The world is growing and developing, and so is bacteria. Although researchers are doing their best to create a safer earth, and a healthier planet, not all of this is on them. Antibiotic resistance prevention and protection is the job of every one of us -- that you and me. By knowing the causes, we can discover how to prevent.
What Causes this?
- Over prescription - Doctors are sometimes at fault because they too over prescribe.
- Using leftover medications - When you don't finish your prescription and decide to use it "some other time," you are putting your health at risk because bacteria will continue to multiply and become resistant to it.
- Not finishing your prescription- When your doctor gives you a specific time to take your medication, take all of it. This is because if you take only some, it will only make you feel better for a short time. However, the bacteria inside of you will continue to multiply.
- Poor hygiene- If you do not wash your hands after you use the restroom or touch dirty materials, you increase your chances of being infected and needing to take antibiotics.
- Sharing medications- When you share your medications with your friends and family, you put yourself at risk for increased antibiotic resistance.
Viral infections that should not be treated with antibiotics:
- Colds
- Flu
- Most sore throats
- Most coughs and bronchitis (“chest colds”)
- Many sinus infections
- Many ear infections
