Book Week
'A Journey Through Time'
The Secondary Learning Resources Hub was very busy with daily book week activities. The theme this year was "A Journey Through Time." We had two authors visit the school, Josephine Chia, who has written over 10 books on Singapore, both fiction and nonfiction. She spoke to Year 8 who just finished an integrated unit in Humanities and English on 'Stories of Singapore.' She spoke about the 'kampong days' after WWII and her writing Journey, Gabby Tye, another local author gave a lunch- time talk to Years 7-9 about her journey as an author, what inspires her, and her 5 part Dystopian Series: Run, Hide, Seek. As a young 21 year-old author, the learners could relate to her unique story.
During tutor time there were 'guess the book cover' challenges and mindful bookmarks passed out. There was a book Kahoot and book Trivia game put on by the Book Club during lunch as well as some origami. During English library lessons for years 7-10 the learners were engaged in a variety of activities all centred around authors or books. Year 7s were given book covers and asked to do some research and post them up on our 'book timeline.' Year 8s watched a short documentary on the history of young adult literature and engaged with reflecting on their favourite books or books they want to read by creating an 'ideal bookshelf.' Year 9s listened to a short talk by Author John Green and then played a game of Kahoot. Year 10s watched a TED talk by Turkish Author Elif Shafak who talked about the power of storytelling and then asked to connect to her story by writing about themselves.
Of course, Friday was dress up as 'Your Favourite Book Character' day and it was great to see many learners and even staff dressed up and involved.
NEXUS BEATS VII: 7 Is A Lucky Number
Music Concert: Thursday 8th April 2021
Nexus Beats is non-competitive and open to all musicians from Year 6 to 13. It also welcomes performers from other performing arts, such as Dancers, MC's, Poets, Rappers, DJ's and Magicians, as well as poster designers and a backstage crew.
This year we hosted 13 bands from Years 5 to 11. This is our biggest event so far. The concert was streamed on our Facebook page, and has so far been viewed 2.1K times.
Thank you for supporting our first live concert this year. I hope that you enjoyed it: with so much talent on stage tonight I am proud of the learners' achievement. This was a team effort and I would like to thank so many people for making this happen, including our technicians Tee and Zul, the Marketing department, the Senior Leadership team and my wonderful colleagues in the Music department: Clare Lambert, Miss Tash and Mr Chris.
