New Jersey, as a member of the WIDA Consortium, uses the ACCESS for ELLs suite of assessments as a tool to measure English Language Learners (ELLs) proficiency in the English language. Students are assessed in four domains: Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing. Potential English Language Learners (ELLs) are initially identified through completing a home language survey and interview process. Potential ELLs are then given the WIDA Online Screener assessment in order to determine if they are eligible for English Language Support (ELS) classes. Students identified as ELLs through this process are given the option to enroll in ELS. Each spring, as required by the NJDOE, all students identified as ELLs and regardless of their enrollment in ELS, are reevaluated using the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs Online. Results of this assessment are used to recommend continued ELS, or to formally exit the ELS program.
