Week of March 2nd
Hi Families!
We had another great week!
A Note From Ms. Cap:
I am sorry to report that I am absent again this week. Many of you already know I have had several week-long absences due to travel to Virginia to care for my mom, who has had major health issues this year. This time, unfortunately, I am having significant issues with my back and am not sure what the course of treatment or progress will be. I am hoping it will be something that can be quickly managed, but we are also planning for consistency for the children in case my absence is for a longer term than anticipated. I continue to be the person doing all of the ELA lesson planning so consistent strategies will continue for the children, and I communicate with the substitute and team throughout each day. I am also attending and holding meetings remotely and continue to be the person who is responsible for student academic progress in reading and writing. I hope you know I despise being absent and will return as soon as I am able to. Likewise, we are already working on gaining a long-term substitute teacher if one should be needed. Thanks so much for your patience.
RALEIGH FIELD TRIP
Permission slips and payments are currently due. Here is the payment link again, and parents who are accompanying us as chaperones riding the bus need to also pay $62.50. Chaperones will need the Level 2 Volunteer Training which includes a criminal background check. This training needs to be completed immediately, as it takes some time for the security clearance process. The link for the background check is listed at the bottom of the site. It must also be renewed every year.
.
Reminder for ELA
Please continue to support your child with homework reading assignments from The Sign of the Beaver this week. The chapters for each evening will be noted on the homework page again. You may support your child by reading it together if your child is a struggling reader, or you may follow up with questions about the reading to ensure that your child has done a thorough job reading and thinking about the text independently. Your child will use his/her Gmail login info on the purple homework folder to log into Google Classroom, and our classroom code is located on his/her homework page again.

More About ELA
NEXT WEEK, we will have a shift in reading homework! For the first time ever, your child will have a nightly reading assignment from a specific book, called The Sign of the Beaver. Your child will be expected to read the assigned chapter(s) each evening and come to class prepared for a related discussion and activities. This book will be available online in Google Classroom for your child to access with technology at home, and the required chapters will be indicated on the homework page each evening as a replacement for some of the 25 minutes of nightly reading. We will begin the book together in class this week! Please ensure that your child completes each reading assignment diligently. You may support your child by reading it together if your child is a struggling reader, or, if your child is already fluent, you may follow up with questions about the text to ensure that your child has done a thorough job of reading and thinking about it. Please also ensure that your child does not simply read the whole book in one sitting, but is ready each day focused on only the information from the evening before. A form will also come home with your child for you to sign in order to indicate if you will need paper copies. Please request them only if your child cannot access technology at home. If you prefer to purchase your child his/her own paperback to read or download the book to a Kindle, the Amazon link is here. Again, this will begin NEXT WEEK.

Week of January 26th
Hi Families!
We had another great week of learning last week!
Important Information
Mark your calendars for our RALEIGH FIELD TRIP this quarter on Tuesday, March 17th! More information and field trip forms will be forthcoming. Buses are now reserved, and the Raleigh agenda is set! We are now waiting on a link from our treasurer to send out to everyone for payment.
Yearbook luck line orders are due! Forms went home in your child’s folder last week.
Tuesday was our second NC Check-In for math. Results and score reports from our recent MathFact Lab assessment will be sent home after all testing is complete.
Need some additional help with math? Check out these resources!
Zearn is aligned with Eureka math. I’ve reset students’ lessons to “Mission 5: Equivalent Fractions” to help them understand and retain key math concepts we are covering in class. Students who complete 2-3 lessons a week will not only see growth in their math scores but also gain a boost in their confidence!
Struggling with multiplication and division facts?
MathFactLab is a strategy-focused program designed to help children develop number sense and a solid grasp of basic math facts. Through consistent practice, students achieve fluency and often automaticity. The program is most effective with short sessions of 10-15 minutes, three times a week. Unlike game-based programs, MathFactLab does not use reward tokens; instead, students are motivated by their own progress as they advance through the levels. Mastering multiplication facts is essential for effective problem-solving in 4th grade and beyond!

