This week at Nexus we stopped to enjoy some activities that make us happy! On Monday afternoon learners were treated to a trip to the theatre with Years 1,2 and 3 getting a sneak peek of āMary Poppinsā. Year 5 and 6 were feeling equally artistic spending time with practitioners from Singapore Repertory Theatre who led them through drama workshops based on the book āThe Boy With The Boxā. Our Secondary School learners got to make some choices about their activities by signing up for things that interested them. The activities ranged from time in our fitness suite, to arts and crafts, mindfulness activities and trying out something completely new like Mandala Sand Art!
We were treated to a live interview in Reflection Time from our IBDP CAS learners who are leading on projects that are helping our community and beyond. JoyBox and Computer Refurbishing Club (CRC) are just two of the initiatives coming out of the CAS work at the school helping the wellbeing of migrant workers in Singapore. We also heard from our school counsellors, who shared some wellbeing tips with our learners.
Over the past few weeks learners and staff have been submitting ideas and tips as part of our āTips From The Toiletā campaign and these can now be seen in our toilet stalls when nature calls!
The week ended with a fabulous dress up where the learners and staff dressed up in what made them happy!
It was truly a wonderful week full of joy, gratitude and reflection. Miss Hughes (Deputy Head of Secondary School)
Practitioners from SRT working with our Year 5&6 learners on drama exercises that explored ideas around emotions and wellbeing
Our live interview to find out how these CAS learners have been helping with wellbeing beyond the school by supporting migrant workers
The incredible wellbeing tips from our community can now be seen all over the school campus
It was great to see so many of our learners and staff dressing up in costumes, clothes and accessories that bring them joy!
It has been wonderful to have our first big production, Mary Poppins. I hope many of you got to see the production as restrictions eased to allow us to have our first large gathering. It was so good to be able to welcome you back on to campus.
The production really brought the community together; staff from all parts of the school have been supporting the learners by building props, designing backgrounds and sets, making costumes and just giving time to support the learners to practice.
It is this sense of community and dedication to children's learning and wellbeing that epitomises our Nexus spirit. Thank you to everyone who is involved.
Last week, Year 13 were lucky enough to have an inspirational talk from business professional Catherine Feldhausen (retired from Microsoft). Catherine focussed on helping the learners create a positive and professional online profile to highlight their skills and service experiences, and help elevate their stories. A special thanks to Catherine for making the time to help the learners begin building their networks. We hope to set the learners up with quality professional profiles as they go on to University and beyond.
It's my last day at Nexus today and I'd like to say goodbye. I have been at Nexus since 2012 and have seen the school grow and go from strength to strength. I am particularly proud of the IB learners I have worked with over the last five years as IB Diploma Coordinator and the teachers who have supported them. Our IB learners have achieved year on year increases in their average IB score for the last three years with a 100% pass rate last year. Such a wonderful achievement.
It has been such a pleasure to work with IB learners and parents throughout their two year IB Diploma Programme journey and before. I have been working with some of you since you started Year 7 at Nexus. It's been a privilege to watch you grow in confidence, learning and in height(!) to become the outstanding young people you are now.
I will miss you very much. I look forward to hearing about all your successes here and as you move on to life after Nexus.
Ms Melanie IBDP Coordinator
A note from our Year 13 learners reflecting on their time in the IB Diploma Programme
Two years ago on this wondrous day, we were all equally immersed within our dreams and hopes of IB. Prepared, eager, hungry for success. The greatness flourished, our struggle to overcome and most importantly the memories we made and shared along the way. For once a cold night had reminded us that the next is just over the horizon. The struggles we were bracing ourselves for were simply obstacles waiting to be overcome. It was through the invigorating IB that we were able to achieve, strive⦠and brace ourselves for the impending future where we can bloom into new buds of success.
