Transitioning to Middle School
Welcome Future Hurricanes!
We know a lot of different emotions arise as you and your student transition from 5th to 6th grade. We are dedicated to assisting and supporting you on this new adventure.
COURSE OFFERINGS
CORE CLASSES
All 6th graders will automatically be scheduled for 6th grade Math, ELA, Science, Social Studies, & ½ year Health/PE classes. 6th graders are generally not assigned classes, lunch, or recess with 7th or 8th graders.
ELECTIVE CLASSES
6th graders have two 50 minute elective classes in their schedule each day. They attend these two electives each day of the week for the entire semester. Therefore they have up to 4 elective classes per year.
The semester will change at the end of the second 9 weeks, typically the end of January. In the 2024-25 school year, Semester One elective classes will be taught from August 27th thru January 17th and Semester Two elective classes will be taught from January 22nd thru June 6th.
Students will have the first few days of each semester to request an elective course change. So if they get into a class and don’t like it they will have the opportunity to change it if the desired class is not full.
Rising 6th graders have a choice of either option
3 one semester electives OR Band/Orchestra and 1 one semester elective

Band & Orchestra:
Students are encouraged to try Band or Orchestra if they have any interest to do so. It is more difficult to start as a beginner in 7th or 8th grade. Band and Orchestra electives are year long. That means the student will only have an opportunity to take one additional elective. All 5th graders electing to take Band or Orchestra will be assigned to the class, therefore the student should only select their preference either Band or Orchestra. (the student does not need to put band or orchestra as an alternate choice.) Instruments may be purchased, rented or borrowed.
Vocal Music:
Students may select to take vocal music one semester or two semesters each year.
Health/ PE:
This course is considered an elective however all students are required to take Health/PE for 1 semester each year. Students who enjoy PE may elect to take PE for an additional semester by indicating it on the elective request form.
Family Life Education- Parents have the choice to select either My Life, Stepping Stones, or No Participation. Parent Signature is Required. Students participating in My Life or Stepping Stones will be pulled from their required PE class for the 10 -14 consecutive days the program is being taught.
