East Point Elementary
Virtual Library Learning Commons
Welcome to East Point Elementary's Virtual Library Learning Commons. My name is Ms. Sweetapple and I am the Teacher Librarian here at East Point. Throughout this website, I have included some activities that you can try at home with your families.
When you visit me at the library, I will be here to help you by recommending books you may be interested in. If you are looking for a book but can't seem to find it, you can let me know and we will do our best to order it as part of our library collection. Happy reading!

Here are some fun STEAM activities you can try at home!
Coffee Filter Flowers
Materials:
Coffee filters
Washable markers
Baking sheet
Scissors
Spray bottle
Pipe cleaners
Procedure:
Flatten round coffee filters, and draw colors in circles, patterns, or even scribbles! Make a rainbow on one with all the colors or stick with just complimentary colors.
Place the colored coffee filters on a gallon size zipper bag or metal baking sheet pan and then mist with a water spray bottle. Watch the magic as the colors blend and swirl. Set aside to dry.
The last step in your coffee filter flower bouquet is a stem. Once they are dry, fold them back up and round the corners if desired. Pull the center together just a touch and tape with clear tape to make a flower. Wrap a pipe cleaner around the tape and leave the remaining pipe cleaner for a stem.
Making a Rain Cloud
Materials:
Shaving cream
Clear jar
Water
Container of water dyed blue (you must dye the water so it will be seen when it falls through the rain cloud)
Medicine Dropper
Procedure:
Record your observations throughout the experiment.
Fill the jar nearly to the top with the plain (non-dyed) water until there is only about 5 cm of space between the top of the shaving cream and the top of the jar.
Squirt shaving cream on top of the water in order to make the “cloud.” You can allow the shaving cream to fill up over the top of the jar for a fluffy, cloud-like look.
Use the medicine dropper to drip blue water onto your rain cloud.
Continue adding blue water to your cloud. Eventually the cloud will become saturated enough to start “raining.”
After completing this experiment, explain your observations to a family member. If you like, you can also email me with your observations. Have fun!
What are you reading right now?
A good book can bring you on a great adventure. I recently started to re-read the Harry Potter series. These are some of my all time favourite books. What have you been reading? Let me know through Twitter. Be sure to mention me in your tweet using @mssweetapple.
Here is a research project you can work on at home:
Awesome Animals
Today is a great day to take a virtual field trip. Follow the link to view some awesome animals at the San Diego Zoo: https://kids.sandiegozoo.org/index.php/videos
Here are some fun activities to extend your zoo adventure:
Choose one of the animals you observed and research 5 interesting facts about the animal. Record your facts and share with a family member.
Choose three animals you observed and write a fictional story. Remember to give the characters names and include a detailed beginning, middle and end.
If you choose to complete these activities, I would love to read them. Send them along to me at allisonsweetapple@nlesd.ca
