The company competition has commenced for a third year at Nexus! Building on the success of ‘ULU’ last year who won the award for best company report. This year we have 20 budding entrepreneurs who have signed up to take part in this prestigious program. The intensive competition runs over a 13 week period. Learners form a company, design and make a product, and finally market and sell the product. We have a total of 5 experienced Business Mentors coming in to help inspire, making this a unique experience.
The learners present back their successes, difficulties encountered and their overall learning journey to a panel of judges, at the Singapore national finals mid January. Good luck to all participants. If they are successful and win, they will go to the Asia Pacific Finals which will be held in Manilla early March. Watch this space for an innovative product or service on sale in the coming weeks. Good luck to all company members.

This week parents and learners in Years 7, 8 and 9 were introduced to the residential trips, which takes place the week before the October break. The fun-packed schedules for the trips include:
Year 7
Hiking, jungle walks, visiting a turtle sanctuary, snorkelling, kayaking and an overnight camp. All the Y7 tutors will be accompanying the learners on the trip, as well as Phase Leader, Ms Libby and Mr. Sonny. Experts will guide the learners in their day to day activities, with learners in groups of no more than 12. More fun will be had in the evenings with talent shows and beach fun. But beware - all learners will be required to tidy up after themselves, clear their plates and make their beds!
Year 8
Accompanied by their tutors, as well as Mr Graeme Massey and Mr Clive Nicholas, learners will take part in a range of outward-bound activities, such as jungle hiking, jetty jumping and fishing, and they will collaborate on a small community project in which they visit and connect with a local village. This is such a lovely experience as learners take sports equipment and teach local children how to play games. Learners will love getting close to nature as they spend one night camping in the jungle!
Year 9
This exciting camp is led by Nomad Adventures, one of the pioneers in outdoor adventure in Malaysia. Learners will take on the high ropes course, have a go at water rafting and rock climbing and go into caves on the ‘Quest of the Magic Fire’. The jungle experience is topped off with a trip to Gopeng market, and learners can select and buy their own food to cook for dinner that night. Year 9B tutor Miss Aine Gibbons will be accompanying the learners on the trip, as well as Ms Nicola Jordan and Mr Lee Wilson.
More information for parents and guardians will follow shortly and learners will be briefed in their PSHE sessions in the next few weeks. I don’t know about you, but we can’t wait!
Libby Ince, Phase Leader Years 7-9
On Friday 7 September, all Year 7 to 9 learners will build on their current fitness unit by taking part in an Inter-house Cross Country Fun Run at Bedok Reservoir Park. This will be an opportunity for all learners to 'have a go'. The focus of the day will be on participation in a fun and encouraging environment while also identifying those learners that would like to continue Cross Country training.
Please feel free to come along to the park between 1.00 - 2.15pm to support your child/ward and join in the house spirit. The learners start/finish line will be close to carpark A (off Bedok Reservoir Rd). Spectators are welcome to attend but it is recommended that you take a taxi or public transport to the event as parking is limited.
We are also always looking for parent volunteers to help with race marshalling. if you are interested and available please contact me on massey.g@nexus.edu.sg.

Have you ever wanted to gain your PADI Open Water Scuba Diver qualification? Or are you already a qualified scuba diver and want to learn new skills? If you can answer yes to either question then why not join us on a liveaboard diving trip? We are hoping to run a trip one weekend in November. Leaving from Singapore, we’ll sail to one of a number of dive sites in Malaysia or Indonesia. You’ll stay aboard a boat like the one below in comfortable cabins. As well as lots of dives, there will be time to relax and unwind with your friends too. On the Saturday night there will be a seafood BBQ and fun games. The trip will be open to Y10 to Y13 learners. If you’d like to register your interest or if you’d like to learn more about the trip, email Lee Wilson (Wilson.l@nexus.edu.sg).
Please refer to the Sports/CCA pages for details on the proposed ski trip to Switzerland and the CCA programme.
