Why do we need a new Elementary School Building?

Kittredge Elementary School (KES) is a public elementary school serving the families of North Andover, Massachusetts. Built in 1949, the existing building is outdated and unable to provide the necessary facilities that are needed for today's learning environments. The building was designed to support an educational model that is obsolete and does not meet the needs of today's elementary school students and staff.

Building systems and maintenance costs are high due to many of the original building systems and components still being used. The dated envelope needs to be repaired and adds to the high operating and maintenance costs. Furthermore, the roof needs to be replaced, and has resulted in water damage throughout the building.

The existing building is not handicap accessible and does not meet current accessibility codes. Extensive renovations are needed throughout the building and entire site for the school to meet current building and accessibility codes.

In contrast, a new school will provide modern learning environments for students and staff to thrive. Classroom and learning spaces will have adequate square footage, and the design will be environmentally friendly with enhanced energy savings features.

If approved by the voters, the building is estimated to be completed by the Fall of 2029.
