In this unit, students will describe relations in a variety of ways, including words, tables, graphs, equations and arrow diagrams. They will develop rules to determine whether a relation represents a function. Students will identify the independent and dependent variables, the domain and range of a function and will be introduced to function notation. Students will further explore into more detail the characteristics of linear relations using tables, graphs and ordered pairs. They will be introduced to the rate of change of an equation that represents a linear relation. The connection between rate of change and slope will be addressed in the next unit. Students will be introduced to horizontal and vertical intercepts. They will use rate of change and the vertical intercepts to identify linear functions. It is important to note that students will not be exposed to the ‘slope-intercept’ form of a line until the next unit.
