patient and public involvement

We were committed to involving patients and the public throughout all stages of BASIL to ensure our research remained focused on the needs of older adults who are living with long-term health conditions.

Patient and Public Involvement prior to BASIL

Prior to BASIL, our Patient and Public Involvement members helped to co-produce the MODS support package. You can find out more about MODS here.

BASIL adapted the co-produced Behavioural Activation support package for use during the COVID-19 pandemic. The support therefore had a focus on social isolation as a result of COVID-19 restrictions.

The infographic opposite lists some of the key ways our Patient and Public Involvement Advisory group helped to inform both MODS and BASIL.

Adapting the support package for BASIL

We are fortunate that the individuals who helped with MODS agreed to be consulted about BASIL. In April 2020, the BASIL Consensus Group met and discussed a number of things.

A consensus group is a group of individuals who come together to discuss and reach consensus on key elements of the study. The BASIL consensus group was made up of BASIL researchers, healthcare professionals and individuals with lived experience of long-term health conditions. The group discussed the following:

PPI Advisory Group Meetings

We start every advisory group meeting with a “You said, We did” presentation to remind our members of the value of their contribution and the impact it has had.

BASIL PPI Advisory Group Meeting 1

Held in April 2020, during this meeting we discussed the Participant Information Sheet which was updated from the MODS programme, as well as gathered feedback on the BASIL study logo and acronym.

BASIL PPI Advisory Group Meeting 2

Held in August 2020, during this meeting we provided an update on BASIL and discussed infographics designed to aid recruitment. We also discussed GP being informed when a participant completes or withdraws from the BASIL trial.

BASIL PPI Advisory Group Meeting 3

Held in May 2021, during this meeting we provided an update on BASIL and discussed content for the Patient and Public Involvement page on the BASIL website, co-designed a poster for the Primary Care Mental Health Conference 2021 and talked about potential training and other PPI opportunities.

BASIL PPI Advisory Group Meeting 4

Held in October 2021, during this meeting we provided an update on BASIL and outlined plans to restart MODS. We discussed materials and processes that would be good to take into MODS. We also discussed a potential PPI paper and wanted to gauge if there was interest from members being involved.

BASIL PPI Advisory Group Meeting 5

Held in January 2022, during this meeting we provided an update on BASIL and MODS. We discussed our plan to send out a 12 month follow up reminder postcard. PPI advisory group members provided feedback about how and when to send the postcard as well as its design and content.

BASIL PPI Advisory Group Meeting 6

Held in December 2022, during this meeting we provided an update on BASIL and MODS. We discussed our findings from the BASIL Pilot trial and how we were going to inform our BASIL pilot participants of the results. This involved reviewing an infographic we had designed to share the results.

Primary Care Mental Health Conference 2021

On Wednesday 26th May 2021, the Universities of York, Bristol and Keele came together virtually for the Primary Care Mental Health Conference via Zoom. The BASIL team presented a 3 minute "elevator pitch" on the study "Through a PPI lens". This was presented in collaboration with members of the advisory group. We wrote a blog about the day which can be found here.
