Leadership Domain

The Leadership Domain is represented by a single Element and points users to the NHS Leadership Model and Framework, which provide a consistent approach to leadership development for staff in health and care irrespective of discipline, role or function, and represents the foundation of leadership behaviour that all staff should aspire to.

This Domain applies to the whole research workforce whether you have formal leadership responsibility or not. The opportunity to explore the leadership Domain in the context of a role will ensure the whole workforce can understand their role in leadership as they coordinate their own work and that of their peers. It also means clear alignment with colleagues across the service and benefit from wider leadership initiatives. For those with formal management and leadership responsibilities, the IWF recognises the pivotal role that leaders have in creating positive practice environments.

A variety of frameworks and models are used across the NHS to develop and promote effective leadership. Their emphasis is on leadership as a collective responsibility, where every person can contribute to creating safe, high quality and compassionate care regardless of hierarchy and formal levels of responsibility. The IWF includes reference to NHS Leaderships Frameworks and Models. The Leadership Framework aims to ‘equip and encourage people in NHS-funded roles to deliver continuous improvement in local health and care systems and gain pride and joy from their work.’ and is made up of 9 leadership dimensions as follows:

  1. Inspiring shared purpose

  2. Leading with care

  3. Evaluating information

  4. Connecting our service

  5. Sharing the vision

  6. Engaging the team

  7. Holding to account
