Classroom Expectations

Behavior:  Behavior expectations are enforced in the classroom, in the hallways, in special area classes, in the cafeteria, on the playground, and in any location inside or outside on the premises of our school.  School-wide expectations follow the R.O.P.E.S. acronym:

Communication:  Daily communication about important dates and events is done through the weekly newsletter.  This is posted each week on our class website under the "Newsletters" tab.  Any important paperwork from the school is sent home the night it is received in the blue folder.  Please check this folder each day.  You may contact me at any time via email at kathleen.mcdonough@nhcs.net.  If you need to reach me by phone, you may call the school at 910-798-3311 and dial extension 70171.  I am unable to receive calls during school hours, but if you leave a voicemail, I will return your call as soon as possible.

**Any transportation changes should be called in to the office.  I am not always able to check my email during the day and do not want to miss any important changes.  Thank you!**

Homework:  Each week, take-home books will be sent home.  Please begin by reading these books to your child; when he or she is ready, they can read the book to you!  Please complete the sheet each time you read a book and return all books on Friday.  New books will be sent home on the first day of school of the new week.  In addition to take-home books, a math sheet may be sent home to practice current math skills and strategies.  Lastly, core words will be sent home on a weekly basis.  Please practice reading these words with your child.  When he or she is able to read all of the words on the list, a new list will be sent home.  Thank you for supporting your child's learning at home!

Classwork:  Classwork is sent home the last day of each week.  Please review this work with your child and keep it at home.  If there are any questions about the work we are doing in class, please do not hesitate to ask!

Belongings:  Please be sure that all items that belong to your child that are sent to school have his or her name in them.  This includes backpacks, lunch boxes, water bottles, coats/jackets, and other personal items.  We do not want anything to get misplaced or lost, and if it does, we want to be able to return it!  Thank you.

Volunteering:  In order to volunteer when a teacher is present, you must possess a Level I volunteer certification.  You may obtain this by visiting the New Hanover County Schools website or by visiting the front desk at Anderson.  Once you have your certification, you are ready to volunteer!  Please contact me if you are interested in volunteering in our class or our school!

Your child's behavior will be indicated in the behavior folder each night.  Flying above the hive is BLUE and flying in the hive is a STAR.  Other colors will be indicated as stated above.  Students are rewarded for making positive behavior choices.  Our school-wide currency for rewards is Admiral Bucks.  Students can earn these at any time, from any one, for good behavior choices.  Students may collect their Bucks and visit the cart on a weekly basis to purchase rewards and coupons for special treats.  In class, students receive stickers for positive behavior and good choices.  If your child has had a fabulous week and is "flying high," he or she will visit the treasure box!
