Dear Parents and Guardians
I hope you have had a good week. It has been wonderful to be celebrating wellbeing this week and to have our first big production, Mary Poppins. I hope many of you got to see the production as restrictions eased to allow us to have our first large gathering. It was so lovely to be able to welcome you on campus and to hear your glowing reviews.
It has been fantastic to see how the production has brought the community together; staff from all parts of the school have been supporting the learners by building props, designing backgrounds and sets, making costumes and just giving time to support the learners to practice. We have even had visiting mothers of staff giving up holiday time to get involved. It is this sense of community and staff dedication to children's learning and wellbeing that makes me proud to work at Nexus. During rehearsals it is inevitable that the learners would make mistakes. Being able to make mistakes in a safe supportive environment is so important for learners to grow as people and learners. Check out our counsellors wellness tips for more on how you can support your child to be comfortable making mistakes and how reframing mistakes as opportunities can really help them.
As we wrap up term three I know many learners will be preparing for trial exams and final exams. This can be a stressful time and teenagers do not always know how to articulate these stresses. You can help your child by listening. Never underestimate the power of listening to your child, if something tricky comes up resist the urge to interrupt and fix it, give them the chance to talk and reflect and find their own solutions. By actively listening you are showing your child that you value them, while building trust and confidence. Our most successful learners are often those who know emotional security and feel valued in the home and school environment. Term 3 reports for Years 8-13 should be available to view from tonight. Please do discuss these with your child and help them to set some goals and targets and please take the time over the holidays to connect with your child/children.
Have a wonderful break, we look forward to seeing you all again on Monday, 4 April.
Best wishes
Dr Heather
Head of Secondary
As part of our wellbeing week we have been thinking about the rights of children. We know that these often need protecting even more in times of conflict and are asking everyone in our community to consider how they can support children in places where their rights might need protecting. Click on the picture to find out more and to learn with your child what was agreed in this convention and discuss how you could help. We know that helping others can be good for our wellbeing. Are there opportunities you and your child could explore during the break?
