was less shaky by the end of her sentence. I felt bad for my mother, I really did, But in that moment, I was just so upset that I didn’t know what to say.
The room stayed silent for a while after that, until finally I had built up the courage to ask my mother, “How long were you planning on not telling me?” She layed down and put her head in-between her paws.
“I’m not sure, maybe until you realized, but I didn’t think it would be so soon.” I scooted closer to my mother, hoping that she wouldn’t feel so bad. It stayed silent until the other puppies came inside to see my mother and I curled up in a corner. They giggled a little, more than likely thinking that we were asleep. But as soon as my mother heard the giggling, her ears pricked up and she gave them a stern look. My mother had had it with those puppies.
“What’s so funny?” She caught them off guard. The puppies faces went from happy to frightened rather quickly. “Do you think that my son is funny looking? Do you think it’s ok to make fun of someone just because they have something you don’t? Because I am putting an end to that right now. So I want every puppy in this cage to apologize to him right now and I want all of this nonsense to end NOW. Am I Clear!?” The puppies were frozen in fear. No adult dog has ever snapped at them like that before. Maybe that was a good thing. Maybe they had finally gotten some sense knocked into them. But finally, one dog after another apologized to me, and later that night, the humans that worked at the shelter gave me and my siblings a huge bone to share for the holidays. Later in the year, around Christmas time, I was given a collar, and an owner. They named me Narwhal. I now live in a happy home, where no body or animal makes fun of me.

I’m wondering when Annabel’s going to get here. I mean I’ve been waiting at the park for 6 minutes already. Also IT’S COLD! She said that she would be here at
9:00 am so that we could go pick up Eliza at 9:15, and we would get to the mall around 9:30 am around opening time. It’s already 9:07!
“Rachel where are you? Sorry that I’m late!’ Annabele cries from the two person bike.
“Phew you’re here!” I cry as I run past the swingset. “ I was worried that you bailed on me!”
“No of course not Lovie, hop in or rather climb on!” Annabele says with a grin.
“Kay,” I reply. I climb on swinging my leg over the bike seat and onto the pedals. We bike over to Eliza’s house. I get off and walk up to her house to ring the doorbell. DING DONG. Eliza opens the door.
“Knock, Knock. Ready to go?” I ask in a goofy grin.
“Yes, just need to grab my bike,” Eliza exclaims. She goes over, kisses her mom goodbye, Then grabs her bike and locks the door.
“Hi!” Annabele cheers, “You made it!”
“Yes indeed I did,” Eliza responds. “Just so you know, Muma made me pack Pork duplings in case we get hungry.”
“YAY!!!!!” I yell, “WE LOVE THOSE!”
“Uh guys let’s get going soon so we can get to the mall before it opens at 9:40 Kay?” Annabele asks worriedly.
“Sure,” we both reply. Eliza hops on her bike as I get on Annabele’s and my bike.
“Helmets on?” I ask
“Yes,” Eliza replies.
“Yes,” Annabele replies.
“Me too, so let's get going!” I say.

