What is Cultural Awareness?
Cultural Awareness describes the knowledge , understanding and skills researchers need to:
Design research projects that do not unnecessarily exclude people from ethnic minority communities taking part
Approach people from ethnic minority communities about taking part in research
EMRI Initiatives
Cultural Competency Training
We have developed an online Introduction to Cultural Competency module which can be accessed via NIHR Learn and NIHR Open Learn (for people unable to create an NIHR Learn account).
Working with the Race Equality Network, Bradford, a co-produced Cultural Competency course was developed with members of the EMRI group and a Research Champion. The course covered the legal framework relating to equality, diversity and inclusion and course attendees were tasked with considering how the legal framework applied to their roles.
EMRI Reverse Mentoring Scheme
Our scheme consists of a series of focussed conversations between a person from an ethnic minority background (Mentor) sharing their knowledge, lived experience and skills with a health and care researcher (Mentee) to inform the inclusiveness of their research projects going forward.
Scheme participants are required to:
attend an online induction session
meet with their mentor or mentee six times, each meeting will focus on a specific topic and resources are provided to support these meetings
participate in a midpoint review and an end of scheme evaluation
If you would like to be informed when we invite applications for our next Reverse Mentoring Scheme, please contact us.
