Welcome to the new academic year! We are so excited to have all the learners back at Nexus after the break. I am sure you will feel welcomed into the Nexus community and I look forward to meeting all of you.
It was a pleasure to meet many of you at the Welcome Evening on Wednesday. I know there was lots of interest in the Nexus Parent Group (NPG) who do so much to build the community and support the school. If you wish to get involved, whether you have 5 minutes or 5 hours available, please email npg@nexus.edu.sg and look at the NPG page in this newsletter to find out more. At the moment we would love to hear from people who have children in the Secondary School who would like to be Parent Reps. This is not onerous and is a great way to get in contact with other parents and support the school. We typically look for one or two Reps per year group. If you are interested then please email me directly on hart.p@nexus.edu.sg and I will pass on your details to the NPG.
Those of you who attended the Welcome Evening will know that we aim to give every learner the best experience through The Nexus Way which is well embedded across our community. Please see The Nexus Way overview and the headlines of The Strategic Plan 2019-20 on the Important Notices page. The Strategic Plan was constructed from feedback from all areas of the community, with data being gathered through surveys and face-to-face meetings.
We were delighted to receive another set of strong results at both IB Diploma (Year 13) and IGCSE (Year 11). The learners worked so hard to achieve some outstanding outcomes, including a highly-prized near-perfect Diploma score for Shubanghi Goel. We are so proud of all of these learners and appreciate the hard work of their teachers in supporting them so well throughout their two-year courses.
We have already heard some confirmed University Offers from our Year 13 graduates which include: National University of Singapore (NUS), University of Leeds, New York University (with scholarship), University of British Columbia, Murdoch University, James Cook University and the University of East Anglia with many besides! They have enrolled on a wide range of courses from Law to Industrial Design, from Fine Art to Business Management, from Computer Science to Economics. We wish our graduates every success as they enter higher education and urge them to keep in contact!
For some people the holidays are never a break from their work. Coach Ivan and some of our swimmers kept their focus as they entered swimming competitions around the world. Huge congratulations to Jack Cassin and Carmen Weiler Sastre for their extraordinary achievements on some of the biggest stages; you can read more about their achievements here. This very week we hosted three Olympic swimmers in our pool and it was a terrifically interactive event enjoyed by all of the swimmers, as well as their coaches!
Thank you so much for persevering through the uniform issues we have been having. I am so glad that the blue shirts are starting to percolate through the school in ever increasing numbers as the shipments get through. Your patience and understanding have been much appreciated and this is not the way we would have liked to start the school year! More information can be found here.
This is the last semester in the Ulu Pandan Campus and we are very excited about the move to Aljunied. The new building is nearing completion and we look forward to being able to share it with you with a visit in advance of the move in January.
The energy at the start of this term has been incredible, from both staff and learners, and we look forward to another excellent year of progress and high achievement.
Peter Hart, Head of Secondary School
