The two primary courses in the Skilled Trades Program offered here at PWC include Skilled Trades 1201 and Residential Construction 2201. Design and Fabrication is also included in this stream of Technology courses. Clicking on the Course Titles will take you to the Course Descriptors.
Skilled Trades is an introduction to the designated trades in this province and the inter-provincial Red Seal trades. It looks briefly at the structure of the trades, including the formal schooling aspect of common core courses, and trade specific courses. A significant part of the course focuses on 6 construction related trades: Carpentry, Residential Electrician, Plumber, Lather, and Painter-Decorator.
Students examine each trade and develop rudimentary knowledge and skills. Construction projects that span the trades serve to emulate some aspects of on-the-job experiences.
Residential Construction is an experiential course where the majority of a student’s overall grade is based on the projects they complete in the Workshop. We aim to cover a variety of trades in this course that focus on house construction, including Advanced Framing (openings and roof systems), Roofing (asphalt and wood systems), Window/Door Installation, Exterior Cladding (ie vinyl and wood siding systems) Planning and Flooring.
Students will also cover skills that are common across all trades, such as reading and drawing blueprints, estimating materials and supplies required for a project, creating customer invoices, occupational health and safety, and working with different measurements and measuring tools.
Design and Fabrication 1202 provides an introduction to design and the design process. Students will develop products using a variety of drawing tools and computer-aided design (CAD) software and then create their designs in the fabrication lab. Working in small and large groups, students will experience the process of design, product formulation and fabrication common to industry. The hands-on portion of this course will constitute upwards of 60% of the class time.
