Goals
The ultimate goal of music class at North Little Rock Middle School is beginning musical literacy. In other words, 6th Grade students will be improvising, reading, notating, and composing music at a basic level. This is accomplished using Dalcroze along with the Orff method. In addition, students will learn about basic styles of music, composers, and instruments, and their place in the world, culture, and history.
Students should have already been:
• developing the basic skills of moving and playing to the steady beat,
• developing the use of their natural singing voice (light and high),
• developing an enjoyment of music.
In 6th grade, concrete skills and knowledge are taught, all the while reinforcing the above skills.

Students will:
• learn basic rhythmic and melodic notation
• learn about the elements of music
• learn about composers and their music
• study different styles of music (folk, classical, world, etc.)
• learn Garage band tech. basics and create a song
• learning basic singing techniques
Classroom Supplies
-Pencil
-1 subject notebook (very important to keep up with notes!)
-Girls- Handsanitizer (extra XP/GP)
-Boys- Box of tissues (extra XP/GP)

Since this class is a nine week course we have condensed the curriculum by week. This may change. With that being said, please be flexible.
Procedures:
Procedures:
1. Students will dispose of gum, candy, and other edible substances prior to entering the room.
2. Students will enter the room, put all non-music items away on the back of their chair, get materials, and go to their seat.
3. Students will use pencil sharpener before the tardy time if needed or when there is a free time.
4. Students must stay within their assigned seating area. Space is very limited.
5. Students communicate at level of a zero ( or no talking) at the sound of the bell
6. Students are silent when teacher begins to approach the center of the room and participating when activity begins.
7. Students are expected to participate to the best of their ability.
8. Students will leave their seats only after they have obtained permission to do so.
9. Students are responsible for going to the restroom between classes. Any student having a medical condition must bring a note from a parent.
10. Students will talk only after they have raised their hand and been recognized by the teacher.
11. Folders or equipment must be put back in order before the bell.
12. The teacher, not the bell, will dismiss students.
Grading
Grading
The members of the North Little Rock Middle School Choral Department know that being in music doesn’t necessarily mean an “easy A.” Grades are an important part of music education, and it is important for each member to be acquainted with the expectations of the NLR 6TH Grade General Music.
Grades will include but are not limited to the following:
Daily Participation/Classwork (40%)
Daily grades will be determined by attitude, respect, cooperation, effort, sectionals, sight-reading, attendance, improvement, and Bell-agenda writing.
Homework/ extra assignments (15%)
This component varies with length of class assignments and homework.
Assessment (45 %)
An assessment will include taped music tests, individual sight-reading tests, written/online test, and written/online quizzes. The General music member will be evaluated on knowledge learned during class. Notes taken will benefit if the student studies the material during class and at home(100 points)
● Chromebook - Each student will be assigned a Chromebook this year. It is very important that each student takes care of their Chromebook. Most classroom assignments will be done electronically with the use of Chromebooks. All electronic assignments can be accessed off campus. Students will use the same log in to get into the “Google Classroom” after school hours on any device.

My long term goal is to get a keyboard lab for the 6th grade campus and to be long-term members of a composition and library website called musicplayonline.com
