Our Idea

Our idea to add these mosses to the habitats is by a moss tube. This will consist of an open tube with a hatch on each end. It would also have a small box atop the tube containing the electronics and weights at the bottom to allow it to sink to the riverbed. A water sensor will be put on it, elevated above the tube to open the two hatches once submerged. Inside the tube will be moss, soil and spore samples. The current of the river will then take the moss, and spores then send it down stream. Since the Limpopo basin has relatively slow currents, the tube would be left for a few days to allow the moss to travel and spread. A GPS tracker attached to the electronics would allow for the tube to be retrieved and reused. The tubes can be deployed by boat, or by hand and the cheap cost allows for mass deployment in extreme areas. The moss can take from 6 weeks to 2 months to grow, but after that it can be left on its own.
