The SAT and ACT are college admission exams that cover what you learned in high school and what you need succeed in college. The scores from either test are used for college admissions decisions and awarding merit-based scholarships. Most colleges do not prefer one test over the other.
More colleges are going test optional, but some schools still require either an SAT or ACT. Please check with the school you are applying to for specific admission guidelines. A complete, current list of test optional schools can be found at http://www.fairtest.org/university/optional.
Either way, I recommend taking the tests. Even if your college is test optional, they will still look at your test scores and might use them for merit scholarships. There is no harm in submitting stellar SAT or ACT scores even if it is not required for admission.

Digital SAT
In 2023, Collegeboard announced that the SAT® Suite of Assessments will be digital by the spring of 2024.
While the transition to digital will bring a number of student- and educator-friendly changes, many important features of the SAT Suite will stay the same. The SAT Suite will continue to measure the knowledge and skills that students are learning in high school and that matter most for college and career readiness. And College Board will continue to provide accommodations for students who need them on test day. For more information about the digital SAT, see SAT.org/digital.
