About Me

I am extremely excited to work alongside the staff at Holly Shelter Middle School. I joined HSMS in October of 2014.  Working with youth to promote healthy successful futures is a passion for me.
I have been a school counselor in southeastern North Carolina for 27 years.  I began my career in Pender County as an elementary school counselor and the four years prior to joining HSMS, I had the honor of working with school counselors, educators, and community organizations across the state; coordinating several prevention and intervention programs for students in PreK through 12th grade.  The experience gave me an opportunity to dig deeper into my professional goals and develop a better understanding of the multiple systems within our communities.
I was born and raised in a small farming town in Upstate New York and moved to the Wilmington area in 1996.  I received my Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Development from the University of New York at Buffalo and a Master's Degree in School Counseling from Alfred University in New York.  I have also earned National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in School Counseling.   I am married and have two beautiful daughters who attend New Hanover County Schools.

8th grade Class of 2021,

Although you are moving on to new adventures you will always be a part of the heart of Holly Shelter Middle School.  Even though we have endured many challenges the past three years I have very much enjoyed getting to know each of you.  Best wishes to you all and you know where I am if you need me.

“Believe in your dreams.  Believe in today.  Believe that you are loved.   Believe that you make a difference.   Believe we can build a better world.   Believe when others might not.   Believe there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.   Believe that you might be that light for someone else.   Believe that the best is yet to be.  Believe in each other.  Believe in yourself.”                                                                                                                                         -Kobi Yamada
