Definition
Co-curricular activities are activities that contribute to a student’s academic learning experience offered outside of regular class time. Co-curricular learning activities, programs, and experiences reinforce the institution’s mission and values and complement the formal curriculum. Co-curricular activities are optional learning opportunities, promoted by faculty, that are aligned with a learner’s program of study.
Committee
The Co-Curricular Assessment Committee is responsible for:
Ensuring at least one co-curricular activity is identified on every Program Curriculum Map.
Recommending assessment methods across co-curricular areas.
Creating a structure for gathering and archiving which co-curricular activities are occurring for each program and discipline.
Sharing co-curricular assessment data with college leadership and accreditation bodies.
Faculty will assess co-curricular learning in alignment with program or discipline evaluation. Each co-curricular activity must be tied to either a PLO (program learning outcome), CLO (common learning outcome), or ELO (education learning outcome). Each program or discipline will collect and analyze their own co-curricular data, results, and determine areas of improvement.
Co-curricular activities are assessed by the instructor teaching in the course or program. Instructors may utilize any assessment of their choosing, including but not limited to a reflection paper, a pre/post-test, classroom discussion, or a survey to evaluate gains in student learning attributable to the co-curricular activity. The method of assessment and the incentives offered to students (points) and determined by the program. Programs can include co-curricular assessment data in their five-year program/discipline review process.
The co-curricular reporting form allows faculty to identify which learning outcome (ELO, PLO, or CLO) their co-curricular activity supports. At this time, instructors are not required to submit evidence of student learning through the co-curricular reporting form.
Data Tracking
All data collected through the form will will be sorted by program or discipline in the co-curricular learning submissions spreadsheet and will be made accessible to the faculty, deans, the co-curricular committee, and other stakeholders. Student support services (Student Activities, Library, Career and Transfer Services, etc.) can use the data to identify which programs and student populations they serve in a co-curricular capacity.