Week of January 20th
Hi Families!
Last week was an excellent first week back!
Important News
Please mark your calendars for our RALEIGH FIELD TRIP this quarter on Tuesday, March 17th! We have already confirmed the date with the Raleigh Capital Area Visitor Center, and we are working on reserving the tour buses by sending in our deposit this week! Additional forms and information will be forthcoming once we have a final quote on bus and lunch costs. We need parent volunteers, so please plan to attend, as well as ride the bus with us!
Please complete and return your child’s Intent Form to maintain your child’s placement at Codington next year, if you have not already done so! Forms went home last Monday in your child’s homework folder. They are due TOMORROW!
Our new homework routine has continued this week! The RAZ Kids online program will continue to be used each week as part of our evening homework routine for two nights a week in place of your child’s 25 minutes of independent reading time. The other night(s) will continue to be for your child to select appropriate books of interest to read. They may also choose books from the RAZ program if they would like for these additional nights – or may continue to use library books or other new books at home.
When using the RAZ program, children should locate the book within the My Assignments section to carefully read, then listen to, and finally test on the book. For higher reading levels, the “listen” option will not be available for some assignments. When students test, they should look for an icon to click in the upper right corner of the screen to access the book so they can use the 2E strategies (evidence and eliminate) to answer the questions. When they submit a test, a score should display on the screen for them to record on their homework page, and they should also go back into the test to review their incorrect responses. Students may choose extra books to read for homework practice or extra practice at home within the Level Up section.

Week of January 12th
Hi Families!
Happy New Year! We are excited to begin our third quarter of fourth grade!
Thanks so much for your assistance with our fun end-of-quarter celebration – and especially for the wonderful class gifts, as well as all the other presents, notes, and treats! Our entire team definitely feels very appreciated, and we are so thankful for your kindness and support!
Important News
Your Intent Form to maintain your child’s placement at Codington came home tonight in your child's folder! Please sign and return it ASAP to hold your place at Codington for next year!
Our homework routine is changing this quarter, beginning this week! We now have access to the RAZ Kids online program and will be using it as part of our evening homework reading routine! For two evenings a week, our 25 minutes of independent reading time will be structured using a leveled RAZ reading assignment for your child to complete online at home. The other two nights will continue to be for your child to select appropriate books of interest to read. Our fluency and spelling routines will continue, and our fluency routine will reduce to utilize one-minute reading intervals. Please review your child’s homework page carefully for details.
MClass reading and Aimsweb math assessment score reports and the results of our second NC Reading Check-In and first NC Math Check-In (SchoolNet Assessment) will be sent home with report cards this Thursday!
About this Quarter
In Ms. Cap’s class…
- Our new Wit and Wisdom module for the quarter is called “The Redcoats Are Coming!” and it is an exciting one that integrates some American history! Students will continue to build fluency, comprehension skills, reading concepts, writing strategies, and new content knowledge using a variety of fiction and nonfiction selections, including text passages, poems, short stories, readers’ theater activities, and books. Our books include George vs. George: The American Revolution as Seen from Both Sides, Colonial Voices: Hear Them Speak, and The Scarlet Stockings Spy, as well as the novel, The Sign of the Beaver. A collection has also been created in Epic to support this theme, and our reading within our new RAZ program will also provide some connections to this content, as well.
In Ms. Couch’s class…
- We are reviewing our multiplication and division strategies this week in class, but skipping the Eureka lessons involving customary measurements (those are not 4th grade standards), so this week’s homework will start on Wednesday with Lesson 21. We are wrapping up Module 3 with remainders, estimating, and problem solving. Our unit test will be next Wednesday, January 21st! Next week, we will also start Module 4 - Foundations for Fraction Operations.

