The scholarships listed below are awarded to seniors at New Hanover High School.
SECU People Helping People Scholarship
Deadline: January 24, 2024
SECU Foundation takes an active role in assisting communities across North Carolina because we believe in “People Helping People®.” to support this commitment, the People Helping People scholarship was established to help North Carolina public high school students attend college.
• Current senior at a North Carolina public high school (Each NHCS high school will be awarded 1 SECU Scholarship)
• SECU member or eligible for membership through a parent/guardian
• North Carolina resident and eligible for in-state tuition
• Accepted to attend one of the 16 UNC system universities as a full-time undergraduate student
• Demonstrated scholastic achievement with a 2.5 or higher unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale
• Exhibited leadership, excellence of character, integrity, and community involvement
• Filed FAFSA as part of the application

The Killian Family Old Well Scholarship
Deadline: February 24, 2024
To be awarded to a New Hanover High School graduate
To be awarded every even-numbered year beginning 2012
The approximate amount is $3500 annually and can be renewed each year during the recipient’s undergraduate study, provided the student has at least a 2.75 GPA for the freshman year and a cumulative 3.0 each subsequent undergraduate year. The UNC Committee on Scholarships, Awards, and Student Aid will determine eligibility after the initial award.
To be eligible for the scholarship a student must:
Be admitted to UNC-Chapel Hill
Otherwise meet the standards for merit-based scholarships at UNC
Be selected by a committee of faculty and staff from New Hanover High School in the Spring of each award year(beginning in 2012)
In addition to excellence in academics, eligible students must also exhibit leadership through school activities, especially athletics (all 3 of the Killian children were NHHS athletes). Service inside and outside the school community is also expected along with demonstrated strong character.

New Hanover High School (NHHS) Alumni Organization Scholarships

There are three scholarships the New Hanover High School Alumni Organization has designated specifically for New Hanover High School graduates attending CFCC – two for students in the Career and Trade programs, and one for students in any curriculum program at Cape Fear Community College.

New Hanover High School Alumni Organization Endowed Academic Scholarship
There is one scholarship for NHHS students attending UNCW. It is a $1,000 award to a New Hanover High School graduate attending UNCW. It may be administered at $500 per semester. The application is open December 1 through the priority date of March 1. Contact email is scholarships@uncw.edu

Edgar C. Garrabrandt II and John R. Garrabrandt Memorial Healthcare Scholarship
Deadline: March 15, 2024
Eligible persons are graduating high school seniors at New Hanover High School in Wilmington, NC. Students must have a weighted cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher and must be planning to pursue a 4-year degree as a full-time student at an accredited public or private college or university. Applications will be evaluated on academic merit, community extracurricular involvement, and potential for success. Preference shall be given to students interested in pursuing health-related careers. The Wilmington Kiwanis Club Scholarship for UNCW
Deadline: March 22, 2024
The Wilmington Kiwanis Club selects two recipients for its 2023 Memorial Scholarships. The winner receives $3,300 per year for four years and the runner-up receives $1,650 for the first year only. These scholarships have an overall value of $ 14,850 and are awarded to two deserving seniors, from New Hanover County Schools, who will be attending UNC-Wilmington. The Wilmington Kiwanis Club has been offering New Hanover County Schools’ seniors scholarships to UNC-W since 1964. Each year, a seven-member committee interviews the students to demonstrate that they are worthy, capable of doing college work, and have the motivation to be successful. The committee selects the students based on the following criteria:
- Must be a graduating senior from a New Hanover County public school.
- Must have applied and be accepted to attend UNCW by the start of the upcoming academic semester.
- Must be a legal resident of the USA
- Remain at UNCW until graduation to receive the full scholarship.
- Demonstrate a need for financial assistance.
- Demonstrate the academic abilities to perform at the college level.
- Exhibit the character traits to be worthy and would be successful if selected for the scholarship.
- Be a well-rounded, active student with participation in both extracurricular and community service activities.
- Display a willingness to have worked to have earned some funds for college.
- Willing to support the Wilmington Kiwanis Club in its major fundraising event--Kiwanis Pancake Day or its alternate

The James Rippy Memorial Scholarship (Local NHHS Scholarship)
Deadline: March 28, 2024
Purpose: Award a NHHS senior student an athletic merit scholarship to attend the institute of higher learning of his/her choice. $1,200, non-renewable
Qualifications:
Good teammate, student, and school citizen who participated in football and/or track and field at New Hanover High School
Participant in at least one school-based extracurricular club or activity
Volunteer in the community
Will attend an institute of higher learning in the fall, but playing a collegiate sport is not required

Must have a 2.0 GPA or better in core subjects

Must plan to pursue an undergraduate degree in a cultural arts-related field, including but not limited to the field of visual arts, performing arts and/or art education

The Brody Winslow Aloha Scholarship
Deadline: Friday, April 15, 2024, by 5:00pm
A $500 scholarship awarded to a New Hanover High School college-bound minority senior who has exhibited genuine friendship. The scholarship is awarded in memory of Brody Winslow. Brody, a former New Hanover High School student, was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Hilo, Hawaii in April of 2012. Brody was attending Hawaii Community College at the time of his death. Winslow, who wore the No. 12 jersey, was on the 2009 soccer team at New Hanover High that went to the state championship. He is remembered most for his sense of humor, though. "His laughter, jokes, and facial expressions were something that made a memorable impression on everyone he met."

Class of 1972 Hoggard/NHHS Scholarship

The combined Williston Class of 1972, J.T. Hoggard, and New Hanover High School (NHHS), are elated that you have chosen to further and obtain a higher education, equipping you for today’s society’s work force. We will assist you financially. The Class Motto is, “Making A Difference.”

William H. Craig Scholarship
Deadline: May 5, 2024
$2,000 award to be awarded to a senior in need of financial assistance who will be attending college next year. This student must exhibit solid character in and outside of the classroom. He/she must model kindness, motivation, and integrity. This student serves a role model for future generations regarding the betterment of humankind. This student has the strong desire to contribute to his/her community and will strive to give back in the future to his/her community. The William H. Craig Race for Life Committee will select one nominee from each of the following high schools: Ashley, Hoggard, New Hanover, and Laney.

NHHS Retired Staff Senior Scholarship Fund
Deadline: May 13, 2024
Value of scholarship $1500.00)
Criteria:
Must be a graduating senior from New Hanover High School.
Must have been accepted to an institution of higher learning. Attach copy of acceptance letter to institution where you will be attending, including address of said institution.
Must submit a written recommendation from a NHHS staff member, including perceived need.
Must submit a typed essay of at least 200 words on the topic “What Being a Wildcat Means to Me.”
Must attach a current transcript including SAT/ACT scores.

This scholarship is for students in any program at CFCC. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and be graduates of New Hanover High School. The scholarship will be awarded based on financial need.
