DJ was a great teammate and had a personal drive and work ethic as a student-athlete and a young teenager battling cancer that helped galvanize his community. DJ taught everyone to take each day with a positive attitude and to keep working hard no matter what the situation. DJ showed us the true meaning of what it is to be #DJSTRONG. His fearless and courageous spirit demonstrated that “You don’t have bad days, just different types of good days”.
The DJ McLeod Foundation was started in honor of his fearless and courageous spirit. DJ was an inspiration to his fellow teammates and other student athletes that weren’t necessarily the star athletes on the team but showed up every day wanting and willing to work hard. The student athlete who is dedicated, motivated and comes in with a smile no matter what the situation, just as DJ continued to do throughout his cancer journey.
In order to keep the DJSTRONG spirit alive, we, the family and friends of DarNell J’Vonne McLeod have established this memorial scholarship in his memory. The scholarship value is $500, and we will award a $1,000 scholarship to one senior at Laney High School. The scholarship is open to any student-athlete who will be attending a 2 or 4-year college.
