Thank you to the parents who attended the study skills workshop this week and for their positive input into the way we can further support our learners through a school and home partnership. Clive Nicholas from the Learning Support department shared a range of resources and techniques that optimise study methods including: a monthly Nexus wall planner; mind maps; one-to-one target setting between teachers and learners; flashcards; highlighting key command terms; and attending the various in-school study support sessions available prior to the final exams.

The weather in Suzhou was so cold! We think that everyone was shocked by the weather difference from Singapore to China. There was white, shiny snow and everyone was so amazed, it was some students first time seeing snow! When the ISCMS rehearsals started, everyone was excited and ready for the musical experience. It was so amazing to see some of our students make friends and enjoying themselves. Wednesday was the first day we started rehearsing (4:00 - 9:00 pm). Thursday was the first full day of rehearsal (9:00 am - 9:00 pm) and it was a full day of hard singing and playing. 12 hours! We only had one 5 hour rehearsal, but we had three 12 hour rehearsals.
The ISCMS festival was hosted by Dulwich so the rehearsals were held in Dulwich International School Suzhou. Everyday Dulwich provided a variety of yummy foods for lunch and dinner to keep us energized and excited for the day. Our concert was held in the Suzhou Culture and Arts Centre and when we arrived, everyone was ready, excited and very prepared. Over 1,000 tickets were sold and 300 students and 24 schools participated in this wonderful festival! Standing up on that stage was such a breathtaking experience and we hope to enjoy the same next year!

Saturday the 27th January was the National Finals for 'Junior Achievement Company of the Year 2018'. 12 Nexus Learners signed up to take part in this prestigious competition which involves forming a company, designing a product, and selling it. This was all completed over a 12 week period aiming to give learners an insight in entrepreneurship and encouraging the development of skills such as communication, problem solving and teamwork.
‘ULU’ was the company entry from Nexus and was represented by Alex Arguelles, Shanaya Verghese, Melanie Su, and Antonio Zdunic (with Lydia Lu supporting) at Nanyang Junior College. They all did themselves and Nexus proud, presenting their business and learning journey to the judges. It was a demanding day, requiring an interview, presentation, trade stand and screening of their advert. They did an amazing job, learnt many valuable lessons and also had a lot of fun, very proud to announce they won the trophy for best company report as well.

Nexus Secondary learners were lucky enough to have a short talk from Jeff Hui from the Young Founders School. Jeff an inspirational entrepreneur himself, highlighted the fantastic opportunities available to learners at Nexus. Courses on offer by YFS are their flagship ‘Ideation Day’ and the ‘Weekend Enterprise Bootcamp’. Jeff also elaborated on the the Internship and mentoring opportunities that are also available to graduates of the YFS programme. YFS has a passion for developing entrepreneurial skills and inspiring future entrepreneurs, I firmly believe that all secondary learners would benefit from participation.
Good luck to learners attending the Enterprise BootCamp on the 3-4th March, you will learn lots and have a chance to win the USD$1000 prize!

On 30 January, the Yr. 10 IGCSE Geography and Environmental Management learners extended their learning outside the classroom with a trip to Holland Village. Building on their understanding of key concepts and the development of primary source data collection, the learners underwent field work that included observational and social research surveys about the impact of Holland Village to Singapore’s sustainability and settlement patterns.
While the trip itself was approximately 2 hours, it was great to see our learners interacting and connecting with the local shopkeepers, patrons and the community itself. This activity also served as a practice for one of the activities for the upcoming resident trip to Vietnam.
