In Term 3, a new initiative was put into place to get the Year 7 tutor groups to read more and experience some calm and quiet before their busy day. Our four Year 7 tutor groups have been coming into the Learning Resource Hub on a weekly rotation every other week; 2 tutor groups at once. This was a joint effort by Ms. Sarah (Head of Y7) and Ms. L., the Teacher-Librarian, to encourage reading for pleasure, some mindfulness, and a time for quiet and reflection.
The learners are encouraged to look at our new books on display, read in their mother tongue, and of course, read a book of their choosing. They can come in from 8:15 onwards. Silent sustained reading is a great way to start the day, it is known to increase curiosity, strengthen attention, and make reading more enjoyable. I urge parents to model reading in the home as well. 15- 20 minutes a day is the suggested amount, of course, many read for more! Get reading!
