Purposeful Reading of Nonfiction: Students are invited to read far and wide, finding nonfiction texts that speak to them. Readers will learn to summarize a text and identify text structure. Students will build to research teams where they will research a topic (here, we will use our social studies strand of U.S. regions) and build on the skills they developed in the first half of the unit to produce a final project together.

Information Writing: In this unit, students will write books that teach. After developing a plan, they will think about how they will answer questions such as, Who, What, Where, and Why. They will use exact names, years, and subject area vocabulary. They will write with organization and detail. This unit's focus is our social studies strand about Indigenous people of North America.
