Bay Area Black Voices

Overview OF STUDY

The Bay Area Black Voices study explores the experiences of Black workers in the San Francisco Bay Area. This study focuses on addressing income inequality and workplace discrimination. This study is organized into two phases: Phase 1 and Phase 2.

PHASE 1

Phase 1, completed in 2024, examined employment outcomes for the Black labor force. This project addressed the impact of racial and gender disparities on economic insecurity amid the region's diversity and innovation reputation. This phase utilized semi-structured interviews, surveys, and reflection memos to gather insights from participants aged 18–55 and community-based organizations. A key area of Phase 1 emphasized the role of empowerment learning in improving economic outcomes. The findings informed recommendations for community organizations, educational institutions, and policymakers to expand opportunities for African Americans. Building on this foundation.

PHASE 2

Phase 2, currently in progress, expands the scope by investigating the experiences of Black job seekers aged 18–65. This phase focuses on discriminatory hiring practices and barriers to economic mobility. A central goal of Phase 2 is the development of a workforce dashboard to curate job-seeker experiences and provide actionable insights for policy changes. This phase aims to create tools and strategies for eliminating income inequality and promoting racial equity in workforce industries to empower organizations and policymakers to implement equitable, sustainable solutions. Together, these phases address systemic inequities and work toward bridging economic opportunity gaps for Black workers in the Bay Area.
