From our Head of Secondary
UN Global Goals has been a fantastic success, set against the backdrop of the global initiatives being pioneered by Greta Thunberg. At Nexus we focused on five of the Global Goals, one each day, and there were some outstanding learning experiences. From the screams of Year 10 as thousands of composting maggots were revealed, to the Year 12 learners' stalls raising money for the school they will soon visit in Cambodia, it was a fantastic week full of thought-provoking and meaningful experiences. You can read more about it here.
The Learner Leadership Team has been launched and is busy preparing for Diversity Week! The Learner Leadership team is a group of learners that are here to support the Nexus community through learner-led events and initiatives, House events and Wellbeing initiatives.
Congratulations to the newly appointed Learner Leadership Team:
Lead Learners: Carlota Pinker Rego, Tina Jiang and Niraj Nair
Lead Learner Mentors: Luca Cassin and Shanan Verly
Wellbeing Leaders: Dhruv Sharma and Deboleena Roy
House Leaders: Riccardo Perrone, Chester Chatfield, Nicole Claveria, Sophia Pinkerton, Seth Yew Kuan Yang, Paloma Cevera, Nikhil Subramani and Michael Adeney.
One of our Learner Leaders, Carlota Pinker Rego, entered the prestigious John Locke Institute History Essay competition. Her essay was outstanding and as such she was invited to attend a ceremony at Oxford University over the last weekend. Carlota received a Commendation and had an amazing experience which included attending some of the university seminars. Huge congratulations to Carlota for this wonderful achievement.
Years 7, 8 and 9 head overseas next week for their leadership/service trips. Nexus has a proud tradition of providing high quality experiences overseas and we wish both learners and accompanying teachers every success.
After a wonderful 8 years at Nexus and the Little Red Dot which we call home, my wife and I have decided that is time for new horizons. We intend to move back to Europe or the UK to be nearer to grandparents, but nothing is set in stone as yet. As Head of Secondary I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the staff team that has built Nexus from an unknown school of 300 learners into what we see today. Long may Nexus continue to prosper as it enters the next stage of development. It is a long way off before our final goodbyes in June next year, but rest assured this has been a well considered decision and we will certainly miss all aspects of school life. Our own children love Nexus and have benefited from fantastic and inspirational teachers throughout their time here. I have never before taught at a school where there has been such a strong and welcoming community with parents and teachers coming together to support their children's progress; relationships really are the key to successful learning. As a school we have a lot to complete in the next few months and we are all so excited about moving Nexus to its new site, with all the benefits that will bring.
Have a good weekend,
Peter Hart, Head of Secondary
