Our Philosophy Regarding Swearing and Inappropriate Language

Different families have different comfort levels regarding language. We want our gym to be a place where all students feel comfortable, respected, and included. In gym class, our expectation is that students use clean and appropriate language. 

Some of the reasons for this include:

• Students need opportunities to practice self-control and self-regulation.

• Students benefit from learning how to mode-switch (school mode vs. social mode).

• Allowing swearing is not fair to students who do not want to hear it. 

• The language we use affects the environment around us and contributes to the culture of the class. 

• Students benefit from learning how to communicate effectively without relying on inappropriate language. 

We view school as an opportunity to practice the skills of self-control, situational awareness, and adapting behavior to fit the setting. 

Learning when and where certain language is appropriate is an important life skill that will serve students well in school, the workplace, and beyond.
