In order to prepare learners for the next phase of learning Year 9 Learners will be having trial exams to help them understand the process and experience sitting an assessment in the examination room in timed conditions . Please note, this is not a test of their knowledge from Y7-Y9. Instead, these will be more focussed assessments from more recent study; teachers will inform learners of the expectations and limited preparation will be necessary. No assessment will be more than one hour long and the experience is designed to give learners a sense of time management and examination etiquette. We believe this will make the transition to IGCSEs smoother for our learners as they will know how to better prepare, self-manage and meet examination expectations going forward.
Trial examinations will be between Tuesday May 31st and Friday June 3rd.

The Year 12s are currently having 1:1 meetings with Ms Nicola as part of the ‘Life After Nexus’ university and careers programme. During these meetings Year 12 learners decide on their ‘next steps’ to prepare for their next educational adventure, which they have been encouraged to share with their parents and guardians for discussion at home. They are also reminded to keep an eye on the Learner Bulletin for any upcoming webinars or opportunities that may be of interest to them!
Here are some top tips for parents from Ms Aine, who will be returning in June:
Start the careers and university process small and long before Year 12 by engaging with your child about their passions, hobbies, skills and academic strengths. These casual conversations could take place at the dinner table, over hot chocolates, the school run etc. Use them to get your child thinking about the future; help them to feel focused on their ambitions and motivated to succeed. The pathway towards university is one best shared!
Choose IGCSE and IBDP subjects that will allow your child the opportunity to get the best possible results but also meet the admissions requirements for their chosen university programme. This will take forward planning and it is recommended that you and/or your child arranges a meeting with the university counsellor to alleviate stress. It is also wise to discuss subject choices with their teachers who will be able to point them in the best direction too. Using school report data can also help to shape decision making. Remember your child might not know what they want to pursue at tertiary level at the end of Year 9 or even Year 11, which is completely normal, but choosing subjects that leave their options open is wise.
The final two years of school are particularly busy for learners - exams, internal assessment deadlines and university preparations can really snowball if time isn’t managed from the outset. Follow the recommended timeline for university research and applications provided by your university counsellor. This is a process that begins in Year 12 and the summer months are useful for finalising university admissions documentation, essay writing, college campus visits etc. Connect with your child to ensure they are attending their university counsellor meetings and ask them to share their meeting minutes and planning folders with you so that you remain in the loop about their plans and deadlines. Encourage your child to attend university fairs and learn about admissions fees, visas well in advance to avoid any last minute shocks when the offers come through. And remember, university rankings are useful to a point but finding a best-fit university for your child is what is most important.