My name is Emily. I have a fear, it all started on a normal Friday afternoon. My BFF Caitlin and Iwere walking home from school. We got about a block away from the school when we realized we forgot our homework. So we turned around thinking that people would be there. When we got to the school the doors were not locked. We walked in and the door slams shut.
“Emmy, I’m kind of scared,” Caitlin said.
“Same. Wait… I forgot it’s Friday so there is no tutoring today.” I said. Then we heard a locker slam shut. So we walked to where the noise came from and no one was there. We were so freaked out that we ran to the door to leave and it was locked. I thought it was pretty weird since we came in and it was unlocked. So we decided to look for our lockers but there was one problem, it was dark and we could barely see.
“Emmy. I don’t know if this is the right time but, I saw someone when we walked in…” , Caitlin said.
“ And you didn’t mention it!!!!!!” I was screaming at Caitlin.
“I thought it was another student.”
“Why would students still be here?”
“Addi has tutoring sometimes, so I thought it was a tutor or something.”
“Are you stupid, there’s no tutoring on Fridays!”
“Well, I’m sorry that I’m not the best at remembering things.”
“It doesn’t matter anymore we are no longer Bffs we are just friends.”
Why? We have been best friends since kindergarten.” She asked.
I couldn’t take it anymore so I stormed away from her. We have been best friends ever since kindergarten and now I am walking away from her hoping to clear my mind of all of this. I really didn’t want to lose her as a friend but right then I just couldn’t handle it; I was terrified and I didn’t want to fight with her. Little did I know this was a mistake.
I started walking to my locker. My pace was getting faster and faster. I felt like I was being watched, maybe it was because it was dark, or maybe because I was alone, but something told me to go back and find Caitlin. It wasn’t that I was afraid of the dark, It was that I was afraid of what was in it. I was now running back to where me and Caitlin had our fight. When I heard the scream. I immediately thought of Caitlin and the person she said she saw. Was it a kidnapper? Was it a school shooter? Were they trying to hurt us? I then sprinted towards the scream thinking it was Caitlin. I was wrong. The thing that had screamed was...I didn’t know, it was pitch black. When I got to where the scream was there was nothing there, I tried to call out.
“Caitlin! Caitlin where are you?! Caitlin!” I screamed. Either she was so mad at me she wasn’t responding or the scream was someone else's. Or it could be that someone had taken her away, but that’s crazy, right? I mean no one would have taken her. Caitlin’s smart she would at least called for help, right? This was crazy why were we even here in the first place. Homework, tutoring, after school club? That’s it I have to get out of here, it’s just too creepy, Caitlin can find her way out.
“Emily….. is that you? I have been looking all over ... for you.”, said a strange voice I thought was Caitlin.
“Ya. I’m over here.” I replied.
“Over where? It’s way too dark to see anything.”
“Over by the lockers.”
“Oh okay. I will come over to you.”
“Wait,” I said hesitantly.
“What, wait for what?” The strange voice asked.
As I was thinking the voice didn’t really sound like Caitlin anymore. “Umm… I have to go to the bathroom ...really quick be right back.” I tried to run the bathroom. But I ran into something
WHAMMM
……………………………………………………………………………………………………
“Huh? Where am I? What’s going on? I can’t see. Is anyone there? Where’s Caitlin?”
I must have run into the wall when I was running to the bathroom because I don’t remember anything after that. And now I was in what I thought was a bag. Then we stopped and I felt someone grab my feet and pull me out of the bag. It was a very dark room. Then I saw someone or something start to move.
“Hello Emily,” Said a strange voice “I hope you’re prepared.”
“Prepared for what?” I replied.
“Death of course.” And right there and then I could see what was moving it was a person. They grabbed something off a table and threw at me and it hit me hard. But before I passed out I heard a scream and I thought Caitlin. Yet it was too late the scream was already getting farther and farther away. Then it was black.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………
I woke up strapped to a table and it was dead silent.
“Hello, Emily.” A familiar voice said
“Tessa?” I said
“ Yes, Emily it is me. Now, I have Caitlin and if you don’t do exactly what I say then I will kill you and Caitlin.” Tessa said.
“What do I get if I do follow your instructions?”
“ You will get Caitlin and I will set you free, maybe.”
“Okay, what do I have to do?” I asked.
“Stay as still as you possibly can.” She said.
“ Okay, then what,” I asked with no reply.“Hello?” Still no reply then I heard someone’s footsteps and I knew this was it for me. I whispered my goodbyes as they rushed in the door.
“Emily? Where are you I can’t see.” They said. It sounds like Caitlin, but it might not be her. But even if it was that strange voice before I still trusted the sound of her voice. I mean she would find me at some point so might as well.
“ I’m over here,” I said. I felt her hands touch the ropes and she started to untie them. She was being quick so we could get out of the school as fast as we can. When we got out of the room I started to smell something amazing. It was cake.
“Caitlin I think there is an exit in the cafeteria,” I told her. I was only lying so I could get some good cake. When we got to the cafeteria I saw two VERY LARGE cakes.
“ Caitlin I think the exit is behind one of those…”
“Caaaake,” Caitlin said, “Can we go over and have some?”
“Sure why not,” I replied. We walked over to the cakes and I chose the bigger one.
“Emmy, get away from the cake it is going to explode.” Caitlin yelled.
“ No, it’s not.” I replied, but right there right then it had exploded and she died that very day and me, Addi, and Caitlin Vonnahme were the only people left alive in the school that very night. Oh, and did I mention that I was the one who took Emily’s breath away that very night.
You're probably wondering what's going on. Well let me clear it up, I’m Tessa the crazy psycho. I took Emily’s breath away, and next I will take Caitlin’s. Then after that who knows who will be next, maybe it will be you.
“ Hello?” Someone yelled in the darkness “ Is there anyone out there?”

One day Izzy was getting up like every morning she went and got the mail. But today was different, there was a weird vibe coming from the mail but when she got to the last piece of mail she stopped and just stared at it. It was from someone unknown and it had no name or mailing address and when Reagan opened the envelope there was a tiny piece of paper and it said two things a phone number and...
“Don’t tell anyone about this or you will die.”
At that point, she wanted to go get her cell phone and call the please but she stopped herself she remembered the warning from the card so she didn’t. But she did go grab her phone and text the unknown number. She texted the unknown number and she said,
“What do you want with me how do I even know you or do I even know you?”
Immediately the unknown number responded,
“You can call me Blake, I want you to pay for what you and your friends did to my family.”
“And what is that?” Izzy replied.
“I want you and your friends to confess to murdering my wife, sister and my two twin girls.”
“What!?” answered Izzy. “I have never murdered anyone and if I did I would have confessed already,” texted Izzy and as she texted it she yelled, “You are delusional!”
If you want to find out what happens to Izzy go find Izzy Bauer in Comet Time she has Mr. Daniels the 6th Grade Global Studies teacher.

I rush into the big open doors of the movie theater, ready for what would become an adventure. As the door closes behind by me, my sister, Grace urges my mother to get tickets for The Match, or so she hoped. My mother tells us to close are eyes as she picks the movie to watch on the big screen. My mind floods into curiosity as we wait for our mother to tell us to open our eyes. Instead, she takes my hand and probably my sister’s and guides us to what smells of bittersweet chocolate and extra butter popcorn. She politely asks the employee for two small popcorn and a soda. As I hear the popcorn pop, I still wait for the big screen. I hear the shuffling of the popcorn getting tossed into the bag and carried away in my mother’s arms. She guides us towards our destination and tells us to open our eyes. My eyes flutter open and I see our seats in front of us. Our mother tells us to sit down and she’ll give us each the popcorn. We finally sit down and the movie starts. I see the bright lights turn dim and wait for the magic to happen. A burst of color appears and a wild crowd sits and stares. I watch the movie carefully getting every moment, and suddenly everything goes dark and I only hear the laughs of children and parents. Yet I see nothing as my eyes have gone dark and my mind blank. My dreams drift as it was only a happy memory. I finally opened my eyes and see the light seeping through my blinds and I hear the birds chirping away in our big tree in our backyard. Turns out it was only a dream or could it be a reality.
