All courses below are eligible for the Fine Arts credit under graduation requirements
This is a hands-on course where all students are expected to perform musically and let those skills grow. It is meant to be done in a relatively individual setting within the class, while also allowing for small group collaboration to develop those performing skills. It doesn't matter the level of performing skills when a student enters the class. They can be a beginner or an advanced performer. As long as they are willing to learn and grow these skills
While working on these performing skills, students will work on music theory/reading skills and be given the tools to learn how to read music.
Evaluation will be done through very individual methods of assignments and class performances/videos.
The course is designed to study and appreciate music over three distinct areas:
- historical periods, from classical music to current popular music
- genres/styles of music and its various forms (pop, jazz, musicals, film scores, etc.)
- geographical/cultural differences in music, with a particular focus on NL.
This course gives a great opportunity to listen and study different styles of music over the above subject areas,
There is no heavy performance component in the course, but students may be given the opportunity to experiment with different performance practices. Evaluation will be done mostly through written projects and journal entries.
Ensemble Performance 1105/2105/3105
This is a single credit students can receive for participating in the school's Concert Choir and/or Concert Band. It is a rehearsal and public performance based environment where the groups will prepare regularly for performances throughout the school year. Rehearsal (class time) happens outside the regular school day at 8:00 am - 8:45 am, and would be an extra credit students would receive beyond their regular course load. Concert Choir meets Monday and Wednesday morning, Concert Band meets Tuesday and Thursday morning.
Membership in the ensembles is automatic. For Concert Band, students must demonstrate the ability to already play their specified instrument which they should have received instruction from their elementary and/or intermediate schools.
Evaluation is based on active participation in rehearsals and performances throughout the school year. Course number is based on the current level of the student.
