Dual Enrollment FAQ

Career and College Promise Program/Dual Enrollment Registration FAQs for New Hanover County Schools

Q1. How do I set up my CFCC account and find my username and password?

    1. Visit www.cfcc.edu

    2. Click on MYCFCC

    3. Click on First Time User.

Q2. Help! I am new and don’t even know where to start! Where do I go to register for classes?

  • Please watch this video entirely before attempting to register for classes. How to Register at CFCC. While there are many ways that you can register for classes, it is in the best interest for everyone if you use the “Student Planning-Self Service” feature in WebAdvisor. **NOTE: You must view the Orientation Video and take the quiz on a laptop or on a desktop computer. It will not work on a cell phone.

Q3. Can I still take courses at CFCC if I don’t have my license yet?

  • Yes! You can either carpool with a classmate, take a city bus, OR take an online course. CFCC does not provide transportation.

Q4. How do I know which classes to take?

  • After you log into your my.cfcc.edu account, you will need to click on “WebAdvisor” then click on “Student” then click on “Student Planning Self-Service” then click on “View My Progress”

  • Once you have done that, your pathway should show at the top. As you scroll down the page, your plan will show you which classes are available for you to take. You may only take classes within your designated pathway.

Q5. How much do CFCC classes cost?

  • CFCC does not charge tuition for high school students, but student activity, technology, and parking/security fees are charged to students. The fee total is based on the number of credits taken. Parking/security fees are not charged for online classes. Students are also responsible for purchasing textbooks. The cost of college textbooks vary, and there are used and rental options for many textbooks.

Q6. Is financial aid available to CCP students?

  • No, financial aid is only available to high school graduates.

Q7. This is my first time taking classes, what are some good classes to start out with?

  • Classes in the Fine Arts/Humanities/Social/Behavioral Arts are usually good classes to start off with. It is recommended that you take no more than two CFCC classes when first starting the program.

  • Keep in mind that you are now taking college classes, and they are different from high school classes. Many of you will be earning weighted credit for the courses you will be taking if you are in the college transfer pathway. You should treat the class as you would an AP class. All College Transfer courses carry AP weight if they are 3 credit hours or more.

  • As you view your progress page through Student Planning-Self Service, you will notice the different areas you are allowed to take classes from. You do not have to start in any specific discipline.

Q8. When are the classes offered?

  • Many of the College Transfer classes at CFCC are offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in 50 minute sessions, or on Tuesdays and Thursdays in 1 hour and 15 minute sessions. However, it is extremely important to look at all the meeting information when selecting a class. Science, math, and foreign language classes have labs that go along with the class that may occur on a non-traditional day and time or online. *Read the fine print*

  • If you are in a Career and Technical Education Pathway, those class dates and times will traditionally be longer since they are more skill-based. Many of the CTE Pathways are located at the North Campus, past Laney High School. In addition, CTE Pathway courses often follow a particular sequence from fall to spring semester, so pay close attention to the suggested terms provided.

  • Don't wait to know your high school schedule before enrolling in your CCP classes! Seats will likely be filled up if you wait until then.

Q9. Which campus will my classes be on?

  • This information will be listed when you are looking at a class. Wilmington campus is located in downtown Wilmington, the North Campus is located off of Blue Clay Road in Castle Hayne. Online classes are located online and will be accessed primarily through My Classes/Blackboard in your my.cfcc.edu portal. College Transfer classes are offered at all campuses. Most of the Career and Technical Education Pathway classes are located at the North Campus with the exception of the Nurse Aide and Early Childhood Education programs.

Q10. How do I choose my class times?

  • You want to keep in mind the bell schedule at your home school and choose CFCC class times based on that. Do not plan on driving back and forth throughout the day. Try to plan classes either in the morning or in the afternoon at CFCC to leave the other part of your day available for classes at your high school.

  • Keep in mind your tardies will not be excused at CFCC or your high school. Leave yourself plenty of time to safely travel back and forth. Ten minutes is not enough time!

Q11. I play sports, what do I do?

  • Sports-related absences are still absences at CFCC. An absence is an absence, and you are only allotted a specific number of absences per your instructor. If you know that you have to travel every Thursday for a game, don’t schedule classes on a Thursday. Maybe an online class would be a better option. Keep in mind that your CCP classes do factor into your athletic eligibility--this includes dropping or withdrawing from a class as well.

Q12. There is a message coming up that I need to have taken a prerequisite?

  • Some classes do require you to have taken a prerequisite, but most do not. If the message is telling you that you must have taken a DMA or a DRE class, you have already met that criteria by having a GPA that qualified you to enter the program. Classes that require an ENG, MAT, or other prerequisite will have to be satisfied prior to enrolling in the class.

