December STEAM Book Challenge

FROM THE PUBLISHER

You've been waiting all year long, and now it's finally Christmas Eve! Is this the year you'll finally catch an elf? Start a new Christmas tradition with this hilarious children's book from the creators of the New York Times best-seller How to Catch a Leprechaun!

"It's Christmas Eve! Hip hip, hooray! Yes, Santa's coming 'round.

He's bringing toys to girls and boys in every house in town."

"Some kids have tried to catch him, but Santa's fast, you see!

So they've set their eyes on a smaller prize, and now they're after me!"

CREATE YOUR OWN ELF TRAP

Challenge:

Your challenge is to plan, design, and create your own elf trap. Be sure to use the Engineering Design Process. Click here for the steps.

Materials:

Anything that you would like! Be creative! You may use recycled items or items that you have at home; such as, legos, shoe box, popsicle/craft sticks, milk carton, empty water bottle, paper towel rolls, pipe cleaners, straws, string, etc.

You may even choose to simply create a drawing or a sketch of the trap.

Extra challenge: write down the steps as to how the trap will operate to catch an elf.

Goal:

Make sure that the elf trap you design is stable enough to hold an elf.

Guidelines:

You may bring your elf trap to the library, for display, any day before December 19th.

To qualify for potential presentation opportunities at the district's EXPO in February:

  • Take pictures or videos to share and document your design process - share them with Mrs. Joseph through email (sjoseph@nisdtx.org) or Twitter (@hasletelemLib and @HasletElem).
  • You may also use hand written or typed documentation to share your design process. If you hand write or type up your design process, please be sure to bring a copy to Mrs. Joseph.

GOOD LUCK HASLET EAGLES!!
