The calendar below shows the huge range of exciting learning experiences that were on offer this week for the United Nations Global Goals Week. Focusing on five of the seventeen goals, learners experienced many age-appropriate activities, workshops and fundraising events.
The Global Goal number 4 - Quality Education, was supported in full force on Wednesday with the Year 12 learners fundraiser. They had organised events from sponge the teacher to henna tattoos and a computer game challenge on a large screen. Primary and Secondary learners enjoyed the delicious fruit kebabs drizzled in chocolate and the home baked products which were also on sale.
It was a busy lunchtime and all for a great cause. The Year 12 learners will be travelling to Cambodia in November to continue a partnership with a school in Kong Maha in the Kampong Cham district. They have created a poster with more information about the school. The $1542 raised will be helping to develop and install a playground at the school, to enhance the learning environment for all the students who go there. Our learners will also be liaising with the teachers to create teaching and classroom resources to support the learning at the school.
Thank you to everyone for your support at the event and to all the learners who dressed up to share their aspirations of what they want to be when they grow up.
Last week 20 girls from Nexus were lucky enough to be invited to the first ever Singaporean Dare to Be Different Event. It is a charity set up by former Williams test driver Susie Wolff and Motorsport UK. Its mission is to drive female talent, inspiring the next generation to challenge preconceptions and prejudices in the world of motorsport and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). It aims to raise the curtain on a new era in which daring to do something different is praised and encouraged. Our girls were so excited to be part of this incredible event and enthusiastically participated in all activities.
First off was the challenge to build a car chassis. Next off, they were testing their reflexes and racing miniature cars. Kristin from Y7 won the Land Rover challenge on the day, for the fastest time navigating a remote controlled car on a very tricky course. This means that she was quicker than all the other girls on the day. The girls also did CPR with a real Formula 1 doctor and learned that Baby Shark is the best beat to establish a regular rhythm to when performing this life saving job. Our Nexus girls also won the Pit-Stop Challenge which saw them work as a team to change the types in the pit. It was all topped off with a buffet lunch which drew gasps of surprise from everyone attending. What a fantastic day out for all those girls who Dared to be Different. And let’s hope that soon, STEM activities for girls are not seen as different at all.

As part of the Nexus Careers and University Programme, our Year 12 and 13 learners took part in The Lion City Tour 2019 on the 18th of September at UWC-Dover where they interacted with over 135 universities from all over the world.
Universities present included Yale-NUS, St. Andrew’s University, University of Bath, University College Dublin, ESSEC, University of Waikato and Ecole hoteliere de Lausanne... to name but a few!
Learners spent time meeting university reps and gathering important information about campus life, application processes, entrance requirements and international fees. Armed with a collection of glossy brochures, the learners returned to Nexus feeling much more confident about their future endeavours. It was an incredible learning experience that has brought our Nexus learners one step closer to fulfilling their careers and university aspirations.
Ms Aine would like to say a special thank-you to Ms Ioana and Ms Paula for sparing their time and supporting this trip.

Our Year 8 Learners have been focused on the UN’s Global Goals this term. They made an early start to the Nexus Global Goals Week when they were fortunate to have the opportunity to listen to Dr Gary Tho discuss how he is contributing to the greater good by using his work as a chiropractor here in Singapore to help those in need in other countries.
Gary showed our learners how, by focusing on three goals in particular (#3 Good Health & Wellbeing, #4 Quality Education & #6 Clean Water & Sanitation) he is able to use his privileged position to direct funds and resources to help people in countries such as Cambodia and Ethiopia through the organisation Buy 1 Give 1. Gary’s presentation was interactive and engaging and Year 8 showed themselves to be an excellent audience as they listened respectfully and took on board what Gary had to say about the Global Goals and how they can help people. It was great to hear the positive comments from learners after the presentation.
