How to Get a CA Driver Permit if You are Under 18 Checklist
You must be at least 15 ½ to get a permit. To obtain a permit you must:
Complete driver education (available for a fee online).
Complete a Driver License or Identification Card Application (DL 44) including your parents' or guardians' signatures.
Provide your social security number.
Present an acceptable birth date and proof of legal presence document.
Present acceptable residency documents. (for example, mailed sent to you)
Submit proof completion of driver education.
Make an appointment online for your DMV visit.
If you are under 17 ½, your permit is not valid until you have your first behind the wheel driver training with an instructor.
If you are 17 ½ you can obtain a permit without completing driver education or driver training.