Hi Families!
We had another great week! Wednesday is a staff workday, and there is no school for students.
Progress Reports
Progress reports were sent home on Friday. Please sign and return them. Also, keep in mind that we are building routines as we progress through the year. Some children’s grades may improve as they become better able to manage organization and quality work requirements. Likewise, our curricula increase in complexity as the year progresses, and some kids may struggle with content later, even after they have started the year strong. Please continue to monitor your children’s progress through Infinite Campus.
Upcoming Assessments
The Aimsweb system should be available soon for our beginning math assessments.
Important Reminders
Please continue to check the purple homework/communication folder each evening with your child. We have added a section to the homework page to record incomplete work from class, as needed.
Please be sure your child has water every day – it’s very hot outside, and the water fountain does not provide enough to drink when we have been outside for PE or recess.

Week of August 4th
Hi Families!
We had another excellent week together!
Back to School Night
Please join us for Back to School Night this Thursday, August 7th, at 5:00 pm or 5:45 pm for information about your child’s teachers and curricula! For those who are unable to attend, we will email the slideshow presentation with next week’s newsletter.
Homeroom Parent

More About Homework
We will continue with our existing homework routine. Your child should read the fluency passage on the back of the homework page aloud to you for two minutes. Please mark any errors and the stopping point with a different colored pen or pencil each evening and record the total number of words read correctly (WRC) on the front of the page. There are currently two levels for fluency. If your child’s passage does not seem to be a good fit, please let Ms. Cap know. Your child should also practice the assigned spelling list for ten minutes each evening. The focus of spelling practice should be on using the known sound combinations and rules to spell, syllable by syllable. Children should read each word and practice it by saying each syllable and writing the sounds in it without looking back at the word again until it is complete. Please also continue to have your child complete the assigned pages in the Eureka Apply homework book each evening, and then tear them out to return each day in the homework folder.
Assessments
Beginning-of-year assessments are in progress! Ms. Cap is administering all reading assessments through the mClass program, and Ms. Couch will administer all math assessments through the Aimsweb program once it is up and running. Aimsweb assessments are administered online and are completed by students independently, while most of the MClass reading assessments are administered one-on-one. We will share the results once all assessments are completed.
Important Reminders
- Please check the purple homework/communication folder nightly together with your child to help with organization and responsibility. Please do not discard anything in the folder without checking with your child first to see if it needs to be completed and returned to school.
- Please send in your child's headphones, if you have not already (one with a cord and not a Bluetooth connection).

Week of July 28th
Hi Families!
We had a great first full week together, and the children are settling into the pace of fourth grade routines very well! Reading assessments are already in progress.
Back To School Curriculum Night
We will host a team Back to School Night next Thursday, August 7th, in two sessions: 5:00 pm and 5:45 pm! Come to learn more about the curriculum and teaching practices in each class!
More About Homework
We will add the final two homework components of fluency and spelling to our existing routine this week. First, your child should read the fluency passage on the back of the homework page aloud to you, timed for two minutes. Please mark any errors and the stopping point with a different colored pen or pencil each evening and record the total number of words read correctly (WRC) on the front of the homework page. Your child should also practice the assigned spelling list for ten minutes each evening. Spelling practice should be done in writing, but can be done creatively with chalk outside, on whiteboards with markers, or in other written formats. Your signature indicates that all tasks have been completed, and there is not a requirement to submit anything written except for the signed homework page each week and the completed math pages each day.
Important Reminders
- Students should bring their purple homework/communication folders back and forth between home and school each day. Please help your child to get into this routine, and please check the folder daily with your child for homework directions, other information, and unfinished work to complete. Please do not discard anything in the folder without checking with your child first to see if it needs to be completed and returned to school.
- We have time for a daily snack, so please send an easy-to-eat one for your child each day. We are not permitted to give students any food other than cafeteria food before 1:00 pm, so we are not able to maintain a back-up set of snacks.
- Please send in a refillable water bottle each day.
- Please also send in your child's headphones, if you have not already (one with a cord and not a Bluetooth connection).
