New Hanover County Schools wants to celebrate and recognize our Seniors for their scholarship earnings during the 2023-2024 school year. Seniors and their families can submit their scholarship information @ NHCS Scholarship Report Link.  Please report your scholarship offers each month!


The scholarships listed below are awarded to seniors at Laney High School.

SECU People Helping People Scholarship

Deadline: January 24, 2024

SECU Foundation takes an active role in assisting communities across North Carolina because we believe in “People Helping People®.” to support this commitment, the People Helping People scholarship was established to help North Carolina public high school students attend college.

Eligibility requirements:

• Current senior at a North Carolina public high school (Each NHCS high school will be awarded 1 SECU Scholarship)

• SECU member or eligible for membership through a parent/guardian

• North Carolina resident and eligible for in-state tuition

• Accepted to attend one of the 16 UNC system universities as a full-time undergraduate student

• Demonstrated scholastic achievement with a 2.5 or higher unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale

• Exhibited leadership, excellence of character, integrity, and community involvement

• Filed FAFSA as part of the application

The Wilmington Kiwanis Club Scholarship for UNCW

Deadline: March 22, 2024

The Wilmington Kiwanis Club selects two recipients for its 2023 Memorial Scholarships. The winner receives $3,300 per year for four years and the runner-up receives $1,650 for the first year only. These scholarships have an overall value of $ 14,850 and are awarded to two deserving seniors, from New Hanover County Schools, who will be attending UNC-Wilmington. The Wilmington Kiwanis Club has been offering New Hanover County Schools’ seniors scholarships to UNC-W since 1964. Each year, a seven-member committee interviews the students to demonstrate that they are worthy, capable of doing college work, and have the motivation to be successful. The committee selects the students based on the following criteria:


- Must be a graduating senior from a New Hanover County public school.

- Must have applied and be accepted to attend UNCW by the start of the upcoming academic semester.

- Must be a legal resident of the USA

- Remain at UNCW until graduation to receive the full scholarship.

- Demonstrate a need for financial assistance.

- Demonstrate the academic abilities to perform at the college level.

- Exhibit the character traits to be worthy and would be successful if selected for the scholarship.

- Be a well-rounded, active student with participation in both extracurricular and community service activities.

- Display a willingness to have worked to have earned some funds for college.

- Willing to support the Wilmington Kiwanis Club in its major fundraising event--Kiwanis Pancake Day or its alternate

Wendy Tysinger Stallings Scholarship (Local Laney Scholarship)

Deadline: March 22, 2024

Wendy Tysinger Stallings graduated from Laney High School in 1993. While at Laney, she played on the Laney High School Tennis team, participated in extracurricular activities, and was active in her church. She attended UNC Chapel Hill and Campbell Law School and currently serves as President of TPI Event Solutions. Mrs. Tysinger Stallings would like to recognize two senior athletes at Laney High School who have not only excelled academically at Laney, but have also been actively engaged in their school, community, and church while playing on a Laney sports team. The purpose of this scholarship is to award two Laney senior student athletes scholarships to attend the institute of higher learning of his/her choice.

Amount: $2,500, non-renewable

Qualifications:

● Good student, school citizen, and teammate

● Current Laney senior athlete with at least two years playing LHS sports

● Minimum 3.0 Weighted GPA

● Participates in at least one school activity and volunteers in the community

● Active in church and/or church related activities such as Young Life or Fellowship of

Christian Athletes

● Attending an institute of higher learning in the fall 2024. Proof of acceptance is

required for issuance of the scholarship check, but playing a collegiate sport is not

required.

Shine Bright Dante Brown Lee Scholarship Award 

Deadline: April 15, 2024

The “Shine Bright” scholarship award exists to disassociate the stigma of special needs students and to also recognize them for their personal achievements. Laney teachers will nominate students in the SDA program at Laney High School for this award. 

Amount: $500


Al O’Briant Scholarship Application -Laney Athletic Booster Club

Deadline: April 15, 2024

Purpose:  Award a Laney senior student-athletic merit scholarship to attend the institute of higher learning of his/her choice.  

Amount:  $1500, non-renewable

The Buccaneer Excellence Scholarship Award

Deadline: April 15, 2024

The Buccaneer Excellence Scholarship Award is a $500 scholarship for a current Laney senior with a GPA or a 3.0 or higher who plans to attend a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in the Fall. A list of HBCU is below.

