Honoring the Legacy of Juneteenth, Mills College at Northeastern University Presents “Black Futures (re) Defined: From Discourse to Liberation”
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Oakland, CA May 14, 2024 - In honor of Juneteenth, Mills College at Northeastern University and Community to Community (C2C): Policy Equity for All is sponsoring "Black Futures (re) Defined: From Discourse to Liberation," hosted by Dr. NNeka Allen-Harrison, Assistant Adjunct Professor of Northeastern University. Join us on Friday, June 14, 2024, 12:00 PM-5:30 PM (PST) in Lisser Hall at Mills College at Northeastern University in Oakland, CA. The event is open to all community members interested in furthering the conversation about the intersection between homelessness, employment outcomes, and solutions for social and economic justice for Blacks in the Bay Area. Admission is free and open to the public. Online registration is required at https://bit.ly/black-futures-redefined.
Attendees will view A Rising Tide, an insightful documentary by Cheryl Fabio. The film highlights the issue of homelessness in Oakland, California and Alameda County, with a focus on the impact on mothers and children of color. Cheryl is also the executive director of the Sara Webster Fabio Center for Social Justice, which seeks to elevate and support Black voices in the arts, social justice, and community development.
This event includes a dynamic panel discussion featuring documentary cast and community leaders who will delve into the root causes of these issues and explore potential solutions. The panel will engage in a thought-provoking question-and-answer session about the pressing intersection of unemployment and homelessness. A key goal is to share and discuss takeaways designed to propel attendees toward actionable social change.
The event will feature the unveiling of the 2024 C2C research report, "Bay Area Black Voices: Employment Outcomes of The Black Labor Force in The San Francisco Bay Area," by Dr. NNeka Allen-Harrison, C2C Policy Fellow and Assistant Adjunct Professor with the Northeastern University College of Professional Studies Graduate School of Education. This qualitative study investigates employment trends of the Black labor force in the San Francisco Bay Area and the role of empowerment learning in helping to improve economic outcomes for African Americans. Cheryl Fabio’s film complements Dr. NNeka Allen-Harrison’s C2C research report by situating the impact of social detriments of health, such as homelessness, with the data to emphasize the urgency for systemic change and sustainable solutions.