Q13. I chose my classes and put them in the plan, but it is saying that I can’t register. Why not?

  • Chances are that you have not completed your online orientation. You must take the quiz at the end of the orientation to take off the registration hold that has been placed on your account. Once you have completed the orientation quiz, an email should be sent to your CFCC email confirming you have completed your orientation. If you’re still having trouble registering for your classes, please check your registration date and time and/or the cashier’s office to see if you have any holds placed on your account (910) 362-7000.

Q14. Which classes count as dual credit at the high school?

  • Please refer to this link to see how credits will count when being reported to your high school.

North Carolina Dept. of Public Instruction Dual Credit Allowance Chart

*Please note: CFCC classes that are 2 SHC or less will not be awarded high school credit or quality points towards GPA & class rank.

Q15. When I went to register, the classes I planned are now full. Where do I go from here?

  • Unfortunately this can happen. Once the class fills up there is usually a waitlist for the class. If you decide to add yourself to the waitlist, remember to check your CFCC email daily--you should be doing this anyway. If a seat opens in the class, you have 24 hours to claim your seat or it goes to the next person in line.

  • If the waitlist is closed, there should be an option under the class that says, “View other sections.” Click this dropdown arrow to show you the other sections that are available for this class--you can filter your results at the top of the page. There are usually a couple of different pages as well so make sure you toggle to the next page to see more options.

Q16. How can I make sure that my class registration went through?

  • To double check to ensure that your class registration has gone through, log into your my.cfcc.edu account, click on “WebAdvisor” then click on the “Student” tab. Under registration, click on “Student Planning-Self Service” then select “Go to Plan & Schedule” use the > tab to toggle to the semester you would like to look at. Once you get to the semester, your classes should be displayed and should have turned green stating “Registered, but not started” underneath the class. If the class is yellow and says, “Planned” then that means your registration has not gone through.

NOTE: While counselors do their best to work around your CFCC schedule, there may be a need for you to change your CFCC schedule before classes begin to meet graduation requirements at your high school. High school schedules are traditionally not finalized until after the current school year ends.

Q17. I registered for my class(es) and decided I don’t want to take it, how do I drop it?

  • You have up until the day before CFCC classes start to receive a full refund for your class. If you know that you do not want to stay in a section that you have registered for, drop the class as soon as you are sure. Let someone else have the opportunity to take the class that would like to be in that section.

  • To drop the class, go in just like you did for registration and instead of the register button listed under the class, the button should now say “DROP.” Click that button to drop the class.

  • If the term has already begun and you want to withdraw from a class, you must send an email to your CFCC counselor with your name, the course name and number, and your reason for withdrawing. He or she will then email your high school counselor for approval.

Q18. When are my student fees due and what happens if I don’t pay them?

  • As a CCP student you are responsible for paying your student fees. Fees are determined based on the type of classes you have signed up for and how many credits hours. Failure to pay your student fees will result in you being purged from the classes you have signed up for, thus allowing someone else to register in your place. Pay attention to the Academic Calendar and Upcoming Events section on the homepage of your my.cfcc.edu portal for these and other important due dates and deadlines. Remember, you are welcome to attend any CFCC events that interest you as a dual enrollment student.

Q19. When/Where do I get my parking pass and student ID for CFCC?

  • Once you have paid your student fees, you are able to go to the Cashier’s Office at either CFCC campus to obtain your parking pass and your student ID. Make sure to bring with you a copy of your license and a copy of your class schedule. SEE YOUR HS WEBSITE FOR SPECIFIC SCHOOL INFO

Q20. Where do I park on campus for my CFCC classes?

Q21. Does CFCC accept AP or CLEP credit?

  • Yes. Scores must be sent officially to CFCC to award credit.

Q22. What are the normal Withdrawal procedures?

To withdraw from a class, CCP students must follow the procedures listed at https://cfcc.edu/registrar/withdrawals/. Once the student has completed the online form, a Cape Fear Counselor will send them an email informing the student to get permission from their high school for the withdrawal.

Next, the student will have the high school designee (usually their high school guidance counselor) send an email directly to the Cape Fear Community College Counselor, informing the Cape Fear Counselor that the student has permission from the high school to withdraw from the class.

The high school designee will need to include the following information in their email:

  • Student’s Name

  • Student’s CFCC number

  • Course to withdraw from

  • A statement indicating they have the school’s approval to withdraw.

Next, the CFCC Counselor will send another email to the student to confirm they want to withdraw from the class. Please have the student to follow up with Cape Fear Community College Counselor if they have questions about the withdrawal process. Students who wish to withdraw after 60 percent of class hours must obtain permission in writing from their instructor and Department Chair. Permission will be granted for extenuating circumstances only. Documentation is required. No withdrawals can be requested during the last week of the semester.
