‘Future Aspirations’ have been at the forefront of the Middle Years this week, with learners in Years 7 & 8 beginning to consider the skills they will need in their future careers. Thinking about the future can be tricky, especially when we are preparing for future careers that have not yet been invented! From Options Evening, to subject specific seminars, there have been plenty of information, activities and support for our Year 9 learners as they whittle down their IGCSE Option Choices. Learners have been carefully considering their future pathways and are making informed and knowledgeable decisions, as they select courses and subjects that are personalised to match their interests, abilities and talents.
From the Learning Resource Hub:
Recently, the learners have begun their 'Reading Circles' programme with support from the Secondary Teacher Librarian, Ms. L. Reading Circles is a common classroom instructional strategy that groups learners together and connects all aspects of literacy. The learners choose from a selected group of age-appropriate books and after reading one or more chapters in the book over the week, they collaboratively discuss and critique what they have read. Reading Circles can be used to reinforce listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in a small supportive setting. The programme encourages learners to deepen their understanding of the text, as they are asked to discuss plot, language, personal experiences, and predictions. Each learner is given a specific role per week such as discussion director, summariser, vocabulary collector, and so on. So far it has been fun listening to their literary discussions. This activity is also done with Year 10 IGCSE English First Language. Ask your child what they are reading!

Y11 learners have concluded their Trial Exams on Monday the 25th of January. This is a valuable experience for our Y11 learners as they build towards their final IGCSE exams starting on the 3rd of May 2021 which concludes on 18th June 2021. The final timetable will be shared later this term. Teachers will be sharing results and feedback with learners in the coming weeks. The upcoming Y11 option evening on the 9th of February is an important opportunity to discuss subject choices for Year 12 and the Parents Evening on 24th February is an opportunity to have discussions regarding the progress of your child/ward.
Last week all Year 12 learners immersed themselves in the IB CAS program for the day, collaborating in groups for Creativity, Activity and Service experiences. It started bright and early volunteering at Willing Hearts. Everyone challenged themselves in different roles from pot washing to chopping vegetables and packing the hundreds of meals for delivery to those in need across Singapore. After a well deserved breakfast at the nearby hawker, the groups headed on a creativity trail around the local area exploring some sites many of the learners had never seen before. With connection to the Theory of Knowledge curriculum, each group member was involved in taking interesting and creative photographs which were shared on our return to school.
The active afternoon of sports was a chance to learn new skills, challenge each other and in the words of some of the learners enjoy laughing together. Although some of the competitive spirit was certainly evident in some of our energetic basketball players, everyone was involved which was great to see. The obstacle course ended the day with some enthusiastic team spirit and discovering skills some did not know they had!
Well done to all Year 12 learners for your open minded and caring approach throughout the day. That’s what made it such a success.