THE MONIQUE PARKIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Deadline April 15, 2024

Monique Kathleen Parkin was a 2004 graduate of Laney High School. She was loved by many and was always willing to help anyone without hesitation. She was an advocate for non-profit organizations, especially the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).  She, unfortunately, could not help herself, and she lost her battle with depression and took her life in 2012.  Her family and friends have since started a local non-profit, the U’Nique Community Fund, to help bring awareness and prevention to suicide.  The Fund contributes money to Coastal Horizons (including sponsoring The Power of the Purse and the Coastal Duck Derby), Wilmington Health Access for Teens (WHAT) Program, and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.  The goal is to prevent this tragedy from happening to another family and let people know that there is always help available, no matter the cost or situation. Parkin have established these memorial scholarships in her memory. There are two scholarships available. The value of the first scholarship is $1500, and a second scholarship valued at $1000 - one scholarship per applicant. THE DARREN TYRONE DICKERSON SCHOLARSHIP FUND 2024

Deadline: April 16, 2024

Darren Tyrone Dickerson was a 2000 graduate of Laney High School. He was a true leader who believed that sharing his blessings was not only a duty but a pleasure. He took great pride in mentoring fellow students as a tutor and later young kids as a basketball coach. While matriculating at Laney, he was an outstanding student and athlete. At the conclusion of his high school career, he received a basketball scholarship which allowed him to continue his educational journey. In honor of his outstanding basketball career, he was posthumously inducted into the Laney Athletic Hall of Fame on  January 26, 2018. In order to keep this spirit alive, we, the family and friends of Darren Tyrone Dickerson have established this memorial scholarship in his memory. The value of this scholarship is $1000.  All applicants must meet the following criteria:

_____ Possess a 2.5 GPA or higher

_____ Exhibit leadership in school spirit

_____ Involvement in extracurricular activities and/or community service.

_____ Acceptance to a post-secondary institution

THE D.J. MCLEOD FOUNDATION MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Deadline: April 26, 2024

DarNell J’Vonne McLeod was a 2023 graduate of Laney High School. He was loved by many and had a strong belief in Faith, Family and Football. DJ was a great teammate and had a personal drive and work ethic as a student-athlete and a young teenager battling cancer that helped galvanize his community. DJ taught everyone to take each day with a positive attitude and to keep working hard no matter what the situation. DJ showed us the true meaning of what it is to be #DJSTRONG. His fearless and courageous spirit demonstrated that “You don’t have bad days, just different types of good days”.


The DJ McLeod Foundation was started in honor of his fearless and courageous spirit. DJ was an inspiration to his fellow teammates and other student athletes that weren’t necessarily the star athletes on the team but showed up every day wanting and willing to work hard. The student athlete who is dedicated, motivated and comes in with a smile no matter what the situation, just as DJ continued to do throughout his cancer journey. 


In order to keep the DJSTRONG spirit alive, we, the family and friends of DarNell J’Vonne McLeod have established this memorial scholarship in his memory. The scholarship value is $500, and we will award a $500 scholarship to one (1) Female and one (1) Male senior at Laney High School. The scholarship is open to any student-athlete who will be attending a 2 or 4-year college.

The Benjamin Lancaster “Speak Life” Ripple Scholarship

A one-time $5,000 to be awarded to 2 Pender and/or New Hanover County seniors who have created and carried out an act of kindness in their community that sparked a “ripple effect” and lasting impact on that community and the people in it. This scholarship is open to any students with these qualifications:

*Current high school Senior in Pender or New Hanover County

*Participates in a club, school program, sport, and/or other extracurricular activity

*Must have an acceptance letter from a qualified College or University with an enrollment into their 2024-2025 school year

*Hold a minimum GPA of 3.0

I am happy to announce that the 2024 Remember Carly Rae Scholarship program is open for NHCS seniors to apply. I have included a link to the scholarship application below. Last year we awarded $9000 in scholarships to 9 NHCS 2023 graduates at 7 schools. We will be awarding that minimum dollar amount this year. The final donation numbers will hopefully cause that amount to increase. The Alex Highsmith Family Foundation is proud to continue this scholarship program in 2024.

Laney High School English Department Scholarship

Deadline: May 8, 2024

 The English Department would like to honor one deserving student with a scholarship in memory of our friend and former colleague, Mrs. Marie Harris.  This scholarship will be sent directly to the college of the recipient’s choice in the fall.  This scholarship is open to any member of the Class of 2024 who will be attending a 2 or 4-year  college in the fall of 2024.

_____  show a commitment to Laney’s English Department through active participation in the highest classes  at Laney

The purpose of the NC Blueberry Festival Scholarship Program is to provide post‐high school academic scholarships to North Carolina students. Eligibility:
