Speaking and listening are the foundations of human ability to interact with the world around us; we are creator and consumer, together at once. It's no wonder that our first words are one of the most exciting milestones of growing! We learn so much about one another through engaging in dialogue; speaking and listening allows us to connect.

Writing and representing involves being a producer of texts for an audience - sometimes that audience may be very personal and limited and sometimes it may be very public and unlimited. When we are producers of text, we consider the purpose for the text and the audience we have in mind. It provides an outlet for us to be expressive and creative and it provides a window to our thinking.
