When a child is first learning a new language they need to see other people communicating that way. You can help your child learn to use their new AAC language by using it yourself! Check out the video below to learn more.
Modeling helps both you and the AAC user learn the system. It helps to increase motivation and it shows that the AAC system is a valid way of communicating. Children will not learn to use a communication system on their own - as many people as possible NEED to model as often as possible!
“Model and Move on”
We are NOT expecting a response from the child when we are modeling. We need to provide access to consistent, robust language and modeling and support for many, many years for our AAC users before we jump to any conclusions about their ability to learn and use language. We give babies years of language before we expect them to talk and use language. AAC users deserve the same opportunities.
