The Participant in Research Experience Survey
Introduction
The Participant in Research Experience Survey (PRES) has been developed by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network Coordinating Centre (CRNCC) and measures the experiences of participants in health and social care research. PRES achieves this by asking individuals to give feedback on the research they have taken part in.
The survey outcomes describe:
The participants’ views on direct interactions with the research delivery teams and the environments the research takes place in
A range of factors relating to the design of the research itself.
The survey is publicly available on this site so that any study team may use it. Partner Organisations of the CRN’s fifteen Local Clinical Research Networks (LCRNs) are supported to deliver PRES, by their respective LCRN. An overview of PRES and a link to PRES reports and case studies are available on the NIHR website.
Further support
This website is managed by the CRN Coordinating Centre (CRNCC) to provide LCRNs and Partner Organisations with the information they need to successfully deliver PRES. If you are not part of an LCRN and wish to use PRES, please contact PPIE team crn.ppie@leeds.ac.uk as we may be able to offer support through our national PRES network.
Quote from 2022-2023 PRES Respondent
“I was always treated as an important patient and made to feel my progress was being carefully monitored and recorded. I have had several telephone calls from medical staff checking up and measuring me and always with great courtesy.”

Quote from 2022-2023 PRES Respondent
“Research nurses and doctors have been amazing and so supportive. Always understanding when my little boy has been unwell or difficult when taking the medication. They helped to settle him. They have made it such a positive experience that he is always excited to come to the hospital. The care and service is outstanding and I always feel he is in safe hands. I can always reach with any concerns I have.”
