June 3rd Message from Ms. Steeves!

Hi everyone! I hope you are all doing well! It's hard to believe we are at the end of our school year! It's certainly been a different one! I've really missed seeing you all, playing instruments and games with you, and I've really, really missed hearing your voices sing.

So this week I'm only sending along one activity that reminds me of you. Please watch and listen to One Voice Children's Choir singing "Memories" by Maroon 5. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

https://safeYouTube.net/w/HbrJ

I'd like to say a special farewell to our grade 6 students. I feel so lucky to have been your music teacher through the years! I wish you all the best in junior high!

Have a wonderful summer everyone! I can't wait until we are back together again making new memories!!

May 26th Message from Ms. Steeves!

Hi everyone! I hope you are having a good week and getting outdoors to play a lot! On days when you're stuck inside, try some of these music activities!

Sing along with Blue Rodeo in the Great Canadian Singalong. The song is called "Lost Together". Why do you think they chose this song for the virtual singalong?

https://safeYouTube.net/w/h64H

Create! Have fun exploring and creating.

Spring is Here!!

https://safeyoutube.net/w/A1sH

Story time! "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" is a story/song about the alphabet. Grab an instrument or anything you can use to tap a rhythm and play along on the chorus (chicka chicka boom boom!)

This week's show (Wednesday, 11 am) features principal bass player Frank Fusari and the battle of the Basses - double bass vs electric bass! May 20th Message from Ms. Steeves!

Hi everyone! I hope you had a nice long week-end! Here are a few music activities you can try this week. Have fun and stay safe!

1. Sing! Are you tired of being home and not seeing your friends? These musicians were feeling the same way and wrote a song about it - "Gotta Be Patient". Sing and dance along with this catchy tune and let your spirits be lifted.

2. Get moving! Here is another body percussion tutorial from Cristian Mejia from Costa Rica.

3. Story time! Listen to a reading of the book "Because". It's about how one thing causes something to happen, and then that thing causes something else to happen! (yes, there is music in this story!)

4. Rhythm and Recess with the NSO (Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra)! Today's show (Wednesday, 11 am) features principal violist Kate Read who will be exploring the composer Bach's life and music! You can view on their Facebook page or using the following YouTube link: http://www.youtube.com/c/NewfoundlandSymphonyOrchestra

If you have missed previous Rhythm and Recess events, all are accessible through the YouTube link.

Hello everyone! I hope you are all doing well. Below I have just a few fun Music activities that you may want to try at home!

- Here is a great YouTube video for moving and singing. It is with a teacher named Miss Katie, she also has some great other videos on her channel if you want to check it out :)

Stretch and Sing:

Here's an action song that we've done in class before called Shake Your Sillies Out! The Learning Station has tons of fun videos to dance and sing along with.

Last but not least, why not try a fun Musical Scavenger Hunt at home? Look for the following things around your house:

1. A CD or Cassette Tape

2. A toy that sings or plays a song

3. Any instrument

4. A music symbol or note of any kind

5. Headphones or Earbuds

6. Something that could be played like a drum

7. A microphone or picture of a microphone

8. A movie where the characters sing

9. Any device that can play music

10. Find a member of your family that will sing you a song

11. A place that could be used as a stage

12. Something that reminds you of music class

13. A book that plays songs or has music notes

14. Find music anywhere in your house (TV commercials, movies, radio, etc.)

15. Find something that makes either a high sound or a low sound

Have fun and feel free to send me any pictures of different things you may find on your scavenger hunt :)

May 12th Message from Ms. Steeves!

Hi all! Here's a bunch of new music activities to keep you busy! As always, there is no pressure to do them - these are suggestions only. Music is a great activity that keeps our minds engaged, our creative energy flowing, and our hearts full! Enjoy!

