How to Succeed with CBE

Do you have what it takes? These tips will help you succeed in a CBE program.

Manage your time.

There are not as many due dates and deadlines in CBE courses; sometimes, the only due date for assignments is the term's end. This doesn't mean you can complete the entire course in the last two weeks of the class.

If you regularly set aside time to work on the course and manage your time wisely, you will finish the course within the semester. Refer often to the pacing plan and track your progress.

Review instructions and rubrics regularly.

Review assignment and exam instructions and rubrics before you dive in so that you can keep your goals in mind as you work through the module content.

Practice, practice, practice.

CBE means that you work at it until you get it. Revision is normal and not a reflection of your ability as a learner. Each course has materials to help you practice before the summative assessment and you can revise or study more before attempting them again.

Ask for help.

Communicate regularly with your instructor and success coach. They will reach out to you to check on your progress - respond to them and keep them up to date on how you are doing in the course.

Also, don't be shy about reaching out to instructors if you have questions about the content or assignments; they are there to help! It's much faster to get their help if you are confused than guess what something means or is expected.

Get ready to learn online.

Many CBE courses are either hybrid or fully online courses. We encourage you to review the Brightspace Toolbox if you have not already. It provides tips on how to be successful in hybrid and online learning environments with the Brightspace LMS.
