PROJECT STUDY TITLE
Bay Area Black Voices: An Investigation of Black Workforce Experiences in The San Francisco Bay Area
ABSTRACT
The San Francisco Bay Area is renowned for its diversity and technological innovation, attracting skilled workers from around the world. However, despite the region's reputation for a heterogeneous workforce, data indicates that Black and Latino residents make up the majority of low-income earners. Employment disparities among African Americans exacerbate this issue, significantly impacting social determinants of health. Recent quantitative research into employment trends in the San Francisco Bay Area reveals that discriminatory hiring practices greatly contribute to income inequality in the region. Thus, this study aims to build upon previous work by examining the experiences of Black identified job seekers aged 18 to 65 who are currently part of the Bay Area workforce. The current project, guided by Empowerment Theory, expands the scope of phase I of this project by delving deeper into the experiences of Black Bay Area workers. This study integrates survey data, reflection memos, community conversations, and a Juneteenth gathering to triangulate themes and enhance understanding. Participants provided feedback on methods that would promote fair access to job inquiries. The study guided the development of a free, AI-powered employment support tool and offers a starting point for a public-facing dashboard aimed at improving the experiences of Black job seekers. The findings from Phase II present tools and strategies that inform policies, programs, and innovations designed to dismantle disproportionate trends in Black employment and unemployment, enhance economic opportunities, and support community-led futures.
A cornerstone of Phase II, the Bay Area Black Worker Resource Desk is a free, community-responsive tool designed to offer Black job seekers real-time, culturally grounded employment support. It provides both practical resources and strategic guidance for navigating racialized labor systems in the Bay Area.