1. Listen to the Radetzky March by Johann Strauss at https://safeYouTube.net/w/rPfC

Choose any or all of the following activities:

Move around your house as if you are leading a marching band. ♫♬♫♬

Create movement that matches the different sections of the music. Listen for the parts that are quiet and the parts that are loud. ♫♬♫♬

Draw a picture that matches the music. It could be just shapes and colours. ♫♬♫♬

Make up a pattern of ta’s and ti-ti’s. Play along with the music. Change the pattern when the music changes. ♫♬♫♬

Make a list of the instruments that you hear in the music. ♫♬♫♬

If this music was part of a soundtrack to a movie, what would be happening in the scene? ♫♬♫♬

Find three interesting facts about Johann Strauss. ♫♬♫♬

2. Play a game of hot and cold hide and seek using a familiar song! You will need at least 2 players for this game. Choose an object (i.e. small toy, spoon, pencil). Have one person leave the room or close their eyes while the other person hides the object. When the object is hidden, the person can return to the room or open their eyes. Sing a familiar song (i.e. Happy Birthday, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Jingle Bells) to help the person find the object. If they are far from the object, sing softly. As they get closer to the object, sing louder and louder (not yelling! ). Take turns hiding and finding the object with someone in your household!

3. Move to "Believer"! This is a fun routine you can do with a beachball or basketball, maybe even outdoors...soon! Maybe you could make up your own routine! I would love to see it!

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sCVB3YFUSSHmIYdRmd8pbzpVRYbVcdn2/view

4. Music Games! Check out some fun music learning games at this website:

https://pbskids.org/games/music/

Which one did you like the most?

5. Rhythm and Recess with the NSO (Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra)! Tomorrow's show (Wednesday, 11 am) features concertmaster and principal violinist Heather Kao! You can view on their Facebook page or using the following YouTube link: http://www.youtube.com/c/NewfoundlandSymphonyOrchestra

If you have missed previous Rhythm and Recess events, all are accessible through the YouTube link.

*MUSIC MONDAY CONTEST*

In addition to the many activities Coalition Canada are preparing for Music Monday on May 4 (https://coalitioncanada.ca/musicmonday/en/home-2020-online/), the MSIC (Music Special Interest Council) have a special contest just for K-12 students in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"Hey, NLESD students! How are you making music at home? Share a picture or video of you making music at home (on Twitter or Instagram) and use our hashtag #MusicMondayAtHomeNL and you will be entered to win a $25 gift card for iTunes/Google Play."

Some extra information:

- Students should ask permission from their parent/guardian before submitting pictures or videos.

- If students don't have a social media account, they can ask their parent/guardian to share the picture/video instead.

- If students don't feel comfortable sharing their face or voice, they don't have to! Things like a picture of your music-making space or your instrument, drawing some music notes, sharing your favourite song, etc., will all be counted as an entry as long as it includes our hashtag, #MusicMondayAtHomeNL.

- Posts on Facebook will be included, but it is more difficult for us to re-post these since our main sharing account on this platform is private. We will monitor the hashtag on Facebook to be safe.

- One entry per student.

There will be 10 prizes awarded at $25 each.

- Contest winners will be RANDOMLY selected using an online generator.

- Winners will be contacted + shared on our social media pages (FB, Twitter, Instagram) on May 5th, 2020.

- Winners will have the option between iTunes or Google Play.

- Prizes will be sent digitally to the best of our ability.

- If we are unable to reach a winner by June 5th, 2020, we will re-draw for their prize.

- The contest is open now and will finish at 11:59pm local time on May 4th, 2020.

Please let us know if you have any questions. We can't wait to see the many ways students are making music at home!

Here are some music activities from Ms. Steeves on April 21!

3. Sing “The Rainbow Connection”. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about this song since I sent home the “rhythm rainbow” activity. It’s one of my favorite songs!

2. Percussion play-along to the Can-Can

No percussion instruments at home? You can use things like boxes, cans, and cutlery!

https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=IyhsTdfEL1E

3. Story time

Listen and watch The Music in Me. If you want, share a picture or video of you expressing the music in YOU by playing an instrument, making sound with something around the house or dancing to the music.

4. Easter!

Go to the musicplayonline.com site, click on the “units” link (should be on the left side), then click on “Easter”. You will find lots of songs and activities. Don’t worry about the grade level categories as they are just a rough guideline. I often use the same song with many different grades! One of my favorites is “Easter Bunny Hops Along”. The person playing the “Easter Bunny” hides an egg during the song while everyone else closes their eyes. At the end of the song, search for the hidden egg!
