What a fantastic year Nexus and the Nexus Parent Group have enjoyed. The NPG has moved from strength to strength, highlighted by the fabulous atmosphere at the year-end parents’ night out last Thursday at Rochester Park, which was over-subscribed! The night out capped off a year of development and growth for the NPG, numerous coffee morning workshops, a number of small and large social activities and the formation of a cohesive and stable general committee to organise events and provide feedback to the School.
I would like to thank all members of the NPG who provided their time and love to building the school community this year, particularly executive committee members VP Tanu Shukla, Treasurer Helle Willumsen (who has provided a number of years of effort to the NPG) and Secretary Suzie Bacon; committee members Reinet Doig (who was also a VP for much of the academic year and handles the lion’s share of our comms, design and social media), Ali Baker, Gina Maier (Primary School Liaison), Lisa Beasley (Swim Liaison), Manisha Rayarel (Senior School Liaison), Monica de Waal, Penelope Foo, Simon Falcao, and former committee members Mana Yamamoto and Judy Anzai.
I am pleased to say that a good number of our Class Reps have agreed to commit their time next year. Of course, we are still looking for a number of Class Reps to replace those that bid us farewell. If you would like to be a Class Rep next academic year, please drop us an email and express your interest.
Finally, I’d like to thank the School’s Senior Leadership Team for its support of the NPG’s endeavours and activities, and of course for the provision of the NPG Lounge. This year we started regular meetings with available members of the SLT to co-ordinate activities and to provide a direct channel to ensure that your feedback is heard.
The NPG wishes all families safe and happy summer holidays (or winter if you are a Southern Hemisphere native). We also wish those families leaving us all the very best and please do keep in touch. In an uncertain global environment and one in which we are witnessing increased divisiveness, we are so fortunate to be a part of the Nexus community. Our children enjoy greater privilege than perhaps 90% of youngsters globally. More importantly, their expatriate and Nexus experiences afford them the most incredible opportunities now and in the future. We are diverse, inclusive, supportive and embracing of difference. While some want to exploit difference and create division, the celebration of differences and diversity makes Nexus the most tremendous incubus of the modern, open-minded and welcoming global learner.
Feedback for $10 contribution towards the NPG
We are currently exploring the idea of asking families to provide a small annual contribution of $10 towards the NPG to support our events and activities. We’ve had a great year, events have been well-attended and workshops have been many and varied. We have a fantastic draft calendar in the making for the new year, a welcome package for new parents and various other operations and activities scheduled.
This fundraising method is in line with a number of other international schools but is a significantly smaller sum than those surveyed. Of course, as has always been the case, the NPG remains accountable, and our books and finances remain completely transparent.
Please complete this anonymous survey below to let us know your thoughts.
We are keen to grow and develop the NPG as a fundamental pillar of our wonderful school and its community.
Warmest wishes,
Simon Hyett, President, 2018-2019
Helle Willumsen, Treasurer 2018-2019

About the Nexus Parent Group:
One of our School’s unique pillars is what many parents and staff describe as a special community spirit.
The NPG serves two purposes within our community. Firstly, to provide parents with a platform through which to start conversations and provide feedback to the School – to be “a voice of the School community”. Secondly, to offer a range of great social, cultural and special interest events. We welcome all volunteers to join our vibrant and diverse committee, with the main aim of maintaining an inclusive NPG where all ideas are considered valuable.
Our Facebook NPG group is a place for all our parents (and other members that are close friends of Nexus) to interact and create a closer community. Please feel free to post questions, reminders or any related comments but do refrain from lodging sales posts, we do have the second-hand buy-and-sell group for these posts or advertising your business. Please email us at any time npg@nexus.edu.sg https://www.facebook.com/groups/nexusparentgroup/
