We have two classes in Year 1, the Caterpillars and the Bumblebees. Each class has a class teacher and a full time teaching assistant.
We know just how important it is for children to learn through play, so just like Foundation Stage the classroom is divided into areas of learning for children to explore and learn. To develop skills and knowledge further the teachers set the Year 1 children challenges linked to their directed teacher led lessons, consolidating and enhancing what has been learnt. This is a real opportunity to develop independence, skills of negotiation and co-operation whilst working alongside their friends.
At the beginning of the year the children work in small groups with the teachers and teaching assistants. This gradually develops over the year towards larger groups and whole class teaching as part of the transition into Year 2.
Of course there are lots of opportunities to learn outdoors in the dedicated Year 1 outdoor area as well as on the big playground with trim trail and climbing stack.
