This section contains the nationally approved templates for the centrally processed adult and children and young people’s surveys for 2024/2025. The section also contains the Easy Read and Visual Impairment accessible survey versions.
All Regional Research Delivery Network (RRDNs) and Delivery Organisations are required to use these approved surveys and are asked to not edit the question wording or any other text elements or the rating scale and not to add or remove questions. This is to reduce variation and increase the usefulness of the data.
Annually RRDNs will edit these templates to produce the localised versions of PRES that are rolled out across their respective regions.
Important: To count towards national PRES response targets, Delivery Organisations should contact their RRDN Lead to obtain the official locally adapted versions of PRES for use each year.
A long-term ambition is for everyone in an NIHR-supported study to be offered PRES and given the opportunity to feedback on their experience of participating in research.
Part of this ambition is to break down barriers to completing PRES by offering PRES in a range of formats (e.g. paper and online) and having versions of PRES tailored to meet the needs of particular types of research and participant groups.
In agreement with the National PRES Advisory Group, the current alternative versions of PRES have now been launched:
Easy-read versions for people with learning difficulties, who are neurodiverse, whose first language is not English, or who have lower levels of literacy
A large print version of the adult survey
Both versions are available through the links above.
If none of the nationally approved versions or local versions of PRES are appropriate for your research study or your participant group then speak to your RRDN who will raise this with the Research Delivery Network Coordinating Centre (RDNCC).
The RDNCC plans to develop a centralised online version of the national PRES. RRDNs and Delivery Organisations are therefore advised not to make a significant investment in new online infrastructure for local PRES delivery.
RRDNs may develop online versions of PRES for rollout across their region using existing online survey platforms - these must match the questions, wording, and layout of the nationally approved versions of PRES and make use of the NIHR corporate branding
RRDNs should work with their local data controller to ensure surveys are in line with the General Data Protection Regulation and Information Governance policies of their host organisation
Online versions will need to be submitted to RDNCC for a light touch quality check before implementation
Most major digital survey platforms (e.g. Qualtrics, Survey Monkey, Snap, etc.) support the use of visually labelled scales like the five-point smiley face scale used in PRES
Where RRDNs are using platforms that do not support the use of visually labelled scales, for example, Google Forms, a simple numeric scale with verbally labelled endpoints is permitted as per the example shown on this page
Other than information in the FOR STAFF USE box, all questions should be optional to complete to replicate the same experience as a paper-based version
Example of how to display a rating scale for PRES where use of the smiley face scale isn't possible
